That did look like a good time.
I thought all these matches were shooting at paper, I don't like shooting at paper (unless I'm zeroing a scope) but all them metal targets ringing and falling might be fun.
And yes to the 2 gun idea especially for a beginner in the sport.
As an aside, what mods are they having to do to the shotgun?
You will find at a quality 3gun event (such as is held at Woody's) paper is only a small part of it. Tons of different steel and whatnot. Texas stars, plate racks, steel poppers that throw clays, etc.
On shotguns:
I think it also has a lot to do with the shell carriers and swag you need for shotgun. With some 8 shell carrier costing 70-80$, and you need to have 36 or more shells on your body for some stages that are shotgun heavy. It adds cost quickly! You need a belt system to accommodate all those carriers too.
But generally, you have to do everything required for quad loading (holding 4 shells in hand and shucking in two at a time) which can entail opening up the loading port A LOT, modifying trigger guard/forearm, welding lifters, etc. Also lightened carriers, trigger jobs, gas port work (or recoil system work), extended mag tubes/springs, etc etc.
The shotgun can easily be the most expensive gun! 2500$ or more. Now you can certainly get by with a cheaper one, but the top guys have top guns.
This seems like a cool idea.
I'd say about 75% of the time when talking to people about 3gun, they say "I would love to do it but I don't want to deal with shotguns". Some just don't like shotguns (crazy I tell ya) but many see one quad load performed and just feel they would have to invest too much time to get it down I think.
It really can be a shotgun loading contest! And shells/slugs are spendy.
I found that I LOVE shooting the shotgun. Its the funnest part to me. When I started shooting 3gun, a generous friend/his wife let me use his/her equipment (
@TSConver & wife Susan- good peeps) so I was able to try and use two different really nicely set up shotguns (Benelli/Remy versa) and some extra shell carriers. This helped a lot, but I soon felt I needed to get my own, and decided I wouldn't shoot anymore matches until I picked up my own. That was well over a year ago! Still trying to save money to get that thing!
I like this idea because it gives people a chance to get out there and see first hand what 3gun is all about, without the whole investment. I encourage everyone to try it, but if you go to an event like Woodys, be prepared to be humbled! Both by the stage design and by the shooters. Your skills will be challenged to say the least!
But, I have found all these people to be top notch, generous, and helpful. Like I have found in all the shooting sports. Nobody cares if you suck! In fact, many are super happy that there is someone they might beat hahaha.
