Decided to fly out to First Flight today with the wife. Almost went to Ocracoke because of the low clouds hanging around kitty hawk but ended up trying it out anyway. By the time we got there the skies had cleared up for us. Great flight. Got an uber to grab dinner at Jolly Roger and then headed back to Raleigh. It was a fun day!

Nice!

Flying lessons are on my to do list....but I'm not fond of heights...lol.

I definitely recommend it. Sure is a fun experience. Even just to say you did it!

Next time you're out that way, take a quick ride up the road to the KH/Outer Banks Visitor Bureau and check out this:
https://www.monumenttoacenturyofflight.org/ Great, undervalued monument with a ton of cool aerospace related info. The group I'm with, Civil Air Patrol, has a plaque at the base of one of the spires that was dedicated back in 2010.

That is a good looking 140! I learned to fly in a 140 Cherokee Flightliner and spent most of my flight time in a Cherokee 235. Glad you had fun, those are some great photos.

Its a fun little plane. But pushes its limits just fitting the two of us to go any bit of distance. A Cherokee 235 would be cool to fly.

It’s an expensive way to have a meal, but the freedom is amazing. My dad used to fly from Charlotte to Myrtle Beach with friends, take the loaner vehicle from the airport to a seafood buffet, then come back home.

For a lot of people, those two things are completely unrelated.

My dad has been flying since before he was driving. Earned a Wright Brothers award from the FAA a few years ago for 50 years without an accident. And he’s terrified of heights...but only when there’s something going from him to the ground. Ladders, bridges, etc. Zero hesitation in a plane. He’s a flight instructor as his 3rd career. 30 years at BellSouth, ~15 at CMPD, and finally getting paid for something he loves.

It can be that’s for sure! Took my wife and in-laws to martinsville almost 2 years ago for the hundred dollar burger. The flight out and back if split up between the four of us really was about $100 each.

That’s a well deserved award for your dad. I only started flying just over 4 years ago. I’d be dang lucky to get 50 years of flying under my belt.

Years ago, I thought if I jumped out of a plane I could cure my fear of heights....didn't do the job. I had hoped to do a solo jump at some point, but I might be too old and fat now. Still, I surprise myself a lot, so who knows? LOL.

I do want to take some flying lessons one day. Just to see if I can do it.

I used to fly from Chapel Hill to Beaufort, stop the plane at the end of the runway and go to the seafood market that was right there (but, alas, is no more). A 2.5 hr round trip so's we could eat fresh seafood on Saturday night!

That’s awesome. Too bad the seafood market isn’t there anymore.

During the war (II), Beaufort didn't have any sort of airstrip. Civil Air Patrol volunteers built an airstrip (and in the process pissing off several million mosquitoes :p ), which became CAP Coastal Patrol Base 21. A lengthy read, but great history:
https://www.ncwgcap.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=article.display&articleID=684

The modern day field/airport was renamed Michael J Smith field, after the astronaut killed in the Challenger disaster.

Coastal Patrol Base 16 was at Manteo, and I don't know if it's still there, but there used to be a small museum in the back room of the FBO dedicated to CAP, and a Navy Training Squadron. Outside is a very nice granite stone with the names of all the CAP members who served during the war (a smaller version of the stone is at Beaufort), including none other than Mr. Vernon Rudolph, founder of Krispy Kreme - the man responsible for all that is whole and sacred in the universe..... :D

North Carolina's aviation history at large is amazing, and goes well beyond the Wright's founding contributions.
