The daughter of my former partner (EMS) and her fiance want me to officiate their wedding in October.

I'd heard for quite a while that you can "get ordained" online which would suffice for the state of NC.

I didz my googling and it seems to be pretty common to get ordained online through the "Universal Life Church".

https://getordained.org/

And it looks like I have to "register my ordination" with my county in order to be able to perform this service.

I was wondering if anyone here has done this and whether or not there is anything I should be wary/leery of?

It sounds like a mostly bureaucratic exercise.

I kind of dread it in a way. I'm gonna have to buy some dress overalls and I'm not really a public speaking kind of guy. On the other hand, I have known this girl since she was 9 years old, and she has been bringing her fiance over to hang out once a month for the past 2 or 3 years. (My former partner and I got/get along so well he brings his entire family out to my place once a month for a day even though it's been SEVERAL years since we worked together.) I truly do get the warm and fuzzy feels that they think enough of me that they want me to do this. Kinda makes me feel a little old too.

So what should I look out for? Any helpful hints would be appreciated.

Also, asking for a friend, this won't interfere with one's ability to start a cult further down the road will it? You know, bucket list stuff, gotta keep all the options open. ;)

I don't know about getting ordained but please post some pictures of your new, starched, creased overalls. It takes a while to get new bibs all soft and limbered up.

Funny, I also have becoming a cult leader on my bucket list.

I did this when I moved to nc years and years ago. Same organization. then iirc it was $11 or something like that to register. not and issue then

IIRC, Mrs. Jeppo and I were married by an ordained friend of hers. I’ve always felt our marriage was the equivalent of buying a firearm using The Gun Show Loophole.

Just spoke to my cousin, he did it. He said he was pretty sure it was the same place you mentioned. Also advised, don't pay for anything. It was all free.

The wife and I were watching Honeymoon in Vegas. We both looked at each other when we heard the ministers voice at the end of the movie, then we saw him and sure enough it was the guy that did ours. She asked me, "Ummm, do you think we are really married?" I googled him to be sure he was not just an actor.

I think the Jedi thing is through the universal life ministry or something... I had a buddy do it about 10years ago to marry a friend of ours. I just googled it and posted the first couple of links I found...

I will say carhartt black bibs do turn out rather speffy for a wedding with a nice shirt and can be used later on. Half jokenly brought it up to wife and she liked the idea so I ran with it for our wedding and it was much better than the monkey suit I would have been in.

Cant help you with the other part.

I for one believe the church of Bill would thrive!:D
Weekly services start out with ballistic therapy sessions, followed by music and food around the fire bowl.

I’m in!

Actually it was 2 sisters......really...

Is that legal? Not the two females thing but the siblings thing.

On second thought, given that this crowd is known to be sticklers for absolute strict obedience to the law, it must have been.

Or maybe it's a case of what happens at Battery Oaks stays at Battery Oaks.

My wife got ordained online, in preparation for our youngest son and his fiance getting married. She said it was free, but she didn't follow up with making it official with the state since the kids have postponed the wedding.
Imma tell her she missed out on the Jedi thing...

There isn't anything to follow up on with the state. There is no registration of ordination and no one checks for anything. All anyone will say is the official must be ordained but there is no standard of ordination, no registry and no one will ever check up on it. Basically there are only two things that gets people in trouble.
1. not returning the license with in 10 days after the ceremony to the register of deeds which is a $200.00 fine to the couple.
2. Having the marriage ceremony before you get your marriage license. I find this one hard to believe but it does happen.

My son got ordained so that he could officiate at my daughter's wedding. The only hitch (heh heh) was that the county line runs right through the spot where they were standing, so he was in one county, and the happy couple was in another.* We decided that the county in which the vows were exchanged was where the marriage took place, so that's what was put on the license.

*I knew this only because I had previously looked at the country club where they were married, for its insurance company. A look at Google Maps showed that the county line ran right between my son and my daughter. Not a real problem in any case, since a marriage license is good anywhere in the state, but I think it makes an interesting story. Better than the streaker at the reception. (Just kidding.)

A lot of folks are ok with the NC Governor being the Highest Authority at their wedding. They follow his rules and pay his fees. My son is one of 'em...

Set the Way Back machine Sherman. I did this. Ordained by some "church" that advertised in Rolling Stone circa 1970. I "married" two friends one night in the RLT Rose Garden. We partied there until dawn when they went off for the "official" wedding. What a flashback. Whoa. Colors....

Since I think the answer to the OP has been given, I'll just speak up so that people dont have the misconception that this is how pastors are ordained. I, for instance, had an ordination council of several other pastors who interviewed me on doctrinal and personal grounds. They then recommended ordination move forward and the congregation formally voted to ordain me. The process differs from church to church (and denomination to denomination) but it's not just putting your name on a sign-up.

Gaggle of Pastors: Hello, God? This dude seems aight. Whatcha think?

God: Dunno. Ask those people waiting to be entertained.

Gaggle of Pastors: Pretty much what we were going to do, but figured we would ask.

Bride an' Groom: Hello, Governor? We wanna get married. Whatcha think?

Governor: Pay the fee and file the paperwork, and I will bless the union.

Bride an' Groom: Yes, sir! Don't we need a preacher?

Governor: Oh, yeah, get a preacher off any street corner.

Bride an' Groom: Pretty much what we were gonna do, figured we'd ask.

Bride: Honey, pay the Governor an' let's get on with it!

The easiest way to do it is have them go to the courthouse for a civil ceremony to make it legal. Then, have the REAL ceremony with you officiating. Saves all kinds of hassle.

Since I was mentioned:

I was ordained through our church. There was no licensing with the state required.

3. The witnesses use disappearing ink to sign all of the paperwork.

Yes sir, happened here in Cumberland a few years back lol. Folks at the court house were PISSED.

Well, got the paperwork out of the way. Had to try on the outfit today for the lucky couple. Went with a pair of my Sunday best that I already had . They both liked it. Especially the part where I practiced my response to objections.

Gonna need to shave the ole noggin and trim the beard before next weekend. Other than that, it's "a go".

Appreciate all the help from everyone.
