40th birthday is coming up, and the wife asks me what would I like.

Unfortunately, my first choice is unobtanium at the moment. A stainless cz-75.

Second choice was a stainless Colt 1911. She picked it up for me and gave it to me early. Pretty geeked about it! :D

Admittedly, I'm normally a 1911 hater for serious use. But for a BBQ gun of sorts, I'm a fan.

CZ or a Colt 1911, they are both nice choices.... just need to snag the CZ next time!

Give that bad boy a chance and perhaps you will find yourself looking for a good IWB holster and running cocked and locked.... :)

I adore the classic spur hammer/spur grip safety guns.... just plain classy.

But then again my favorite CZ's are the old style ones with the classic spur hammer and short beaver tail too!

Perhaps Im just a curmudgeon in regard to pistols.

Congrats!

I've found stainless 75's a half dozen times, and always passed. Couldn't ever bring myself to spend "my" money on one...even though I badly wanted one. Which is why I suggested that to my wife first.

I've owned a couple 1911's in the past. The last, a 9mm EMP that wouldn't run and left a bad taste in my mouth.

This one...I purposely requested a Colt 1911, government model in stainless. I'll be getting a nice custom leather holster made for it, and it'll get carried once in a while, but it certainly won't be a Glock replacement. ;)

Start shooting it enough and it might. Your glock will feel like a cheap hipoint once you start shooting 1911s. Its like driving a honda and then taking a spin in a Ferrari. There is a reason people are so obsessed with a 100 year old design and its not all nostalgia.

Glocks are good pistols if thats your thing though..... kind of like a snickers bar or a twinkie.

See, I was going to "like" this.
But, then I read: "40th birthday is coming up," and decided there could only be hate. ;)
But, then I had a sip of wine (and I couldn't really hate on a fellow Leo) and decided to chill so hit "like."

Besides, your better half did well! Congrats on the new acquisition (and on a good past one too!).

:D

I've tried a few times to be rid of Glocks. Switched to all CZ75's a couple times. Tried to switch to various other platforms as well. Always end up coming back to Glock. They just work for me. They're cheap, ugly, reliable... And so are their mags.

I've given up on switching platforms at this point. Glocks will always be my go to for serious use. But there's room for other "toys" in the collection.

I dont really think they are ugly. Utilitarian maybe but not ugly. The design changed the industry so its pretty much a classic.... just not my kind of classic. I can appreciate them for what they are. All the ones I have shot were accurate and reliable. They just have a different feel to them.

I actually think the tricked out ones are kind of nice looking. That John Wick longslide gun is a fine looking pistol.... Kind of spacey. I handled one... it was pretty nice for a glock.

Shooting a 1911 is kind of like shooting a 6" S&W 29. You start having flashes of Harry Callahan and feel like a man. There is probably not a person on the planet who has not thought about shooting smiley faces on the target Martin Rigs style when they are out hammering away with a Beretta 92fs. Whenever I shoot 1911s its as if the gun melts to the hand and shooting itself becomes more natural...even spiritual. Its kind of like an artist with a paint brush.... a surgeon with a scalpel etc. It really is just a wonderful design. When I shoot a Glock its more like useing a hammer or a power drill. It works and is effective.... just doesnt have that kind of feel thing going on.....cold...no life....like a corpse.

As much as a fan as I am of tokarevs, berettas, Hi powers, Sigs etc. etc. Nothing... and I mean nothing is like shooting a reliable 1911. I like the plain milspec guns... the arched backstrap...the standard grip safety etc... Just fits the hand like a neoprene glove.

9mm 1911s are finicky Little SOBs. The ones I shot struggled with even FMJ ball ammo. Things are probably a little better now though....better mags etc... I will probably end up with a 38 super eventually. I think its a better round for the design than even 45acp. 9mms are nice when ammo is cheap though. I pour thousands through my tokarevs. They eat cheap steel case like candy once they are smoothed out. 45acp is one of the reasons I kind of stayed away from 1911s for so long. Its a great round but I like little more speed.

You got a nice one. I expect you will be happy with it. I wouldnt do anything to it other than maybe change out the plastic parts colt likes to use. Even then I would shoot it a while first. Seems kind of weird throwing plastic components on 1911s. Kind of like when Beretta started doing it. Those plastic triggers had to go. It just didnt feel the same when shooting.

Congrats on 40 and the new 1911. She did well. The new Colt Classics with the NM barrels are good guns. She even got one with good rollmarks! Enjoy it!

Good wife! Now if it had been in 38 super you wouldn't have been worried about speed.

Kudos to your wife. She done real good!

And happy 40th!

Thanks everyone. My wife is indeed pretty awesome. :D

Put a couple mags through it a couple hours ago, then ordered a few Wilson Combat 8 round mags for it.

@tokarevfan - You're description of the 1911 is how I feel about CZ-75's and variants (P01, PCR, SP01, etc). My problem is it becomes emotional, and because of such, I'm scared to drop/scratch/ding up the gun. And thus not use the gun. With Glocks...I don't "abuse" them, but if one got dropped and dinged it up, I'm not going to care. It's a tool...it IS the hammer.

With that said, I have always enjoyed shooting functional 1911's...I just haven't owned many. This one will be one permanently in the collection.

Of course it will. You need to hand that down to the kids and keep it in the family.

Thats why I bought a Norinco for carry. Its already scratched up from the factory.

Hahahaha!

Yeah, this one will get passed down to my kid most likely.

Will it get shot regularly?? Please say yes......

It won't be a complete safe queen. It'll get some rounds put through it.

What will keep it from getting shot a LOT is I enjoy shooting my suppressed stuff far more than anything else.

I would happily volunteer to shoot it for you any time...so it won't get all sad in the safe, while the others are out having all the fun!!:)

Great birthday present and nice wife! Nice Colt. I love 1911s.

My wife got me this Colt 1911 for my 60th birthday:

There are lots of great guns. Love shooting my CZ race gun. But there is something special about shooting a 1911. If I was forced to only have one platform it would be a 1911. Congrats on 40 and the awesome wife. She seems like a keeper

I think it was on my 40th birthday when my wife pointed a gun at me and said get out! Maybe it was a Colt or maybe a SW. Can't remember, but I did get the gun back so it really did turn out to be a birthday present in a sort of way.

Ouch.

Those look really nice. I almost bought grips like this for the Norinco with the Stallone Cobra on them to freak my son out. I wasnt sure how slippery they would make they gun feel when shooting though.

Tokarevfan, your comparison of the 1911 and Glock are spot on. I think it is great to have a selection of handguns that fit your needs or application. Some people say "Why so many guns?" These are typically people who are not passionate about shooting or collecting. ....and that's OK, it is not for everyone. There are many firearms I own either because I think they are cool or the way they feel when shooting. But I agree, my Glock is always with me for protection which is when you don't care about aesthetics, you just want it to work (and with Ameriglo sights and an Overwatch trigger, a little better to shoot)

Put about 100 rounds through it so far. Almost hate to admit how much I like shooting it.

Grip safety is going to have to be swapped out for a beaver tail. It's trying it's hardest to chew up my hand.

Plastic MSH has got to go. Want a better safety. It'll likely get a bunch of Wilson Combat parts in it.

Have a buddy making a custom holster for it now. Should have it in a week or two.

Remember, often drop-in parts, aren't. The more you futz with it, the more you can cause problems.
