Recently, one of our members got bit here on the forum and is likely out some real money. Avoiding this requires us all to work together.

When someone applies to join CFF, the moderators are only able to make a few checks. Many are rejected but some get through because there is nothing to raise suspicion. With the increased interest in firearms, thereā€™s been a significant increase in membership. Some want to actively participate, some are just looking to sell or buy and occasionally thereā€™s a scammer or someone wanting to compete with our Vendors without contributing.

Just because someoneā€™s new to CFF doesnā€™t mean theyā€™re a scammer. But, you should be prudent before sending money to one who joined yesterday or to a third party recommended by someone who joined yesterday. Someone who joined the forum years ago, has many posts/likes, is a Supporting Member and has numerous positive trades (all of which you can see from their profile) is probably a safe bet. Someone with none of that should make you wonder. This is one reason we try to ā€œwelcomeā€ new members and suggest they introduce themselves. The scammers have nothing to say. There are also plenty of members whoā€™ve been here awhile but have never posted. They could be good people or scammers waiting to pounce.

In this recent case, a new member immediately began sending numerous PMs after scanning the Wanted thread. The messages were something like, ā€œContact [email protected]. He has that Python youā€™re looking for.ā€ Many of you reported these PMs as potential scams and we banned the new member immediately. Unfortunately, one of us was already well on the path to losing money.

What can you do?

Report anything suspicious. At the bottom of every post, every PM, thereā€™s a Report icon. The entire staff sees each report and every one is discussed. You may not hear back but your report has been reviewed and action taken if necessary (such as banning an obvious scammer). The sooner we know about an issue, the sooner we can/will deal with it.

Be suspicious. Someone who joined yesterday, has zero posts and sends you a PM offering something magical should be suspect. There are no NIB Colt Pythons for $1,000.

Ask a Moderator. We care about the CFF family and will do our best to help. A friend called me a couple months ago about a similar deal, through another forum. I asked him why anyone would sell that gun at the offered price, assuming the condition was truly as shown in the photos he received. Because Iā€™m a bit more computer savvy, I Googled the email address and found reports of scams. I also found the identical photos elsewhere on the net. His call to me saved him from a big loss. He was disappointed but still had his money.

Think a hundred times before sending money, without any recourse, to someone you donā€™t know and canā€™t check up on. You can Google the email, you can check any physical address on Google Earth, etc.

Weā€™re all in this together.

PLEASE, use the Report icon if you feel that something might be a scam. Once a post has been reported it usually gets seen by one of us pretty soon.

We all started out with Zero posts, Zero likes, Zero feedback. Just because someone is new doesn't mean they're a scammer. It just means they are new. Send them a PM and ask questions, maybe ask for a phone number to call and get a better description. You can tell a lot about a person by talking to them.

And, be sure to use our Feedback system, whether you are the buyer or seller. By reading feedback from other members you can better make your decision if the transaction is safe.

But anyone with a feedback rating has all positives. No negatives, and I'm not sure I've even seen a neutral.

Iā€™ll be taking care of that. :D

Sounds like it's time to go trolling for scanners in the wanted thread.....

:D

I got scammed on another forum about a year ago. Person was a member for over 18 months and had almost 200 posts when he put up a gun for sale and a good price but not too good to be true. After looking at pictures etc, I communicated and sent a postal money order. Then the delay of shipping emails started and abruptly stopped. Figured it out, and contacted the moderators. If course there was nothing they could do, but ban the member. Unfortunately the USPS is a pure waste trying to make a claim. I not only used a USPS money order, I sent it registered mail with signature required etc. 1st claim did not even generate a reply. Did get a reply after I filed the 2nd claim with some basic form of bullshit stating that they were 6-8 months behind on handling claim, but someone would be in touch. Over a year now and have heard nothing. Also reported to the Law Enforcement in the city where it was sent and signed for. Of course they were of no help. BTW, this person sold the same gun to 4 members in 2 day. Colleted him a little over $3k.

Is there an address where the person sent the money to? Any members close to the address that might be able to stop by? Just curious.

I made a thread a few months back, out 100 bucks on a MR2 board. Same thing. Id never seen it before and the price wasnt 'too good' but a reasonable price, I thought.
Since then I've made a point to email the heck out of these A-Holes anytime I come across one.

Typically the negative feedback folks don't last long and get banned.

How to ā€œReportā€

Lebron Albert is our latest scammer. Heā€™ll disappear soon but has already begun sending PMs. DONā€™T FALL FOR IT!
He lasted about 10 minutes. Thanks to the member that reported it.

We can say ā€œyesā€ now.
Folks, another scammer was among us this evening. Two of you reported him and he is now history.

Thanks for being vigilant. ;)

As stated in original post - seems like this is mostly for folks with a WTB ad. Yall be careful

One thing I try to do if there is the least bit of thought that it's a scammer is to get them to send me a picture of the item with their hand doing something in the photo, so for instance i'll ask someone to take a picture of the item while throwing a piece sign or flipping me the bird with their off hand. Take a picture of the gun with a spoon touching the hammer etc. If that test is passed, get them to do the same thing with their ID before you send money. I've only had one person who I KNOW wasn't a scammer refuse to do this, I told him I'd give him 10 extra bucks on a $100 dollar item and got the picture back in less than ten minutes. If they can access a forum and private message me, but can't text or message me a picture, it's probably not worth losing money over.

Iā€™d never send a picture of my ID for any amount of money. Obviously, Your experiences differs from mine.

Some years ago we had this problem on the sks boards. The mods made it so only members with a certain number of post could participate in the trading threads. (they never disclose how many post it takes to enter the trading threads). It worked. Of course it will not deter everyone, especially when someone dishonest gets desperate or greedy. But, it did work and we seldom have scams anymore.
