first i have heard of this:

"There is a folklore superstition regarding the giving of a knife as a gift. If the knife is given to a friend, money must be exchanged as well. It is considered very bad luck to give someone a knife without exchanging money or the friendship will be cut by the knife. Because of this superstition, it is common that the gift of a knife will be given along with a penny, nickel or dime in the box with the knife so that the recipient can give back the coin, thereby saving the friendship from being severed by the giving of the sharp blade. The exact background of this superstition is unclear yet; even today most people will include a coin with the gift of a knife and request the coin be given back. The apparent view is that it is far better to be safe than sorry."

Never heard this one.

My family never gives an empty wallet or purse, not sure how common that is.

I once gave my Father in law a pocket knife, he immediately reached into his pocket and handed me a quarter.
Then he explained to me.

I have been given knives by my sister, my father, both sons, and a good Swedish customer, many years ago. All is well with all of them, well, except dad. He’s been dead for 25 years, but not because I stabbed him with the knife he gave me.

No coins were involved in the transactions.

And I forgot a very nice Gerber @thrillhill gave me. It’s on my desk.

You think a coin would keep me from cutting my fingers ever now and then when making a knife? ;(

It is standard practice around my family with knives. Firearms, however, are a different story.

Never let a gift of a knife cut a friendship. Heard it a long time

Dang; I just gave a buddy on mine's son a Spyderco as a graduation present. I wish somebody would have told me this about 5 hours ago.

I always heard it as if someone gives you a knife you will cut yourself with it if you don’t pay them for it. Unfortunately for me it has come true with every knife I have received as a gift as well.

I once gave my father a knife for a gift. He got visibly upset and walked away. My mother had to explain it to me. She said it represented the severing of a relationship. Well, no one ever told me. :(

I've heard it before, along with a few dozen other superstitions. I never pay them a second thought.
