10/22 steel gun - challenge level broke-ass dude

Agreed. I just can't magine why it would need to be any smoother than it is. I've got a $2,000 with less polish on contact points that shoots just fine. Then again what the #*^+ do I know?

I'm just bored ;)

I wish Kidd still did the red finish on the triggers. I got a red mag release and found a nice charging handle in the same.

10/22 dress up for dudes!

I hear ya. It may be the last gun part I buy for a long while so hope it was wise!

I'll get the Kidd upgrade kit when I can afford it. I just would have liked red accents.

After some internet window shopping I now want a PMACA long nose chassis and a minimalist AR stock. The list keeps growing!

The internet is a dangerous place when it comes to 10/22's , 1911's and AR's. Be careful out there.

Check out Brimstone Gunsmithing. You send in your trigger group for them to do the work on it. Then you have the option of what color trigger you want. I sent in a Ruger BX Trigger and it came back at 1 lb 6 oz. The Brimstone is in the middle gun and the other 2 have Kidd trigger kits.IMG_3734.JPG

Where do these matches take place. I have a 10/22 would need a few more mags but it looks like a lot of fun.

DPRC in Mebane. Every 2nd Sat in 6 days. Look for @Cmercaldo's recent posts in competition section of the forum. There are a few other 2gun and Steel Challenge opportunities around as well.

Ok, I finally got to the range and shot it as is. It ran great with a good squirt of CLP and I only had one malfunction in half a bucket (~700) of Golden Turds so I'm calling that reliable enough for now :)

Thanks to @CrashTestDummy and his steel setup I found that the Williams Firesights are bang on, great and quick/bright for my old eyes and staying put. The stock could be better and the trigger could be better and after shooting his eleventy-hundred competition rimfites I figured out what else I want.

Ruger BX trigger. I know it catches a lot of flak but the improvement for the price is right in my ballpark. Also it's drop in. And half the price of the Kidd bits, which is good because my new job is part time and pays peanuts.

Magpul Hunter stock. Not a cheap option but I loooooooved it. Best 10/22 stock I've ever encountered.

The plan continues.

Check out the Hornet offerings. They give you $33 for a functioning factory trigger as a trade in so the prices are pretty darn good. Glad to hear everything is working out well. I still haven't shot mind as our Co. range is closed until Sept. :(

I originally considered a Red Baron from them, but after a little research I wasn't comfortable with the idea of a belt sanded set of factory parts. I was surprised how decent the BX was after all the slanging it got.

So what's all done to the rifle now?

Not much really. It had the Williams Firesights on it when I got it, I just dropped in a new magazine release and polished the bolt a little. It wasn't even cleaned because the girls hate the smell of solvents in this teensy apt.

Mostly I was making sure it would run this trip. I'm sure eventually it will evolve into a money pit, but right now I'm taking is easy on my empty wallet.

Progress.

Ordered a BX trigger, new JWH charging handle because I dislike the stock one and a Kidd bolt buffer tonight. The factory group will go off to Brimstone at some point in the near future for a sprucing and whichever one I end up liking best will go in this rifle, the other will be part of a plinker build I'm debating. Dropped about $90 for everything shipped, so I'm happy.

I also traded the goofy BX25 2 mags for some clear Ruger standard mags so I have that covered if they all check out reliable.

Stock is about all that's left to source for iteration one. I'm stuck deciding between the Magpul X22 which was comfy but expensive or the Blackhawk Axiom which is half the price and almost as comfortable. First world problems.

The Axiom stock that USPS didn't deliver Saturday finally got here and got installed. I am very pleased with how it feels.

I got the new trigger, charging handle and mags broken in and running nicely last Saturday and my first competition is this Saturday!

NICE!
Another 'lil trick- The bolt head through the center of the mag has sharp edges and catches the aluminum upon insertion/extraction. I pulled the bolts out, chucked them lightly in a drill and rounded the edges. The mags drop free so easily I haven't bothered with replacing the mag release. If you're not confident, get help, don't take the mag apart, it may not work right afterwards.
I've the Kidd $100 trigger kit, it's fantastic and nicer than the polished VQ trigger it replaced, my son was thankful for the upgrade :)
Power Custom extractor, VQ auto release (bought before interwebs or I would have modified the original), VQ barrel, VQ stock, Ti firing pin. I need to get glass for it, then I'll post a pic.

Haven't had any problems with mag removal and the game I'm going to be playing there are no reloads on the clock.

The next round of spending will likely come with a new firing pin and extractor but I pushed it pretty hard the last couple of times at the range and even Golden Turds couldn't slow it down, so it wasn't on the must do list.

After that I want to get another one for a plinker build, going for accent colours and a folding stock next time.

That right there is an excellent setup. You made some great decisions with regard to prioritization. Nice job.
