I think he had a background in opera.
Sounds like it. I like a lot of the gothic and symphonic metal and many of those singers have a background in opera. His vocal style has a lot of similarities. For example, Nightwish anyone?

Puddles has an incredible voice. I think he had a background in opera. He wowed them on America's got talent.

Yes he does have a very good voice.

I liked the video, but, HA, But,
Two things,

His vocal was about buried and a bit too much verb.

When I ran sound it was said a bad voice can be made to sound good by adding reverb, lots.
And if verb does not work , cut the channel, LoL.

Puddles can sound much better if this video were redone properly.

Check out his America's Got Talent performance. I think it was his best.

Yes,
I was not putting Puddles down.

On a scale of one to ten I give him a 15!
While the Gilligan's mix was very creative, in a good way,,
I don't believe that Gilligan's mix did Justice to his talent.
Basic rules:
1) Keep vocals out Front
2) don't overdose with effects

I bet Puddles would do really well if he took some Sinatra tunes and mixed it up.

That's what I liked about this AGT performance. He extended his range a but and worked his voice.
A friend if mine was a sound engineer and it was funny how I learned to listen differently from him. He noticed every nuance of the studio or venue, the mik'ing, the mikes even the cabling. We were "audiophiles". We enjoyed hearing the "soundstage" between the music . :D

My favorite music videos are the studio type sessions.

Almost everyone knows when music / sound doesn't sound right ~ correct and the vast majority do not know why.

As you pointed out, once someone learns how to listen and what their listening to / for, things ~ prospective changes.

This man is a genius,

In my opinion,

A Master

Who woulda thunk this rag tag group would be Puddles fans. :D

That country (Johnny Cash style?) version of Pinball Wizard was epic.

Surely he's done something a'la Judas Priest. Sure, Halford has that high register, but this fellow's voice color reminds me of Halfolds, so transposed down some ...
