Disc golf

I used to play a lot 20 years ago. I also played a lot of Ultimate at the time. I used to play Pratt Park in Fredericksburg, VA. It is one of the oldest courses in the country. It is home to the VA States Frisbee Championships. This year would have been the 44th year for the tournament if it had not been cancelled do to COVID. There are several really nice courses in that area.

One of my friends and former business partner from Fredericksburg is Steve Dodge. He owns Maple Hill Disc Golf in Lesiter, MA. It is one of the best courses in the world. When he moved there his dream was to create "The Majors" for Disc Golf. He wanted his tournament to be "The Masters" of Disc Golf. The Vibram Open now known as the Maple Hill Open is pretty much that.

He was the one who started the Vibram Disc Golf Line. He convinced them back in the day to make them using the same plastics that they were using to make rubber soles for shoes and boots. He then went on to found the Disc Golf Pro Tour which he recently sold. Steve is a crazy love him or leave him kind of dude. He was a much better Disc Golfer than I was. Lots of guys as they get older move from Ultimate to Disc Golf because there is less running. LOL

I have played a few locally but I am pretty rusty. Rutherfordton is actually in the process of converting the old 9 hole city golf course into a park which will include a 18 hole Disc Golf course. If it moves forward I will probably be part of the group that helps to design the course with help from the PDGA.

PS its Disc with "C" not a "K". :)

As a matter of fact unless someone went fishing one of my discs is in the pond in that scene. :(

I need to get out with @NKD in the next week or 2 to see if my arm falls off while throwing. If it does I have several bags and a metric shit ton of discs that will be sold/traded at very reasonable terms.

Hell yeah man, lets go.

I pretty much always throw multiple discs just for extra practice. I've just threw some forehands while walking from the tee box to my original drive from 100'+ and have lasered some haha.

What discs are yall throwing? I have 10 so far and just ordered another today. Right now for drivers I'm throwing a destroyer, firebird, and valkarie. Mids are a truth and buzzz. I started putting with an aviar but have recently switched to a p2 and love it. I also have a luna as a throwing putter that I'm still figuring out. Plastic types are a whole other discussion haha.

Honestly, I shouldn't even throw fast drivers. Just not good enough. But I still do, lol. Just not consistently.
I'm just starting to really hit decent backhand drives. Still trying to figure out speed, fade, etc. I started out throwing forehand, but couldn't do back hand. But after some youtube tips, I am now mostly just doin back hand. Will. revisit forehand next and try to get decent with both.

My fav discs are a Buzzz SS and an MVP Nuetron axis. I should probably use these and a putter heh. Also throw a Stinray a lot.

I do use a Sidewinder for forehands, and I am just starting to throw that well off a tee backhand.

For drives MVP Plansma Inertia and Axiom Proton Insanity driver. Not great at these, but they are fairly easy and starting to get them to do what they are supposed to.

I probably have 20 discs. If I like one, I come home and order several more, and in different plastics if possible. They're cheap compared to other sports.
I wish I knew somebody really good to play with frequently. Sometimes i'll find a good single and ask if I can join them, and receive good advice and tips. It really helps to have someone good point out effups and suggest small changes. Just like shooting or anything I guess.

Actually, I pulled discs out and snapped a pic, which made me realize how dirty my floor is, lol. About 20, but I have several more coming in mail! Can't find ammo to waste my money on, so discs it is!:

You are learning. If you can’t generate enough speed/spin on the faster drivers they will just fade out quicker and skip off the fairways. And usually into thick bushes or water. Thus screwing up your next shot. As a general rule for older/mediocre players you can pretty much use putters out to about 200’. Or some mids. You’ll have more success with slower more neutral mids and drivers. That’s probably why you like the Buzzz SS. The only time I throw higher speed discs is if I want the big fade to get around a bend, or if I an throwing a thumber. With your backhand if you can get a more neutral mid, I like a Fuse, you can get them to go dead straight with zero fade, or get them to ‘turn over’ and head right instead of left as they reach maximum speed.

I check with the boss and see if I can meet you somewhere this weekend if you want to play. If Rock Ridge is open that’s not far from either of us. Will let you know.

Yeah that would be fun. I'm down.

I like the Buzz as it seems to "hold" whatever I put on it. So if I throw it nice and flat, it goes nice and straight. A little hyzer, and it holds it well and just travels a nice arch. Just good for a newb.

It's the turning over and fade I am needing to figure out better. Like when I throw certain ones with hyzer, they stand right up flat, then curve a bit, then fade the other way. All dependent on speed. And I'm just not consistent enough to make it work every time.

It's interesting to throw one perfect and see "wow, that did exactly what it was supposed to do". It's very satisfying.

I dont have the arm for the fast speed discs. Like CZ said, they just fade out quickly and skip away. My disc of choice is the Avenger SS. I can put it on a rope, or with a slight tweak in angle put it anywhere I need it. Great disc, I have owned many of them.

@NKD, a friend of his and the Fool got out and played Rock Ridge this morning. It was pretty, some tree bark was damaged , but it was a good time. I’m thinking next time or so there may be a weekend mountain disc golf outing. This time of year the weather up there is much better for playing. And mountain courses are the best IMO. Or at least the most fun. And sometimes frustrating.

Just got back from my ortho appointment. Seems I have a ruptured bicep tendon. Start PT next week. Outlook is not rosy. So if anyone wants to come by and get a great deal on some golf discs and bags let me know. Seems even if things go well disc golf is probably not in my future. Unless I go lefty.

Ouch... Sorry to hear that. Hope it heals up well

Thanks. Just need to get it good enough to pull start the lawn tools and simple things. Guess my days of 300’ thumbers launched at a basket are over.

Who knows? Hit the PT hard... Maybe getcha some of those stem cell or platelet rich plasma treatments...

That sucks, make sure you obey the Physical Terrorist.
I lost my bicep long tendon, look up Popeye bicep) it took a while to get back to feeling normal.

Will be taking the PT seriously as I’d like to avoid any surgery. But the Dr sounded like surgery may be the best option at some point.

I went to a not very good PT for shoulder pain for over a year. I swung on a rope into a river and it popped. Hurt like hell. Apparently it had been shredded for years and was repairable IF the surgeon had gotten to it prior to the snap. According to web searches, the PT should have pointed me to an MRI as soon as the long term symptoms were described.

Bummer man. But you should hold onto to the discs. PT may fix this thing.
Give it a good go and I’ll bet you’ll be back.

Dr said goal of PT is just to get it so it doesn’t hurt all the time and so I can perform basic functions. He doesn’t advise throwing anything. If I ever have the surgery he said I might be able to throw again a year or two later. I’ll see how the PT foes for a while. Not eager to go under the knife. That’s my strong shooting hand!

If you have any doubts about your PT, don’t be afraid to bail and try another one.

For the life of me I don’t understand all the terms and discs. I get fade and stable and speed but the rest is beyond me.

I have one slower speed (like a 7) putter that I can usually throw level with a little fade at the end or I can get it to draw.

Then I have a speed 11 driver that fades but I can chunk it over 300.

Then I have a putter.

That’s all I carry and I can usually shoot under par from the blues. The long drive is why.

Just to crush your ego a tad, good players can throw a putter, speed 3 or so, 3oo. If you want the slow painful approach learn to throw slower discs farther. It takes more technique, but long term you’ll be better. Most players that throw faster discs shorter distances are kind of rolling their wrist to compensate for the fade. It is called off axis torque, or OAT, in the disc golf world. Learn to hyzer flip slower discs.

Try playing for a month with just your putter and a slow mid range disc. Buzz, Roc, Truth, Core, Fuse or Comet. You’ll be surprised how good you can get with slow boring discs. Plus you’ll stay on the fairway more often.

If I play from the reds I just use my putter. And I’m usually under par.

Play the longest, tightest (sure you’ll appreciate) courses you can. Go play Ashe County Park. Asheville. Charlotte has tough courses like Elon Long and Renaissance. Some courses are very simple and easy. Tougher courses reward disc control and some skills. Ask @NKD about the difference in courses he’s played in the Raleigh area. Kentwood is much different than Harris or Rock Ridge.

I get it. Not trying to argue. I just see that I throw it twice as far as most folks. To the point where I have people commenting things like Jesus how do you do that. And they have 40 discs in their bag.

It was more a comment on that than anything else.

When I’ve been looking for new discs there’s just all this stuff I don’t understand. Like “if you want an Ollie to 360 front side flip disc that will roll an extra 20 yards while doing a handstand this is your disc”.

Had a couple stop me the other day and ask can you play with any frisbee? I said sure. But you can buy a driver, midrange and putter for 15 bucks from Walmart or amazon.

IMO you if you give a crap, and there is no practical reason you should other than wanting to see how good you can get you should play with the best players you can. It will humble you, but you’ll learn a lot. Then again if you are playing to hang with your son who gives a crap how good you are. If people think a 3o0’ throw is awesome you are playing with crappy people. I can throw over 3oo with a torn bicep tendon. It hurts, but I can still do it. And @NKD has a buddy that can match my distance easily without the control and he’e barely.played. It’s like pool. Control is better than power. It’s just that power is more fun.

We should have a drinking, barbecue CFF disc golf day, I’ll putt and deliver beer to people. I may even be able to arrange a private mountain disc golf course if we can beat the Winter weather. I know a guy.

That’s actually an awesome idea.

We just play as a family. I’m out there to have fun.

I know you’re kidding but if the inbox blew up it would be proof readers for magazines and girls still practicing the high school flute who wear spanks everyday.

You do realize Grindr is the gay dating Ap.

I’ll check in with my buddy and see if he has a weekend we could do a fun event. He has about 100 acres and plenty of room for camping. But his course is a SOB. Beautiful, but tough,

Next up for the over-40 crowd playing disc golf is torn meniscus. Ask me how I know.

In my day this was called, a frizbee and trash can. Hmmm???? But we didn't pay as much as you all are.
