Seems like they’re getting worse every year. Weeds sprouting up in the cracks and expansion joints between the driveway slabs. Over the past 10 years I just spray the with round up. The past few years however it seems like it’s taking more and more roundup to kill them.
The hippies next-door who always scream at me when they see me with a jug of Roundup in my hands are telling me to use one of those propane torches instead of herbicides.

what say y’all? Does burning them out actually work better and round up?

Be sure to sling an AK whilst spraying Roundup and open carry a Bowie knife. Top off the ensemble with a "Che" tshirt and beret. Should make the hippies happy.

Also, maybe try:
1. Roundup, wait 10 days for it to get to the roots and do its enzymatic nutrient blocking thing
2. Pull 'em up with as much root as you can
3. Burn their habitat! Create the Driveway Valley of Fiery Death!!
4. Squirt some triclopyr or other woody-stem herbicide down into the cracks
5. Seal up the cracks with the appropriate filler - hydraulic cement/asphalt patch/masonry patching caulk, etc.

The Round Up you get now is not what was available a couple years ago.
I double the dose in my sprayer for my gravel drive, that seems to work the way it use to.

I need one of those torches to use as follow up after the Round Up treatment, where do you get a good one?

To keep the Hippies happy use a 50/50 mix of white vinegar/water with 2 table spoons of salt.

I’ve found this works better if you use straight vinegar. For tough weeds I buy 45% acidity vinegar and add a cup of that to the mix. I also use a lot more salt.

I have thought this was the case, because it just doesn’t seem like it’s doing the job it used to.

I used Pool Salt, Vinegar, and H20 with a bit of Dawn. It killed em, but they came right back in about a week!

Y'all need to just buy glyphosate generic at a farm store / TSC instead of all that paying royalties to Monsanto. Or use something less dangerous to humans, like Burn Out

Looks like it’s cheaper in the long run because you buy it and mix it yourself. That’s good.

Yup. This times 10. It's a crap-load cheaper too. Mix it as hot as you want. I'll admit it's a little disappointing to use. I expect the little bastards to burst into flames when I spray them, but nooooo. It takes a few days before they start to yellow and a few more days before they start looking like they're on the way out.

Fact of the day: Glyphosate works by triggering the plants into a fatal and unsustainable rate of growth.

yes. The problem with G-sate is that it mimics estrogen. So when you're out there spraying that stuff all willy nilly, it's basically like inhaling your wife's birth control. It also kills good grasses.

That's why I don't use it anymore, use 2,4-D and Triclopyr sparingly (or the Tri-Way ones with 2,4-D, MCPP, and Dicamba) and like to use good sustainable weed control like mowing and reseeding good grass.

and not the kind of good grass @premise looks like he grows professionally either

Or you could use one of the bare ground type sprays that sterilizes the area for over a year. Nothing will grow.

If you know someone with a pesticide license, maybe you could get them to bring some paraquat over and spray the areas. It is restricted to purchase.

Paraquat and 2,4-D were both used in Agent Orange and are banned in some countries.

Get used to it, they will always come back.

The weeds do seem to come back faster and I’ve found that you typically have to spray them at least twice.
I still use weed killers in select areas but I use the vinegar in areas where I’m growing food.

Brother, the life I led the first 28 years of it, a little bit of birth-control is the least of my worries! :D

Weeds and unwanted grass are a two step process. Roundup is a defoliater. Meaning you kill the host plant. But it is not a pre-emergent. Meaning what seeds drop from the dying plants are going to germinate and return pretty quickly. So. Spray and kill, then in a couple weeks (or less), when you notice green fuzz coming back, spray it again before it seeds out. Pay attention and do that a couple times and your spraying times will last longer

I have one word for this discussion -Killz All. I get mine at Oxford Ace Hardware -don't know where else it's available. Takes 3-4 weeks but it's REALLY dead!

Hippies complaining? Go old school & mix 50% glyphosphate with diesel fuel, now spray for long lasting effects.
Roundup and the right ratio of petroleum products make a flammable gel

A) That mix is SUBSTANTIALLY more expensive than mixing your own 41% Glyphosate
B) It also doesn't work (in my experience).

$2 in vinegar + $1 salt/soap = $3 gallon.

Even if you don't go to a farm store and buy the stuff @Brian K mentioned, you still only pay about 80 cents per gallon.

Also, salting your driveway long term can possibly lead to rust on your vehicles.
I was speaking strictly about round up and the such. I imagine you have some Jurassic type weeds over there that they may not work on. Here it has killed everything I have applied to within a few days.
Worried about a couple of sprays of salt on a driveway rusting your car is kind of a joke.
Poster can do what he likes, I was just trying to add a choice that works for me.

Whatever you decide to use, put it in a container with ROUND UP marked on it as big as you can get it for your hippie neighbors to fret over.
Definitely this LOL^
