I have researched and read previous posts, but wondering if there is one, or a couple, that you guys in the know would recommend?

I use Express VPN. It is not a free one, but you don't have to watch the crappy ads. It works fine for me, connects like it is supposed to and I notice no speed reduction. I use it DuckDuck Go browser for added privacy. There are others but I would not recommend the free ones.

Also curious about this. I see ads for NordVPN & Express VPN quite a bit but don’t know much about which is best.

As an example, IPVanish is $6.49/mo if you pay for a year, $8.99/mo if you pay for 3 months, and $10/mo if you pay for 1 month.

But, they offer all kinds of deals/codes if you look around. I’m currently on one that is ~$89 every two years, so roughly $3.70 a month. I think I’m allowed 10 connections at the same time. You can also just connect your router at home (I haven’t tried that yet) and then everything on your home network is covered and only counts as 1 device...or at least that’s how I understand it.

No nasty grams from ISP for perceived violations based on someone complaining about a download. When out and about (especially hospital waiting rooms!, ability to use tablet somewhat protected.
 
Express VPN, $100 a year, never a problem, great customer support. I have it both on Windows and my iPhone.
 
Opera browser has a built in vpn for free if you want. You can turn it on and off at will

Yeah, it has a VPN, in the same way that a Tata Nano is a Jaguar, because the same company owns them. It's a VPN that's painfully slow(he mentioned downloading, so this is important) that logs data(he mentioned downloading, so this is important). It's a VPN that defeats the purpose of having a VPN. Not a dig at you, I've just seen people recommending it, and I can only assume that's cause people don't really understand what a VPN is/does when they recommend it.

Be prepared to be blocked from time to time when you're trying to use VPN on public wifi. Most of the better firewalls subscribe to services that keep up with the destination ips for the different vpn providers and can ip block them. Providers add new ips, firewalls block them, it's a never ending cat and mouse game. As newer gen firewalls get more into the application layer for inspection it's going to be harder and harder to get away with things like vpn, even the more sophisticated .tor vpns.

How much you get blocked comes down to how tight the place you're using public wifi wants to lock down, there's a point where controlling firewall becomes a full time job for public wifi and a lot of places just airgap public network from their private and run it through a dedicated firewall with minimal restrictions, no easily classified porn, hate, c&c traffic, known virus/worm activity and let it run on autopilot.
 
i'm still using torguard.
I have it on my desktops, laptops, mobile devices, and when i bought a couple years at once, they sent me a tiny router preconfigd to run vpn

Others have mentioned it. It will be painfully slow. Depending on your download styles you can look into seed boxes then you’re able to download from them encrypted.

No and the problem with review sites is they get paid for affiliates links and their recommendations.

NORDVPN isn’t stateside, doesn’t log anything. And doesn’t cooperate with 3 letter folks.
 
I don't know much about VPN's but I use Nord. I don't feel like I notice any difference in speed.

General surfing and such you shouldn’t. As long as you have fast internet to begin with. Most people can’t tell a difference when surfing the web or YouTube at 100mb CS 1gig. The speed comes into play when downloading or multiple devices.
 
Thanks for all the replies. Decided that Surfshark was worth a try. I will say that I had a question about Thunderbird and Gmail. Went to their site and started a customer service chat. Response was immediate and he solved the problem in seconds. A good start. Only possible issue I see is their kill switch blocks the internet even if the vpn is not connected, but with a 30 day money back trial, I'll see if it is an issue. For my intents using a vpn, I do not feel it will be.

Don't forget to change the dns settings on router.
