Had this conversation with a neighbor the other day, and I'm not sure I had a great answer for him. What would be your off the shelf SHTF rifle? Few years ago I would think it would be a BCM orDaniel Defense topped with your choice of AimPoint or EoTech. But I'm not sure if that is still the case.

What do you think?

I’ve got a bcm pistol with a 1-6 razor. It’s my go to for just about everything. Also have another set up almost the same with an rmr to keep it lightweight for the wifey.

I’d like to have a knights but man they are pricy.

A SHTF rifle ... depends on what SHTF really entails survival, battle or a see-all-do-all type. Now following you are looking down the AR road ... I’ll go with features available a little more than name. I want a quality barrel with either melonite, chrome or such treatment for a little longer life and ease of cleaning. Decent trigger which for GP stuff ALG’s NiB offering is a great start and while not a light match trigger offers a rugged and solid trigger that is pretty slick and tough due to the NiB. I’d like a good coated BCG like at least a Toolcraft or better (I like BCM, DD, Spike’s for this) w/ maybe NiB coating. I consider IRON SIGHTS (and I want quality metallic not plastic ones like Troy Battle Sights) a must even if I have an Aimpoint or such optic. After that you’re basically down to the “parts is parts” thing except for fit and finish ... assembly of an AR is not rocket science but some care and knowledge does help. So what is my idea? For now I’d say an $800 Barnes Precision BPC (Basic Patrol Carbine) is probably my thought and add my Troy irons, a sling and a few mags which would be all in for under $1000 ... of course ammo in today’s panic market would a big add on also but you gotta feed it ...

Say what you want, I have a delton factory build pistol 8.5 barrel with 500 trouble free rounds though it....it’s my go to gun(for now) and for 499.00 I can care less if it’s beat, dropped, scratched...that what makes it my shtf gun. Do the job and go home!

Now if I had time to pick and choose I might tak me a AK47 or even a longer barrel ar15.....or even my JM Pro 12 gauge!!

My grab and go rifle would be the M4orgery that I snapped together. PSA/FN M4 upper with a PSA lower. I put a Geissele trigger in it, ACOG on top and Surefire on the side and it's good to go.

A retired colonel I know asked me the same question a month ago. I told him whichever one you can buy right now that fits your budget. I said, “What do you like?” He said “M4”.

We zeroed the irons on his new M&P Sport II today. He’s ordering a Vicker’s BFG two point sling, and probably a Holosun red dot.

Done.

Today, it’s my home built Aero with a 11.5” barrel and a 1-4

it’s had about 5 thousand rounds out of it and I’m proficient with it. Zero issues too. It digests ammo and is easy to run quickly out to 400 yards. I can hit longer but I slow down a good bit to hit 6-700.

I’d be uncomfortable grabbing anything off the shelf that I didn’t any experience with and relying on it 100%.

Something in 30-30 Winchester. Damn near every other house in the south will have a box of ammo for it. :p

I don't have one. I've got specific rifles for specific purposes. I don't have an all around rifle that does everything.
I kind of think an AK would fit the bill. I've got a real mental block with bullets smaller than .30
