Hello, I need a little advice. I live in Georgia. I'm 70 years old and in poor health. I would like to gift my gun collection to my son who is 34 years old, married and lives in Durham, NC. I have 14 firearms consisting of pistols, rifles and shotguns. Will I need to go through a FFL? Thanks in advance for your help.

I'll answer first in the spirit of the request: How to stay 100% legal.
If you want to do it now, yes. Federal law requires it since you live in different states.
You can use an FFL in GA or NC for the long guns but he has to receive the hand guns from an FFL in NC after producing a CHP or receiving from his sheriff one PPP for each pistol.

I did this myself when my BIL died. I drove his widow and a bag of guns to the gun shop. She paid the man to ship them to NC. I picked them up at my LGS. 100% legal and 100% Pain in the...

But...
No buts if you want to do it legally and now. It's a family matter tho. Maybe you gave them to him back when he lived in your house and he's just now coming to get them.

AND...
Federal law allows for guns to be received through inheritance. If you put them in your will he should not have to jump through so many hoops. Talk to your estate lawyer about it.

Catfish has the right answer. The other's are the real answer.

NC has no registration and no way to track how your son received the firearms. Durham claims to have one. It's illegal and unenforceable.

Durham’s handgun “registration” was shutdown in 2014??? (supposedly the registration slips, some back as far as 1935, were shredded a few months after that) so while Durham has a ton of other problems that one is pretty much gone.

As to the OP ... to be 100% legal ... the least hassle (only 1 FFL and no shipping) would be you bring the firearms (yourself or you son drive you and the firearms) to NC and go to a NC FFL and have item handle it. As mentioned above long guns just need the FFL to have your son fill out a 4473 but handguns in NC need the PPP/CHP bovine caca (1 PPP @$5 each per handgun or a CHP that can be used for all and as an alternative to NICS check under NC Statutes.) We have a member here from Durham, Carolina Smoke and Guns @TSConver , who is an FFL who might be your best resource since Durham sucks on gun shops to help with doing this 100% legal without driving all over the place and shipping things.

Welcome. Thank you for coming here to ask.Sorry you are in poor health.Hang around here and share some of your experiences with us.Invite your son to join as well.

If your son has his conceal permit just visit him with all of your guns and stop by the FFL mentioned above.

Does your son still has his Georgia driver's license? I know not everyone changes right away.

I just give mine to the kids whenever I please. And dare any SOB to do anything about it. There is no registration in this country so a man can dispose of his property as he damned well pleases.
What dad said.

Can I come by and pick out some items today?
