Didn't they used to do monthly tests?
I know I've heard one before with no message, but not today. I've been hiding in the house so far.

The tests are usually announced as such. The tones are also used for amber/silver alerts. I'm not sure that I have heard them without an announcement as to what the alert was.

I have become quite immune to them. Our cable provider tends to insert them randomly on varying channels. I hear at least one per day. I fear one day that there will be an actual emergency and I will ignore it.

What's this button do?

I remember visiting a friend who was a DJ at a well known local radio station in the '70's. He was showing us around and at one point pointed to the EBS system, which was a self-contained rack. He pointed to an dial that indicated the severity of the alert. He said he was told that if the dial every went to 9 to just leave the building. 9 indicated eminent nuclear attack. This was back when we still had those Fallout Shelter signs.

Gee thanks, George. You just had to remind me of those days.

I won't bore folks with the details but, growing up in FL during the Cuban Missile Crisis was not a pleasant experience.

All the money spent for the equipment the US Govt mandated and the EAS has NEVER been activated, even during 9/11, never.

Reminds me of what I use for a background image whenever I have to do one of those Zoom meetings:

You know that screen is racist. ;)

Wow. I remember that screen from when TV stations signed off every night. Right after the Star Spangled Banner.

I remember those days too. TV stations used to sign off at midnight and sign back on at 6am. Except one local station on Friday nights that played a local comedy show called Big Chuck and Little John. I am not sure when TV stopped signing off. In the 1980's movie Poltergeist, in one of the scenes towards the beginning where they introduced the TV People the did the sign off routine...

Those are National Weather Service Alerts.
The EAS was designed to allow the POTUS to address the county during an emergency.

Supposedly the POTUS one is the only alert level you can't turn off in your phone. I have wondered if you would have the ability to turn it off if you re-flashed the phone with an OS like LineageOS or the older CyanogenMod.

I recall as a young pup the CBS 'eye' logo and the voice of Walter Cronkite...'We interrupt this program'... and you knew it was something really bad.

Big Chuck and Little John- classic!

I think there may still be a station in Georgia (Jawja) that plays "Georgia on my mind" by Ray Charles, right before signing off.

I heard the EBS fail around 89 when I lived in California. Right after the big Loma Preta quake. The tones came on, then you heard a couple of guys in the studio talking to each other asking if it was working.
