I live out in the country, and recently have noticed largish (bumblebee size) flying bugs. The seem to swarm in groups of 5-20.
They seem to disappear into the ground?
The look sort of like big houseflies.

no idea what they are. Pretty sure they are not cicadas, or wasps.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Sorry, the only thing that comes to mind (without pictures or description) is cicadas at this time of year. If you say they're not, I believe you, but I'm at a loss without more information.

Well
I think they might be cicadas, but my wife insists they are not. She has never been wrong. Ever. Not once. At least that’s what I am willing to admit in writing....

the insects seem curious more than anything, they are not loud and don’t seem to bit or sting...

Take a picture. Pictures help. you could have

1-nest of bumblebees, which are pollinators like honey bees and harmless

2- June bugs

3-cicada killer wasps

4- murder hornets

Planted by some evil force, first to spy on you and then to send you off into the abyss.

the 7 or 14 year locust have come out this year I know up toward pilot mt. they have been swarming something awful. If its them you'll hear them as they are a constant noise

government microdrones made to look like insects
recharging "nests" are planted near persons of interest and the "nest" has its own chute digging hardware built in to account for collapse due to rain/vibration/etc.

I was trying to make a joke, but we're probably only a couple years away from this being true, if it's not true already

If they are going into a big hole ~3/4"OD in the ground (usually under the edge of a barn or deck) they are most likely cicada killer wasps. They're huge the first time you see them.

That's what I was about to suggest. You'll usually see them low to the ground, and flying in groups. I've seen a lot of them around already this year hunting cicadias.

Catch them and put in a small box in the freezer.

Wait twenty minutes to cool.

Dip in egg and beer mix with self rising flour.

Fry at 350 for one minute in hot oil.

Feed to your Yankees friends a true NC hush puppies.

Watch Yankees go home.
