The old tent had visible holes in the floor and fly. I was tired of the cheap tents so decided to get something nice. Picked up the Cabela's Alaskan Guide 8 person tent. Could have gone 6 person but we store a lot of stuff in the tent when we camp. Looking forward to trying this out in August.

FYI, this thing is larger than most of the specs state. But it should still fit on the tent pad, except for about a foot of the vestibule which I'll guy put off the pad.

Door with vestibule.

Second door. You can see the window across from it.

Yes, those are cup holders.

5 stitched in pockets on 3 of the walls.

And all tucked into the military C bag. I'm a stuffer, not a folder. So these things are awesome. The ground tarp fits in too.

I've had same tent except the 4 person size for about 20 years now. It's an awesome tent. It's held up really well. You'll be quite happy with that purchase.

Where does the air conditioner plug in?

Very nice tent.

Been rustic camping a couple times. It's OK but not my favorite thing to do.

Well, it does not have to fit 8. Just my wife, 2 girls, and the assorted clothes and stuff for 4 of us. I'll be hanging from the trees. Oh, I'm 6'1" tall and can stand up in it with room to spare. I don't have to lay down to change clothes now.

Sweet!

You could rent out bunk space to help pay for the vacation.

You're supposed to be able to fit 8 people in there?

I've heard this before. Where was that?
Oh yeah.."Holds 24 Guns."

Well, as long as everybody likes everybody..like really..you're good to go.
I have a friend that has a big motorhome, when asked how many it sleeps he says "only sleeps 2".

I hope that's for car camping. Nice tent but I wouldn't want to carry it very far.

About 15-20 feet tops. lol. I stopped sleeping in tents about 20 years ago, except for a few trips before the hammock. If I'm carrying it, it's a tarp only, tarp with hammock or megamid. I don't do tents in the backcountry.

I had a 3 man tent in high school, went camping with a bunch of people, ended up me and 4 girls. With proper technics, you can sleep more.

Stacking like fire wood is not in the plans on this trip. However, in high school...........

Well, figured I would bump this with a after trip report on the tent. This was the most rain we have ever gotten on vacation. It rained every day. Some days with some heavy showers and nearly all day Thursday. The tent stayed bone dry from the outside. The mistake we made was keeping it buttoned up too much. Once we realized this we opened up both doors and the window any time it was not raining to let it breath. This pretty much fixed the condensation issue. But at about 90% humidity and lot of rain, you will get some condensation if you don't let it breath when it's clear. Plenty of room in the tent. We used the vestibule to store the totes with our clothes in it and one gear tote. We would have never made it 6 days in the old tent without being soaked. Very happy with this tent. And it fit on the park service tent pad with some room to spare, except that the vestibule extended off it just a bit. But we expected that.

Is it Bear proof? Otherwise I'll stick to a cabin for my camping. I saw the movie Backcountry.:eek:

As long as you keep the food out, they usually ignore it. We had 2 bears in the campground that week. Neither came near us. But we also pick a spot against the creek instead of agains the woods. I was in my hammock all week. But did come out gun in hand for a bear across the road from us in the guys truck bed. That was exciting.

So the inaugural deployment of the Tent Mahal was a success! Glad to hear it.

I would NOT have wanted to camp in 90-degrees, though, tough guy.

Highs in Cataloochee valley were in the 70's most of the week. It's the coolest week we have had in a while. Well shaded campsite too.

That is friggin sweet dude. Glad to hear someone else had great weather (minus rain) in the Cataloochie Valley. We are definitely going back in October.

The 5X5 bull in the valley was trying his best to bugle. Pretty funny. He had lost his velvet and already cleaned his antlers up and sharpened them too. He's and overachiever. I'll get some pics up as some point but the photo bucket stupidity is making me find another option. Lauren and I did an 11 mile day hike that was awesome! Started at the sign where you enter the valley. Hiked out to near Purchase Knob, down the McGee trail, and out Caldwell Fork trail then back to the campsite. We passed a large group at the trailhead about 9:30 and didn't see another soul until 2:30. Wonderful day on the trial. I'll get pics up at some point.

I have the same tent minus the vestibule (lost it somewhere) but mine only sleeps 2 and a small dog. What gives?? It could be the 21" high queen mattress that takes a little room.... I dunno...

@chiefjason have you used this tent any more in the past year? Still working out well for you and the family?

I am looking at getting a Cabela's tent. From your experience so far, they look like they are good tents.

Unfortunately, it's not been back out. But we will spend another 5-6 days in it in August. I'll try to check back with a report. But I couldn't have been happier with it last year.

Nice looking tent. I had a 5 man Katahdin 45 years ago. Great tent with some great memories. That duffle brings back memories too. Took one of those to college 41 years ago as my laundry bag.
