I have been wanting to get in to S&W revolvers for a while. I passed on a model 36 3.5 in barrel about a year ago and have regretted it ever since. So when I came across this for $600 I jumped on it. I hope I didn't over pay. I know that this is not a very early model but can anyone tell me a little more about this. It looks to be unfired or fired very little.

You did well, there are plenty on here that will give you your money back if you decide to sell. Great revolver at a great price, enjoy.

I'll give you $650 so you can try again.

Nice looking S&W

You stole that 26 year old gun. ;)

@Hamilton , you picked a good one to start your revolver collection. Congrats.

Not worth it ... take it back to the store and demand you money back!

... and by the way what store was it?

Thanks for all the feedback. I tried to research the -6 before I bought it but couldn't find much most everything only covered up to a -3. So it's nice to know I didn't mess up.

Excellent buy and a very nice firearm.

Well done!!!

I'm guessing there's not many S&W revolvers in the kind of shape this one is in that are not worth $600.

.

Yes. The Product Code is the equivalent of a SKU (Stock Keeping Unit, Google it). In theory (although there were always exceptions at S&W), 101004 described how the revolver was to be assembled (6ā€, Blue Finish, Target Stocks/Grips, Target Trigger, Target Hammer).

The dash 6 was produced between 1984 and 94. The Spec Ord is the production date. 4280 would be the 280th day of 1994 or Friday, October 7.

You gots a nice gun there. ;)

Ok thanks. I ordered the S&W standard catalog to try and learn more but got more confuzeled. I'm assuming the stocks are not original since there combat stocks instead of target stocks.

Stock code says ā€˜SBā€™ which some say stands for square butt which should relate to the standard Magna stock.

That question is beyond my pay grade. Letā€™s see what @BatteryOaksBilly, @Etruett and the other experts think.
The SB is info that is actually redundant to S&W guys. All Pre 82 27s were square butt. Yours is a much later model that would have come with some sort of Not S&W grips. The aftermarket supplied those for S&W. S&W, so the experts say...made No grips after 1984. All were aftermarket or outside resourced. The post 82s for some time in the N frames series came with Round butt Frames but all sorts of grip configurations. Not certain about what year that actually came in.
Service stocks on anything over a 5 inch gun are uncommon. Shoot your gun and enjoy it. The grips are contemporary to it's frame.

The grips are aftermarket. Those are made by Altamont. Great Grips. They also make some of the factory grips now, but those are not factory, but great grips and really comfortable. I own several sets just like them. You have just entered a very dangerous zone with your purchase. The biggest mistake you made was buying one of the best Revolvers that S&W ever produced, the N frame. Very fun to shoot and owning one is just like trying Crack. You are hooked now and maybe just don't know it. You WILL have to have more. It is just not possible to own just one unless there is something wrong with you. Enjoy your gun and when you get tired of it, I'll be glad to enjoy it some more for you.

Yeah I'm hooked I realized it when I caught myself looking at model 29's. Is there a cure or am I hooked for life?:)

Kind of like "Until DEATH do us part."

You can checkout but you can never leave. ;)

The 27 is a damn fine revolver ,one of the best handguns S&W ever made . Now start looking for a 3 1/2 in and a 5 in. Folks in the know say the ,5 in is about the optimal length.@Battery Oaks Billy may disagree because he does not like anything over 4 inches.

I've had several 5s. Just a little longish for my short body.

To be 100% honest I prefer a shorter barrel I think a 6 inch will be the max unless I get in to handgun hunting for some reason.

That's a nice find! Like many others have said, if you ever want to sell it and try for something else, let me know!

I was a ruger revolver guy myself, for years. Picked up an old police trade in 10-10 for a song a few years ago, and S&W got its hooks in me. That old Smith was smoother and more refined than any of my Rugers. Sold all the Rugers except the GP100, and have been building a collection of Smith's ever since.

(Don't get me wrong, I like a Ruger revolver. They're good shooters, and built like a brick outhouse. They just lack that feel/fit/finish that you find in most S&W's)

Every time I think my collection is complete, I think of one or two more I need. Right now I'm itching for a K-frame 357 with adjustable sights and the 2.5" barrel, and a highway patrolman.

I agree older Smiths seem to feel better than a Ruger. Now I'm wanting a model 547. I have always thought a 9mm revolver would be handy but I dont think I would like using moon clip. I discovered the 547 while researching this model 27 and thought I had found my next revolver then I seen the prices. Maybe one day I will find one that's a shooter.

Like you said, it's your first. You will absolutely love it. And with any luck you will fall in love with many others. It's a big family.
