Welp I could sort of see this coming, unfortunately.
In the square of Lexington stands a CSA soldiers statue, and they've announced that they'll be 'moving' it, but not saying where right yet.
It was there today about 4p, I dont know how much longer.
It's been up for 115 years, it's just part of the square.

Im not going to say Im pro-CSA statue, but Im anti them tearing down parts of the areas' history.
Im sick of seeing stuff topple because people get upset all of the sudden.

Here's to hoping there will be a museum of sorts that'll house these various things. But I aint holding my breath.

Museum will not happen unless it’s on private land and ownership. Take them damn pig statues off the street. Wonder what the northern folks tell people when they see a city of pigs.

When erected, its place was in the center of the street intersection, at first a 'diamond' shape curbing, then circular

it toppled a few times from automobile contact.... moved to its present location on the Southeast square "about" 1958/1959.... Another section of 'the square' has monuments honoring the dead of WWI and WWII....
IIRC the monument has an inscription 'our confederate dead'.....

Most old picture post cards showing the OLD Courthouse include the statue in its glory.... it IS history.....

Four Blocks South "The Homestead" was utilized by the Union Army as a office, probably saving that structure post-war. I had a very good friend from Indiana that his grandfather was discharged from the Union Army from there.

Since about the beginning of April there have been daily 'protests' most days. Heck, even Thursday night/yesterday while it was raining hard there were four at the statue and about the same at the courthouse - the BLM/anti-statue folks are at the courthouse.

It's gotten heated several times
In fact, Tuesday I got a cup of coffee in the square and then went and sat down in a grassy area in the shade and read, browsed here a few, and just enjoyed the nice weather.
While doing so I witnessed a Ranger (truck, not Army) drive away from me on Center St, slow down, start yelling things at the BLM folks. BLM guy shouted profanities back.
Then, within 10 minutes, Ranger guy is coming back on Center, stops at light beside of the BLM folks - more words exchanged, then the BLM guy chucked his flag at the truck. ALMOST landed in the bed...oh how hilarious it'd have been if it landed in the back and the guy kept driving.

No cops around.

Now, in the past week, Lexington PD has started shutting down Main and Center one block in each direction, no traffic allowed through there.
Ridiculous.
All of this.
All of this crap is going to interrupt everyone else's lives

They removed the statue last night. County supported it. City council sued the Daughter's of the Confederacy. Supposed to be put up again sometime in the future.

I cant wait to start canceling their symbols. Its coming and I wanna help!!! I'm offended, its hurtful to me!!

I can't believe Lexington has turned out to be a liberal haven. The City Council should be ashamed to be in office and turn in their resignation ,they have chosen to distort history for political reasons.

UNDER THE COVER OF DARKNESS....
that is when and says volumes....

ghp 8 posted some of the court documents today...
The 'daughters' essentially gave up the fight to get taken out of the lawsuit.

Where is it going? according to the posted documents, cannot be in city limits...
So that is BLM lies about wanting it in the Davidson Co Historical Museum....

NOW REALLY... What changed in these people's lives today???

WHAT IS NEXT ???????

Hopefully I’ll be able to drive through downtown without having to detour now. Every cop in Lexington just sitting around blocking traffic over something so trivial.

I'd love to have one of the removed statutes in my very rural front yard.

Protestors? F'em.

Vandals? A man can dream can't he ?

Well they better smash that courthouse that the BLM folks have been standing in front of for months - that's where the slaves were sold

When they removed the one in Pittsboro “under the cover of darkness” my comment in the local online chatlist was, “How are you communists going to feel when patriots start removing you in the middle of the night, under the cover of darkness?”

Im sitting here, in teh square of Lexington NC. Im enjoying a nice cup of iced coffee, enjoying the amazing weather.
Im enjoying not seeing a ton of protestors, either side. Not hearing the chants.
NOt see a bunch of flags waving. Just enjoying the square again.

No BLM to be seen. A few folks are standing around the place the statue used to be, two flags flying - one Trump, one AMERICA.

The statue is gone. The base of it is gone.

The protesting is gone.

No more, hopefully, blocking of roads around the square.
No more suffering for the local businesses as the roads were blocked.

Im not saying Im pro statue being gone.It was there for a hundred years, no one really cared till Floyd. Funny.
Im also not pro statue, I'd have been just as 'pleased' if there was a matching monument as the other war memorials in the square.
But I am happy things are getting back to normal.

Are they? Are they really? 🤔

Might be a lull in the action, but I hope you're right and we all get to something like normal again.

you just 'missed' IT...
drove north on main after blood donation at YMCA.... to check out election voting site on N Main.
there was a group around the fenced area, with their flags, etc.

Did not see an outside line @ 12:40 so I stopped in for vote...
out at 1pm, then down main to get vehicle washed.
from there Conrad and Hinkle, drove around old courthouse to head to east center...

round the corner from West center was the Trump Parade... Flags on cars, trucks, etc....one after another...
heading south on Main.

Finally got a spot to cross and on my way down fairview to #8,
dang if not caught up in the parade again, not sure where they were headed, but they had about a mile of vehicles,
followed all the way to downtown southmont whan i turned off.........

I do hope all participants in that parade have voted!!

edit...
now 'really' what HAS changed since it came down? (besides the 'protest') what has this done to the "oppressed" lives?
just waiting for the big Clark Kumbuya gathering in the center of town...
