My little sister bought a LCR in .327 Federal Magnum.
Here's the problem-she's a tiny little girl, doesn't shoot regularly or practice. She's just moved from Ohio to TN and wanted something 'just in case' which I'm not at all opposed to, but a magnum?

The revolver part is a good choice for her, but I would've found her a 10-6. I'm kinda pissed at whoever swayed her towards a magnum, let alone a tiny snappy one. If she gets a TN cwp I'd be surprised and I imagine the only thing this gun will do is stay in the nightstand.

So please recommend something down-powered in one of the 32 calibers that would be manageable for her. I have no experience in either 327 or 32 so I'd appreciate some help. I'm gonna visit her in early April and want to take some 32 stuff for her to try. I'm tellin ya, she won't be able to handle magnum rounds.

I love mine. However, I consider any sub-compact gun to be an experts gun. They are definitely not a first gun.

She might try using the lighter .32 S&W long cartridges for practice. The are not as snappy as the magnum loads. She might also want to acquire a full size .22 lr pistol to practice shooting fundamentals.

That right there seems like very good advice to me. My first handgun purchases were M&P full size 9 and 22...for exactly that reason.

The 6-shot RUGER® LCR® 327 is chambered for the .327 Federal Magnum cartridge, and can also chamber the .32 H & R Magnum, and .32 S & W Long cartridges.

Either way, try not to give off negativity when you visit. I don't know the situation, but at least she took that step on her own. See how she does with it.

Do you reload?

If I had a sister I’d do the same thing I did for my wife, give her a good old 38 revolver, model 10’s are plentifully. Reminds me that I need to buy a couple more for when my daughters graduate from college.

If you’re going to take her shooting at least take something that you’re pretty sure she’ll tolerate to shoot first. If her first shot is a SD round from that LCR she’ll have a flinch so bad you’ll have to put her on epilepsy medication to solve it.

You might also wanna visit the gun store and thank them for being so ethical.
Yeah I know right?
I try to step back and take a breath before I lay into someone. Maybe they did tell her the 32's would be more manageable.
But I still can't get past the LCR part.

Absolutely. It's what we gotta work with. I'll take one of my 10-6's along with some of the softer polycase ammo and see if she shines better with that. If so I'll see if we can't get to a lgs and work out a trade for a model 10 or even a 357 with some 38. She'd do a lot better with a K frame trigger and weight.

If her first shot is a SD round from that LCR she’ll have a flinch so bad you’ll have to put her on epilepsy medication to solve it.
That's kinda what I'm expecting, and then I'm worried that she'd be afraid to use it.

I'm sure it already occurred to you but I'd whisper something like...

"Hey sis, I'm proud you took this step. But, you know you've got a gun freak for a brother...call me first and let me help you next time". ;)

Most important device for a new shooter is hearing protection and plenty of it. The sound, not the recoil, is the biggest deterrent to a new shooter accepting a magnum.

I think whomever sold it to her did very, very well. He shoulda included an explanation about all the ammo it can shoot, and why she might try them to find out what she likes.

32 acp ...shoot this instead of buying a separate .22
32 S&W ...shoot this if you think 32 acp is too expensive
32 S&W Long ...shoot this for target practice, or carry it for self defense. (If you disagree, do ya wanna volunteer to stand in front of it?)
32 H&R Magnum ...shoot this for self defense, if you can't handle the recoil and noise of 327
327 Federal Magnum ...shoot this to deafen or destroy yer foe.

I carry this one in the 32 caliber of my choice, but not 327. It's frame is not adequate, even though the cylinder is plenty long for reaming 1/10" to 327.

I've bought several Ruger Single Six 32s, and reamed 'em all to 327. I love these little single actions!
Yes, I do carry them. (Please don't hate me!)

I don't have a picture of my Smith Model 31 chambered in 32 S&W Long, but it looks just like this 1954 .22 Kit Gun Model of 1953. I thought about reaming it to 32 H&R Magnum, but decided not to do that. Turns out you can load 32 S&W Long to the same level as 32 H&R Magnum, so that's what I will do! Yes, I carry the Model 31 sometimes as well.

327 has a fair amount less kick than 357. Still has a snap but not what you are thinking. On top of that you have a good 4 or 5 total rounds you can shoot out of it, ranging from powderpuff all the way to scary hot loading.

32 shorts will feel like a 22lr but have better ballistics. The longs are almost the same.

The lcr has one of the best factory double action only triggers on the market. Relegating it to a simple point and click interface where you don't have to yank the trigger just to work it.

Also you are mad about the caliber when you admittedly know nothing about the round or any of its variants, and instantly claim she can't handle the gun and was taken advantage of because it has a scary word like magnum.

Honestly the guy did good you have tons of options for power levels, the gun is light enough to carry, but large enough in the grip to hold on to. The brand is reputable and solid and you will get 6 instead of 5 rounds for most guns it's size

Shoot .32 acp out of it until she gets really comfortable with handgun shooting. then you can step up to .32 HR mag or .327 mag.

the .32 acp round will be an absolute joy for her to shoot out of that thing. just enough recoil to know you are shooting it, but still stout enough to use for protection if needed with good quality ammo.

My own research into a carry gun for my wife has led me to the LCR in. 327 Mag for the same reasons listed by the. 327 proponents above. The wide range of ammo that can be used means there will be something she can fire comfortably, and the LCR trigger is really good. She has dry-fired my LCR (. 38) and likes the feel of the gun and its trigger.

I think the biggest challenge with the LCR is the short sight radius, and for that reason, we will also aquire a 4.2" SP101 for training/nightstand duty. I need to make it fun for her so she will practice, and the LCR is going to be challenging to shoot well even with low-recoil loads.

Also, I think it would be a nice feature for both the LCR and SP101 in this caliber to be cut for moon clips for use of the 32acp.

32acp is semi rimmed. Should work fine as long as you stay away from the Remington brand. They tend to have smaller rims. Lots of customers have issues with any of their normal ammo not fitting in the moon clips for 45acp or 9mm.

Her wonderful new revolver will shoot ALL 32s except 32-20. That includes 32 auto! She is well armed.

All 32-20 ammunition can be traded to MuShu (that's me) in exchange for high-fives and butt-slaps. For the 32 H&R Magnum guns, the "safe" way to look at the calibers is whether or not the cartridge is necked down at any point. I also don't think that you can shoot 32 Colt or 32 Short Colt in these weapons. As well as ANY 32 rimfire round. I used to have a ton of 32ACP Hollow Point ammunition but I can't seem to find it. I likely sold it and just don't remember.

If I may add, the Ruger LCR has one of the best double action pulls of all the small revolvers I have tried and the .327 Magnum was not an unreasonable choice, with all the .32 cartridges that can be fired from this little revolver it's an excellent choice, in my opinion! She & you should give it a fair chance.

My suggestion is take her to a range when you can go visit and let her rent couple of guns and try and see what she likes and is comfortable with .

shoot 32 S&W shorts/longs, or H&R mag in it for practice, carry .327s for SD/HD
Do This^^^^^ and all will be right! The 32 H&R Mags are powder puffs and the other 32s are even less. Don't rule out shooting .32 Autos in it. Yes...they'll do fine and are Soft!

Honestly, I think you're discounting women. Short of having some type of hand strength issue there's no reason a woman can't shoot any caliber a man can as long as the weapon fits their hand. My girlfriend is barely 5'4 and shoots whatever she wants. She owns in pistols .22, 380, 9mm, 40 (in a subcompact), and 357. She shoots my 45s, 44s, 10mm, 38 super, 45lc, 410 whatever I happen to bring with me when we go shooting with no issues. It's all in being comfortable and learning the basics.

My best advice for you if she is a completely new shooter is to take a decent 22 revolver, let her learn trigger control, sight picture, manual of arms on a revolver for loading/emptying, run her through a couple boxes of .22 and then let her start shooting the larger gun. It's way easier to re-enforce good habits learned with a .22 and prep her for the additional recoil, noise and back blast of a larger gun than it is to try and break flinching, etc that can be ingrained right quick with something their scared of. That's good advice for teaching a new shooter no matter what sex they are or even age.

Yall realize this is a 2 year old thread, right?

Nope. 32 acp out of a revolver also yields poor accuracy , like miss a Ipsc target at 10 yards. Better than a sharp stick. 12F89CF5-55FF-40D5-B999-240B0B2869BA.png[

Thanks for all the advice guys.
I put a pachmayr grip on it and got her some 32 shorts and longs. The grip really made a difference for her and the gun is now do-able for her in a way that she can deal with, but she still doesn't like it. And believe me, I've never said any disparaging thing about it.(only to you guys) I just get her feedback.

Since then, I've had her over and she's been able to try all kinds of my handguns. I've offered her any and all calibers and styles to try all the way up to 41 mag. When she asks about recoil or kick I'm honest in my reply without being dramatic. I don't hafta do any of that, my little sister you-know, and she loves her big brother. (awww)

I admit I was kind of surprised at the one she liked most. The Walther PPQ/9mm. Took right to it and did well. Second choice is the 4" M65-3 with 38's in it.
She's just never shown any real interest in the semi auto concept, but she likes that Walther.
I had to explain to her that not all semi automatics shoot like that Walther does lol.

So now big brother is teaching how to slide-rack, clear jams, mag reloads, and all that semi auto fun.

327 Federal Magnum ...shoot this to deafen or destroy yer foe.
Can't shoot any of it - can't find ammo!

If she want's to trade it out for a shield, I'm her guy.
