I'm wanting a shotgun for hunting. Birds, deer and clays sometimes. I was thinking a auto but I really like my pumps. I have only ever had 2 shotguns. A mossberg 590a1 and a Remington 870. What should I have a look at in the pump world? I prefer something that can take different chokes.

Should I just buy another 870? Should I go with a 3inch or 3 1/2?

Thanks

I would go semi auto if you want to shoot clays. A pump can be a lot of work on doubles. Can you do it? Yes. You probably won’t enjoy it though.

If you are a lefty, there is a nice Benelli Montefeltro Super 90 in the classifieds. I love my Montefeltro!

Clays and pump are not a good fit. Consider an over/under or go semi. It’s just my opinion but there is little reason to buy a 3.5” shotgun unless you hunt tundra swans and high geese.

If you want birds, deer and clays, your deer barrel ought to be rifled. Depending on ammo, a smoothbore can be a 50 yard gun but a rifled barrel gets you out beyond 100, possibly further.

When I picked up a Hastings rifled barrel for the 870 with an integral scope rail it made a world of difference, as in hundreds of pounds of venison. That 18" improved cylinder with rifle sights was so limiting.

well guys I ended up with a semi auto. Found a Charlie's daly for $389. It should be here this week. Hopefully it works good for me lol
