Ruger American or savage 110 in 308

I am seeing these under $400. Was going to go cheap and see if the bug hit me.

Fair enough... I just picked up a Tikka T3X Lite for $579 for hunting.

I just realized this is the long range/precision section. I don't have any experience with the lower end guns set up for distance. (Not that I have any with higher end either, lol)

You probably don't want my Lite for PRS...

Ruger American for precision and long range? I think not. I have one and it is a great lightweight bush gun for taking deer size game. I have a first generation and it claims a 10 twist but shoots 150 grain most accurately. Ive rung steel with it out to 600yds (really the limitation of the scope not the rifle). Would not choose either for long range work. Ive owned 3 Savage rifles and they were all a big disappointment.

My neighbor bought a Bergara B14 in 6.5 and with a variety of high-end store bought ammo the best he can do is 1 1/2 moa at a 100.
The old Savage 110's shot like gangbusters straight out of the box but they were ugly as sin. Ruger's are great buys for the money but I've never been fond of the brand. Don't ask me why? Maybe it's because for years there was little after market parts. I've sold most of them (M77's) over the years. There still may be a 10-22 laying around someplace.
It would be interesting to take a 110 and a Ruger American straight out of the box and see how they shoot side by side. My money would be on the Savage.

But they both beat the hell out of Remington's. :D

This is similar to my line of thinking. For entertainment purposes I was curious to see what I could do with an out of the box value gun and then maybe tinker with minimal mods. I was leaning towards the savage also but jimmyjames has me concerned being disappointed with three of them.

I will be lucky to find many places to shoot past 500 yards and that is why I am thinking 308 will be fine.

But now with the virus and riots and shortages going on longer than I hoped I guess I will save this for another year.

I have a Savage 10 right out of the box heavy barrel but pre accutrugger. Only work done was a trigger job(easy to do on them) and I put a brake on it. I can clover leaf the holes all day long with reloads at 100. Farthest I stretched her out was 720. Hitting a 20x20 plate. At the time the scope was a cheap one.
