I have raised chicks for years and never had a blacksnake get in the brooder until today and I have now had 2 of them in it in one day they ate 15 of 23 chicks sorry they had to DIE

I’ve found that blacks snakes that have been relocated away from the coop somehow find their way back. Maybe I didn’t take them far enough away but from now on if they find it the first time it’s the last time.

yes the Blackhawk 45LC with snake shot works well on them

Had one get in the rabbit hutch yesterday and took a kit. Have to rebuild the hutched with tighter wire spacing. Hate it, because they also help with the mice.

I killed the first blacksnake that got in wifes brooder and absolutely hated doing it. ever have had another get a chick yet and that's after her brooding over 100 + chicks I figured out a way to keep them out till the chicks are big enough to fend for themselves from snakes. I'll take a picture of the setup tomorrow it is fool proof from snakes coons whatever

Thanks I want to see the set up. in 15 years here this is the 1st time I had a problem and 2 in one day figure the odds

I don’t like killing any “good” snake but when they start on your animals they lose their “goodness”. We’ve used snake traps that look like minnow traps but with a little wider entrance and would put a couple eggs as bait to catch the ones that had got the taste for chicken or guinea fowl. It’s a set it and check it every evening morning thing ... the bastards raided at night 90% of the time. We relocated quite a few and King or Black snakes especially were real easy to find friends who wanted one for the wood pile.

Wildlife netting from the ground up about 24" will keep snakes out. It acts like a gill net, trapping and killing the snake. Keeps mice out, too.
