CMP Winchester M1 Service Grades

Good thing for me is I can't shoot a M1D or any sniper model Garand...left handed shooter

Southpaw shooter & Garand owner here...
It is awkward, but a left handed shooter can shoot an M1C/D. I've done it by leaning my head over to the left a bit more and putting a right-cant on the rifle. It's not optimal, but you can get it to work.

Nope, never do :) The process is, send in your form, you get an email (referred to as "DBU" or Don't Bug Us email) that says your order has been received, then status is updated in their online estore. Status generally goes from "received" to "shipped." Typically for a special sale item, the early ones ship fast and the later ones take a little longer. When they are behind, they are behind...but I have ordered ammo and received it the same week...

The real unknowns are: how many are there, and what shape are they in (will they have mostly USGI wood or mostly new CMP wood; will they have lots of WRA parts or pretty much just the receiver, etc).

Lots of folks go on the CMP forum and post when they sent in the order, when it was received, and when their rifle shipped. Knowing their order number and yours, you can estimate fairly well when they will get around to yours. I think the first couple of people already have shipment notifications. Announcement went out on Friday, but I didn't see it until Monday mid-day :( Without knowing how many they have...I have no idea if my order will get there before they sell out. It's due to arrive Wednesday (tomorrow).

I have a CMP question: Do "walkins" at the Anniston Facility have any advantages to those who mail in orders?

^ Yup. I would love a chance to go, just for the experience.

"Just put your head on the other side of the stock" haha I would like to try it

Got a text from FedEx for package in transit for adult signature, thought it was a scam text.

Today wife says 'you bought another gun'!!! Said it was from CMP, had to sign for it..
I mailed my order last week in July. Never got any emails from CMP, I have a C&R license.

Wow, looks great, s/n 1,602,xxx

The forums are saying that the turn out is nice...it's better than it was last year around this time because I went to GA thinking I would get to stop by...NOPE...grr

I'm kicking my self to..when to the gun show in Raleigh looking for Garand..got one for a buddy of mine at $850. Found a 1955 H&R for 1,100 didn't have enough cash with me.

My H&R is my favorite by far. It is nearly correct and like new. It is also surprisingly accurate, as far as Garands go. I was originally disappointed to get an H&R instead of a Springfield. However, after handling it and shooting it, I would not trade it for the world.

Yea, luckly the guy is local and is a collector/trader. I got his info, need to see how this week pans out. I may pick it up. I have two S/A

I am probably gonna hit the South Store in person later this fall. I need an IHC, but don't want to pay the aftermarket premium to get it. A buddy of mine wants to go too, so we may head out there, buy another Garand or two (if they have an IHC or something else interesting), then hit the Marksmanship Park at Talladega.

please let me know if you do go. I'm trying to get the wife to go back to Atlanta lol

There was a IHC at the gun show for 2k...I want it bad because the truck I'm building is a IHC.

One table at the Dixie show had a RM1SPECIALFIELD with a $1,200 price tag on it,
you can buy the same rifle from CMP today in stock for $830 w/ case free shipping,

Yup! I saw that.

I went Saturday (parents) and Sunday (with a friend) I had zero to do last weekend felt nice. With all the Garands I was hoping to score one. I did find a new friend in Knightdale..I understand he needs to make something off of them and he was cheaper than most.

H&R rifle 55' TE2 ME 1 USGI wood (cartouche were weak but there) for 1,100

I bought one of the H&R Service Grade Specials from the CMP four years ago. These are the only pics I have on hand, from when I was redoing the CMP stock. I sanded and fitted it, bought some of the USSR stain off the CMP forum, then followed up with a few coats of PTO. I like to think this is what as-issued would have looked like.

One of my best friends bought a couple of International Scouts to restore about 10-15 years ago. He got them somewhat stripped down and torn apart before life and kids took over and he lost interest. I think they might still be sitting in his shop on their farm. As for me, I learned to drive turning potatoes on an International Farmall Super A.

Oh man! I'm looking for a international cab still. I did find a 1950 mach truck that would be cool to make in to a rat rod. If I found a international cab or if I used the one I have now. I was going to make a compartment in the bed (false floor) to hold a garand/ar. Low rider, air bags, diesel, turbo, Ford 9" ohhh I can't wait..LOL

Seriously think of me when you and your friend(s) head to Alabama. I would be the truck monkey if I had to..haha.

I will definitely keep you in mind!

Interestingly, this is for sale in Fuquay for $1500:

Service Garands came back online at CMP...sent paper work for 2.

I was tempted to try my luck with a FG Winchester, but decided I would hold off. I think I am going to hold off on the SG's too. Right after I got my SG Winchester last week, I stumbled upon (and picked up) an SVT-40, so my gun budget is kinda blown for a while.

I saw that, I'm tempted but after just receiving a Winchester a few weeks ago I'd feel guilty. (Pretty sure I'd get over it though )

If I knew I'd get a HRA I'd do it since I already have a Springfield, IHC and now the Winchester.

.

The Win SG shoots nicely. I do need to disassemble the rear sight and clean it up inside.

I go a head and tear them down clean the metal with brake cleaner (non-chloirnated). Once clean I'll apply some gun oil to the metal since the brake cleaner pulls the oil out. Wipe the excess off. Add grease and oil in their locations and go shoot.

I did the rest of it, but didnt take the rest sight apart. It needs TLC. Still shoots anyway :D

Little known fact .... Lots of M1 barrels came out of the factory new measuring up to 2 so I'm never surprised to hear that a barrel with 2/3 readings shoot great. I'm curious ... were the ME 2 and TE 3 reading what was on the CMP hang tag or did you get them with your own guages? Reason I wonder is that CMP has been known to be nice on their readings ... ex; a 2 on the hang tag might be a 1.5 with stone axe or other guages. Regardless - awesome that it's such a good shooter - gotta love it when a plan comes together :)

I do not have my own gauges, I just take the CMP's word for it. The numbers don't mean much to me anyway, because I don't judge a rifle's accuracy by the hangtags, I judge it by the rifle's actual groups. Over the years, I have found a number of old rifles (especially Mosins) that have had really crappy bores, but ended up shooting very well after cleaning despite the wear/condition. By contrast, I have also had some rifles with mirror sharp bores that just would not group worth a crap no matter what I did. But all that notwithstanding, I have noticed the same trend with CMP apparently overestimating the wear. I just figured they did that on purpose to keep people from bitching when they checked their rifles themselves, because they would find the wear to be less than advertised.

people still bitch..one guy on CMP forums recently said he was going to put a sticky saying "if you can't fill my order cancel it"

I've always got what I asked for..left a nice note and a 40-50 dollar donation. Asked for 1 H&R with USGI if possible and understood it's luck of the draw. I got 2 HR's with USGI stock, couldn't be happier.

It is kinda funny seeing people get butthurt when they get exactly what the description says they are getting. Yes, some people get lucky and get more. Some people get the bare minimum. But if it is somehow less, CMP will always take it back or make it right. It is still a good buy.

But if you expect to order a luck of the draw $730 FG and get an all matching, never refurbed, mint condition WW2 correct Winchester or Springfield gas trap with a documented history of being issued to Audie Murphy or carried by General Patton, you deserve all the disappointment you get.

I took the Winchester out to FLD to play around yesterday and this was my best 8 round group (the 7 up top and the random bullseye - the other 2 just to the right of the bullseye were from an earlier group while I was dialing it in). If you cull the flinch/bullseye, it is just under 3 inches lateral. And 6 of the 8 were in about a 2 inch diameter group, which is a really good sign, I think. Considering I was shooting mixed loose HXP off a rubber block while sitting at a shaky bench, I was rather impressed with how well it grouped. I really need to put on the jacket and glove, sling up and prone out and see if I can tighten it up more. If I can, this one might come with me to Butner next spring.

Ahh for the days of 500 dollar Service Grade rifles and 400 Danish returns.........

I have a Danish Winchester from the Danish program back in 2001, its a mix of US, Italian and Danish parts and shoots like a house on fire, most accurate Garand in the original Caliber I have ever owned

The first M1 I ever bought, a '43 Springfield CMP service grade, was apparently a Danish return. Has a VAR barrel on it. What a pleasure to shoot.

You can't beat the CMP for nice Garands. I bought a CMP Special several years back. It isn't as historical as the war babies, but all the action, guts and hardware is US Springfield Armory. It has a new Centurion barrel and Boyd's walnut stock and it is chambered in 7.62 X 51mm. The caliber is not WWII correct but it is US Navy correct because the US Navy ordered some in 7.62 X 51mm during the late 50's or early 60's. It shoots well and the reason I chose 7.62 X 51mm is ammo compatibility with my two M1A's.
