Is what I was thinking when trying out my new 638-3.
ph 102 .12.jpg

I got about 7 yards from a 8" shoot-n-see and not even close. Didn't even see any hits on the cardboard holding the target. Try again, same result.
Get 3 yards away. Still miss like hell. Not even close.
wth? I get it, it's got a 1.75" barrel, but totally miss at 3 yards?
I get to lookin and the front sight is all bent to hell. This gun is bnib.
It's hard to tell from the pic, camera would't focus on front and rear sight together. But trust me it's bent hard to starboard.

How it got that way I don't know. Guessing some klutz dropped it at some point.
Question is, how do I straighten it back?

Grind off the starboard (if I got the right) side.

Yeah might have to.
It was a private transaction, not a gun store etc, so it's mine.
Wonder what S&W will tell me?

If I had to bet, I'd bet they'd tell you
"give us your address so we can send you a pre-paid shipping label"
but I try not to gamble.

That should not cause a huge miss at 3yds. Maybe 6"? But you're saying its off paper. This gun has another issue you havent found yet

It looks as if the barrel is not screwed on all the way.
Yep, it looks like the barrel is not indexed properly to the frame.

This ^

It's a manufacturing issue. Barrel was not properly torqued or threads were not properly indexed when cut. Smith and Wesson will take care of you.

My advice was erroneous. I meant dremel the sight, not grind.

Wait wait wait, what about one of them table top two wheel jobs? I bet you could get that barrel in there to the grinder wheel.

Ya'll think it's a index thing?
When I intentionally shot low-right about 7", I'd dance around the x-ring everytime.
The gun performed great everywhere else. Trigger in single and double, both good..handles good..2 finger grip is not bad..kick is below what I expected(158gn LRN)..ejector works good for being so short..like the exposed/not exposed hammer..
Would it still 'work good' even if the barrel was wacked out of spec?
I like the gun. I think it will be a good wheelie for pocket carry. It takes the same pocket space as an LC9.
But yes I agree I think it needs a visit to Uncle Smith.

Have you tried holding it gangsta style?

This^^^^^^Happens more than you would think at S&W.
Ruger went through a spell several years ago with the SP101 barrels not being indexed correctly. You could look straight down at the top of the gun and see that the barrel didn't line up with the frame. S&W will make it right.

That should not matter. It is new enough to have the lifetime warranty and who says you have to tell them you were not the original buyer. They have no way of knowing. All you have to do is call customer service and they will send you a shipping label. They aren't going to ask a bunch of questions. The only hard part is waiting for its return

I had to send a 629 back to have the barrel indexed again after using it a lot since the mid 1980's. It was fine when I got it new but evidently moved a bit after thousands of rounds of 44 Mag. It seems to be doing fine now.

Send it to Billy, he'll fix it up nice and pretty.
Yeah, when heā€™s done with it, there wonā€™t be a front sight to annoy you. :D

I could put those gangsta glock sights on the side of it. Total operator.
Why waste the money? Just grab the barrel with Vice Grips and twist it another 80 degrees. ;)

But seriously folks.

I worried myself crazy with a used gun that had a cracked frame. I didnā€™t inspect it sufficiently before the purchase. When I contacted S&W, they never asked whether I was the original owner and replaced the used and out-of-production gun with a new one of greater value.

Based on my too ample experience with them, theyā€™ll make it good for ya.

Before you send it back to S&W, have you considered selling it?

I need a gun like that to justify how I shoot.

Dude, at 3 yards the sights ain't worth a damned to ya anyway...... 9 feet, really?? I have tables longer than that...
Yeah I know. Wouldn't hit the 8" target at 3 yards.
I had the same reaction; Seriously? I missed it?
But yes I was trying to sight it.

I went and checked mine and the sights look good. Pick may make it easier to tell that the barrel is not straight up and down on yours.

When I brought my S & W 640 Pro years ago there was a problem with the barrels being canted. I had ordered one and when it came in the barrel was canted. Lucky for me that had 4 come in at the same time and I checked them until I found one that was not canted. I was under the impression that that was resolved now. Since I've sold all my revolvers I hadn't even thought about this until this thread.

You beat me to what I was going to say but I didn't want to make fun of him. But at 9 feet he should be able to hit the target without the sights. Otherwise he might consider better glasses or something with 30 rounds so he can just spray and pray. :)
