Just thought to have a bit of fun.

So I have been thinking about a .357 magnum single action (e.g. like a Ruger Blackhawk) just to complete my faux-cowboy triad of lever-action rifle and break-action shotgun. Finding such is challenging as is finding .357 magnum ammo online. I stumbled across some PMC soft points, though, so ... out comes the CC.

So ... I purchased some ammo for a calibre of firearm I do not (yet) have.

Crazy? Or ... clever (since, well, now I need to get the revolver, right)?

As Paul Harrell would say: "You be the judge." You get three votes so you can choose all three replies.

Do it...you won’t be disappointed.

Don’t ever sell it...you’ll regret it.

I voted “crazy” because buying commercial 357 ammo is a huge waste of money.

I concede that reloading is less expensive. I'm not sure I would concede that not doing so is a "waste of money" given the space and time investment required and the mechanical predilection of the individual.

"Crazy" though, might still apply! ;)

I say cleaver just because now you do not have to wait to shoot your new toy when you find it since it sounds like your mind was already made up for one.

Now see, there you go! That was my way of thinking.

My only problem is that there is one other mind in play!;);)

And, the little voice on my shoulder said, "you can probably sell the ammo easily if the pistol never materializes!"

Like my wife's 50th anniversary?

I've bought mags, ammo, holsters, etc before the actual FA purchase in the past. Just did it all for a G19 MOS. I couldn't find one but knew one would pop up eventually.

In that case buying a revolver that uses cartridges is a waste of money.

All in, you can shoot 100 rounds out of a black powder pistol faster and more cheaply than 100 reloads out of a single-action.

Including the time it took you to reload them.
I'd like to see that.
Not saying you're wrong, I just want to watch.

Reloading pays for itself quickly when you shoot $$$ chamberings. As an example, .41Mag around here, when/if you can find it, runs $1.75/rd for 175gr "meh" ammo. I load 240gr gobstoppers for < $.20/rd.

.357 won't have quite as impressive a cost difference, but still significant. Plus there's the satisfaction of rolling yer own & tailoring loads for their intended purposes.

Before we rule on your craziness... we need you to explain why the lever gun and the pistol are not the same caliber. ;)

Ummm, well, you see, lever gun #2 will be. That's why I need to start stocking up ...

::cough::

And that Henry Long Ranger in .243 was just too sweet.

Remember that other thread about "what you suck at?"

Ok, so setting me loose in a room full of powder and other mechanical objects ... a man's got to know his limitations.

I really don't know how I survived 3 months on the floor of an oil rig. Something about God protecting fools and ships named Enterprise I think.

Nah dude, approach it as a scientist. We're talking burn rates, pressure, velocity & the like. Minimal mechanicin'.

You can get into a decent set up for not outrageous money. I'm sure myself & many others here would be more than happy to help you get setup & walk you through the process. Trust me, I thought it was voodoo until @rantingredneck rode over & helped me get going.

Thank you: that is very kind.

The other, pragmatic, issue is that we rent the house in which we are living. No garage (carport), though two barns/buildings in various states of dilapidation. Point being, I can't picture where I would be able to place a reloading set up and supply station.

I have one of these you can borrow. For low volume loading, it’s pretty satisfying.

From Video ~ 6:40:

Squirrel: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
Rabbit: We're good, bro. That's 9mm not 22LR.

please stop making perfect sense. i don't need another expensive hobby to support my already expensive hobby.
my uncle lives 20 minutes away and has a reloading setup in his garage...
I plan to do some garand loads once in a while using his setup, but THAT'S IT.

Look at it this way- if you reload, you will not save any money, BUT you will get to shoot a helluva lot more for your shooting dollar. Jus' sayin'....

maybe so, but i have serious doubts that my wife would be okay with my computer/videogame and gunparts cave suddenly growing a reloading bench when she's on another one of her business trips

If your cave is messy enough, would she notice?
we got some visitors coming. my "cave" is also where we have a lot of seating and 2 pull out couches. I've been cleaning up, per her request.
in a related story, I pulled a few boxes of gun parts into "the study" today to sort thing while I'd be sitting still for a while - and I got yelled at for that too! There's just no pleasing some people.

Well, the obvious solution here is to be sure that, next time, your visitors are all CFF members: we'd be leaking "gun parts" all over the house!
