I was walking around Home Depot today looking for something to impulse buy. I stumbled across a Ridgid tool storage box and thought it could make a Pelican equivalent gun case for 1/3 of the price, since I have extra foam laying around the house.

Here is what I came up with. I thought some of you may like the idea.

The two dividers can be removed to make it more like your typical gun case.

Looks good. Only issue is you don't have enough guns in there. :D

It's what I use for the HK
There was a company that did custom cut foam for those but they dont do it for the k-model HKs anymore. Sucks.
But, yeah, those cases rule

I have one for a range pistol which is this same Ridgid box. I also have the three stack with wheels for all my ammo. I don’t use ammo cans. These have a seal tight lid. I have the big, mediums, and your smaller one. I have a total of 12 boxes and 6 of the open crates which stack and lock. I have not cut the foam.

And it conveys the additional benefit that your average thief, seeing that it looks like something associated with work, will give it a wide berth

The only real downside to this kind of setup is in the event you come across a situation where the thief is willing to snatch ANYTHING to potentially sell.... I mean, how many tools of the type the case is intended to hold end up in a pawn shop?

It IS such a cool way to reuse cases, aswell as hide in plain sight. It just sucks that people will try and take anything not nailed down.

Hardly.

Any criminal who sees that case will think it's full of fast money from the nearby pawn shop.

I assume that any decent tool available in a pawn shop was stolen.

If you want "nobody's-gonna-steal-this" low-profile. A pink diaper bag is the way to go.
I once kept my jewelry in a tampon box.

Id love to find pick and pluck for these

@pirate, what are you cutting that Kaizen foam with?
You can use a disposable razor knife which is very thin. The supplier sells them but you can get them at Harbor Freight for $1.99 when I was last there. What’s nice about Kaizen is the layering which makes depth adjustment simple. I saw a video of a pistol AR-15 in the Ridgid one above. I may make one for a truck gun but locked up since the handgun is inside the passenger area.

I used a 4" Mora knife. This is my first try cutting the Kaizen foam and I could have done better but it turned out Ok, I ordered some more foam for another case project and the specialty knife they sell to cut the foam, this should make cleaner cuts. To make the holes for the batteries I heated with a lighter a 8" section of an old aluminum arrow shaft and it burns/melts the holes on the foam perfectly for round penetrations. I also used this method to make the finger index hole in front of the pistol grip so its easier to get the handgun out of the foam.

Does anyone one know on the rigid Is the dims listed for the outside or inside of the case? Have a project for one and trying to see if it will fit but wasn’t sure how they measured it.

I just measured the interior width at 20.5". Outside was 21.5"

Very nice!

What did it set you back?

Oh, and there are other cases they make, including one with wheels and a pull up handle.
It might make for a good gun tote if you have smooth concrete/pavement etc
I dont think I'd get much from it at my range with all the gravel, but it could be useful at other places

If anyone wants some free foam I can meet up with you (Winston-Salem). Like I said, I’m going to buy the kaizen foam to redo this one.

Yours if you want it. Save you a few dollars on gifts, @Inglis
