Ok - new general license and trying to get on the air. I have an Icom 718, MFJ tuner and an end fed dipole with 40 feet of wire high up in my attic.

Tired to get on both 20 and 40 and nothing but noise. I did hear one or two faint contacts on 40 last night but nothing solid. Tuner is getting my SWR to close to 1:1 on both bands.

I know it is hard to tell without seeing how everything is set but any ideas on what may be wrong?

Unless HF conditions are extremely good, I'd not expect much better reception with an end-fed in the attic. I'd not transmit more than QRP on that, either. You're gonna have a lot of common mode RF throughout the house and very poor radiation. A match with the tuner doesn't mean the antenna is good. A dummy load is a match and very, very poor antenna.
