Disc golf

Wow, forgot all about the country course. Blast from the past. Hell, we have probably met. I was trying to remember some names from back then. The only one that comes to mind are the Markov brothers. Oh, and Joe Who. Who could forget him.

I used to play with Dave Mansfield and Lance Manson(sp?).

One time at Clemson there was a frat boy trying to buy what I assume was a frisbee but all I heard was the 80 year old sporting goods clerk say "DISK... GOLF...?". You probably had to be there but my wife and I still joke about it to this day.

I have a bad arm right now, but don’t mind walking, having a cold beer and seeing if I could actually throw. Maybe sometime in the next week or two. Headed to the mountains tomorrow to break quarantine around a fire pit with friends and bourbon.

Harris will hurt you if you don’t have good control of your shots. I have at least 100 discs. Several specifically for risky water shots that if lost no harm done. I can take you to Harris and warn you on the ugly holes. I’ve probably played there a few hundred times.

Then Harris will hurt me, lol.

Have fun and heal that arm. When you are feeling up for it, I'll buy the beer.

@NKD , CFF’s largest dork here. I have been playing disc golf for about 10 years. Neighbors got me into it. Harris Lake has a course with several lake and pond holes that add some fun risk. Nothing like watching your favorite $15 disc sail into the lake.

I have played at somewhere over 200 courses nationally. Many hard core disc golfers will argue that NC and particularly Charlotte is the mecca of disc golf. Tons of free courses in NC. Lots of private courses too. I have a friend with a 100 acre tree farm in Linville that is an insanely awesome course. Ashe County Park up by our mountain place is great. Asheville has a great course. Heck, the course on UNC campus is pretty darn good. Cedarock Park in Burlington has 2 courses. One is long and mostly open and one is heavily wooded. They used to host the US Championships every year at Winthrop. Not sure if they still do as I don’t play as much as I used to. Fun to watch what really good players can do. I helped build the course at Rockridge Park in Pittsboro. That’s pretty good if you are looking for someplace close. And the City Tap is a decent 19th hole on the way home.

I tried to play Linville but we either couldn't find it or something happened, too long ago. Cedarock was one of our favorites. That long open field shot down to the left, something like 380 feet, I hit the pin. I've played Winthrop numerous times as well. I've played Pittsboro but I believe only once. Jacksonville course has some long ones. I live really close to Harris, and I don't like that course for some reason. In my youth, I could throw the lake hole but I can't anymore.

Most recently I have played the Apex course off Kelly, that is a nice little course that I've enjoyed.

This has been a good discussion and brought back a lot of memories. Makes me want to play again.

I could be convinced to throw a round at either Apex Nature park or Middle Creek. I haven't thrown in a while and have a rotator cuff issue so I don't know how it will effect my game but I'd give it a shot. If your interested throwing with an old dude.

The Linville course is very private and only available for play if you know Rich. It used to be a little more open, but people abused the privilege. My liver hurts every time I get up there. The Kelly Park course is about 5 minutes from my house. Horrible if it rains. Lots of low lying marsh covered with mulch. Horrible design and planning, but at least the high school kids have somewhere to go to hit the pipe.

I used to play. I also played ultimate for N.C. State. When I play disc golf, I like to play with an ultimate disc. Even almost got a hole in one at Kaplan.

Yea That's where I learned to play. I always liked to ace run #1. I built a stick to pull discs out of the drainage on the other side of the road from #2. I picked up many discs there. If they had numbers I called them to return. To start out I picked up some used disc from Playitagain at Crossroads to see if I liked it then bought new later. To start out I recommend get a midrange and putter.

The course off Spring Forrest in north Raleigh was pretty fun as well.

The best players can throw a putter or a midrange better than most of us can throw a driver.

Oh yeah, if it's been rainy I won't even consider going there. On that front, I agree, it's horrible. I don't know, I still enjoy throwing there. I've not witnessed any teens hanging out there, maybe they have recently discovered it. I haven't been there in a while.

Ever since it opened women from the surrounding neighborhoods have complained about kids smoking pot in there. And using foul language. Then again those dumb ass women use the fairways as walking trails and put themselves in danger so they are as much of a problem as the kids. I prefer more remote courses, but have played there when I don’t have a lot of time. The holes around the creek are fun.

Heck yeah man. I’m old too man! I’ve enjoyed that Middle Creek place. Although I don’t have anything to compare it to! Just seems like a a good mix of holes. I’ll pm you.

Ha. I have an elbow problem so I feel your pain. I still can’t use my right arm to start my blower so have avoided throwing since November. I might be able to backhand a lid. I’ll have to try it out soon and see how it goes.

I saw your pm before this post. So ignore that question but Middle Creek may be a good place to start unless you want to try something different.

Getting old is hell aint it? I feel every major injury I've ever had most mornings. :) Give it a shot, let us know. Maybe we can do an old man group at the course ;) joking of course.

After 21 holes today my shoulder is not happy... and I have officially forgotten everything I knew about how to play disc golf... Lol...

Great you went out and played. It's all in the wrist :) 21 holes was a pretty big bite if you haven't thrown in awhile. Typically if I haven't played in awhile my boob feels like it's going to fall off the next day.

Where did you go?

I always carry but usually keep it in my bag of discs. I've seen my share of hippies, hotties and deer. What's that smell?

So I just picked up disc golf about 4 months ago after a buddy at work took my. I've come a long way in a short time. I live right next to Horizon in Winston so that's where I've been playing most. I've been buying a bunch of discs and learning their flights and have been really enjoying it. So far my best round was 11 under on 18 holes. Chasing my first ace as well. I've come close a handful of times already. Last time out I threw a 170' forehand on hole 1 at Horizon and hit the chains dead center and it popped back out... I was pretty upset haha.

I used to play a lot 20 years ago. I also played a lot of Ultimate at the time. I used to play Pratt Park in Fredericksburg, VA. It is one of the oldest courses in the country. It is home to the VA States Frisbee Championships. This year would have been the 44th year for the tournament if it had not been cancelled do to COVID. There are several really nice courses in that area.

One of my friends and former business partner from Fredericksburg is Steve Dodge. He owns Maple Hill Disc Golf in Lesiter, MA. It is one of the best courses in the world. When he moved there his dream was to create "The Majors" for Disc Golf. He wanted his tournament to be "The Masters" of Disc Golf. The Vibram Open now known as the Maple Hill Open is pretty much that.

He was the one who started the Vibram Disc Golf Line. He convinced them back in the day to make them using the same plastics that they were using to make rubber soles for shoes and boots. He then went on to found the Disc Golf Pro Tour which he recently sold. Steve is a crazy love him or leave him kind of dude. He was a much better Disc Golfer than I was. Lots of guys as they get older move from Ultimate to Disc Golf because there is less running. LOL

I have played a few locally but I am pretty rusty. Rutherfordton is actually in the process of converting the old 9 hole city golf course into a park which will include a 18 hole Disc Golf course. If it moves forward I will probably be part of the group that helps to design the course with help from the PDGA.

PS its Disc with "C" not a "K". :)

Interesting stuff, thanks for posting.

I did notice that Brodie Smith guy (ultimate dude) has moved to disc golf.

Def do it. I’m pretty close in South Raleigh.

I’ve been playing at least once a week. But sometimes 1-3. Have done several 36 hole days.

Pretty addicted to it. Super fun game and a nice walk.

So while everything was shut down we noticed that Stokesdale park had a 9 hole course laid out. Wanting to find something to do outside as a family we ran to Walmart and bought (3) three disc sets for $15 each.

My wife and son, who aren’t as good at throwing a frisbee, use just the putter. We played Stokesdale a few times and then we started looking for other courses. The course at triad park is a lot of fun, really well maintained and mostly shady.

After playing the red tees for awhile I switched to playing the blues because apparently I can launch a driver like a machine. Lol.

I really didn’t think anything of it and assumed all the guys walking around with backpacks filled with 20 different discs were better but I’ve had several people stop me and say Jesus dude. That’s one helluva launch.

My follow ups aren’t as good so I’m usually a few over par.

Anyway we enjoy it and it’s decent exercise. Good family fun and challenging enough to make it interesting.

I have played Maple Hill a handful of times. It is an awesome course. And they have a great shop there as well.

The other day I drove off tee right into a tree like 30’ out.
Took out my midrange disc and hammered the birdie from what had to be 240 or more.
There was some luck involved, but damn it felt great!

@NKD I still want to throw a few rounds with you, things just got crazy for me. I'm in the Healthcare industry and things started opening back up and insanity ensued.

I would still be dancing if I pulled that off.

For me 0-about 30 feet out is pretty much a gimme. Anything over that and I’m probably not gonna make it.

Luckily I can usually get it to within 50 feet or so off the drive on most par 3’s. So I par most holes. Get bogies on the tight tree lined holes and occasionally birdie the par 4’s.

For those down east, there is a really nice course right on the banks of the Neuse River in Newbern at Glenburnie park. Rolling gullys in large pines with nice grass. Found it when I was launching my jon boat and saw guys throwing. I've played it a few times when I'm down that way. It gets a nice breeze off the water usually.

Johnson st was pretty crazy this afternoon, even with the heat. I've been playing pretty consistently the last few months and improved a good bit. Had a pretty funny moment as me and a buddy bypassed a big group on the back nine. They were obviously very new and let us play through. Jaws dropped as my buddy bombed one 350+ and I threw around 275 in great position.

I pretty much always throw multiple discs just for extra practice. I've just threw some forehands while walking from the tee box to my original drive from 100'+ and have lasered some haha.

What discs are yall throwing? I have 10 so far and just ordered another today. Right now for drivers I'm throwing a destroyer, firebird, and valkarie. Mids are a truth and buzzz. I started putting with an aviar but have recently switched to a p2 and love it. I also have a luna as a throwing putter that I'm still figuring out. Plastic types are a whole other discussion haha.
