Kayak Fishing

Funny, it's called "fishing" not "catching"... At least that's what I tell myself...

People that don't fish never understand that. I used to have days in the central valley of CA that were brutal. 100+ degree summer days on deep crystal clear lakes. Had to work deep and slow for any bite. I'd come home and my wife would ask how it went. I'd say I caught 3 keepers. She'd say that's it? Damn, woman! You know how much effort it took to catch those 3, 14" bass? Then there are the good days. Two years ago up in the river in NY by my brothers place I caught bass between 2-5 lbs on 29 consecutive casts. They were stacked liked cord wood. My brother only caught 14 in a row. :p Most were solid 3-4 lb fish.

Looks nice. Don't see any fish pics. :D
3 undersized flounder were caught and released. Nothing I could put in the cooler this day.

Was nice just to be out on the water.

Ima be at oak island the 27-30 Of this month I think. Trying to decide if I wanna bring the kayak or not

Bring it! We'll send the wives and kids shopping for a few hours LOL
I think my brothers family is leaving on Saturday. I don't have to be back til Monday afternoon. Thought about looking for somewhere to hang the hammock for a night or two

Yeah that reed is always crowded. From the beach out around the reef is usually loaded with bait and kings this time of year. The guy in the article runs the North Carolina Kayak Fishing Association forum
I've pier fished for Kings a lot. I'd love to catch one in that kayak. That would be a nice adrenaline rush. Nothing runs like Kings. Would have a decent chance In September when they come closer to shore trolling a kayak just a few hundred yards from shore.

I've actually caught more Spanish from artificial spoons. I'm tempted to troll bigger spoons for Kings That's what the commercial fishermen use. These are the ones I use during a Spanish Mackeral run. http://www.clarkspoon.com/

I've caught them on those spoons running them on planers behind the boat and on gotcha plugs sight casting to schools that come up and thrash bait while we were trolling for kings. We caught about 50 Spanish one day after a thunderstorm . They came up and we're on the beach all day after that storm passed. I had Spanish in the freezer for months

Heading to Randleman Lake tomorrow morning if any of you want to show up.
Plan on church tomorrow, but I would like to get with you sometime. I'm all new to this. I need all the help I can get.

Normally that's the case for me as well, but with the wife out of town getting all 5 boys to church ain't gonna happen. But I can drop them at grandmas house at 530am so I can fish.

So an update after a few months of fishing from this kayak incase anyone is ever thinking about getting one of these. I like it a lot. It cuts through current and wind, and tracks well. It’s fast. The only complaint I have with the Old Town Predator PDL is the seat height isn’t adjustable, it’s stuck in a very high position. The position is very comfortable for fishing and pedaling, probably the optimal position, but there are times in rougher water where I’d feel more comfortable setting lower. Something about that high of a center of gravity when the kayak is rocking that doesn’t make one feel as stable, especially so high with no rails. I’ve only launched from the Inlet and went into the ocean, I don’t think I would surf launch it setting that high. Luckily it’s a super stable kayak, and even setting so high you would have to do something you shouldn’t to flip it under normal circumstances.

I rate it an excellent bass fishing / salt flats kayak. Perfect. Control with the instant reverse is great. Even on the river you rarely need to anchor, you can hold position with the pedal drive easily with little effort.

For the Ocean the seat needs to be lower, that’s probably more psychological on my part, but I feel I wouldn’t fall out as easy if a swell hits me from the side. When in swells lower is better. They say the Predator is made for big water like bays, just not sure why they didn’t design it to have adjustable height seating. It is easy to adjust foward and back for leg room. Super comfortable.

Excellent for lakes, creeks, rivers, and some inlets. Seat needs to be lower for ocean swells. I think if you are primarily a bass fisherman, panfish, red fish, or for flounder in those salt creeks, it doesn’t get any better. That’s what this kayak imo is made for. It will get you by in the Ocean, but there are probably better options.
