Little background: I bought a Savage Axis II in 308 about 2 years ago and just put an adjustable Boyd stock on it. The gun came with a cheap Weaver scope. You can buy them just north of $400 plus the stock for $200.

I really like the Savage and was thinking about getting the new 110 in 6.5 CM and a good scope.

Today I took the Axis to the range and hit the 300 and 400 yard steel with just about every shot. Then reached out to 500-yards. When we figured out where to hold the cross hairs we hit the steel 5 out of 6 times. The scope is one that does not have the external adjustments so we just held it to the left and up. The power of the scope is a 3x9.

Question that I have is, I can get the Axis II without a scope for $500 less than the 110. Scope price would be the same and add the Boyd stock is around $200 to the 6.5.

How much better to you think the Savage 110 would shot over the Axis?

I would get the 110 lrp if you want to stay with savage. also look at the rpr in 6.5 I can bang steel at 1000 yards all day long and invest in a good optic never skimp on your optic, base, and rings.

Personally I would get a good scope for the axis and learn proper hold, positioning etc on it. Then after I figured all that out I would buy the nicer/better rifle. But I don't have access to anything over 100yds.....

If you want to swap calibers keep the axis. You can swap the barrel and bolt head fairly easy and keep the action. If it were me I'd swap to a .260, get a good scope, and get into reloading. The .260 is tit for tat the same as a 6.5 creedmoor bur based off the .308/.243 case so you can use brass from those and just resize. It also eliminates the need for a new bolt face.

If you just want to shoot sub 1k keep it in .308 and spend the money on a decent scope and base. Learn to call wind and dope. Master the basics and you will be a WAY better shooter with the cheater calibers.

billyh, I did buy another Axis II. I have a lot of luck with my 308 and the Boyd adjustable stock. Once I get a few rounds down range with the 6.5 I will be replacing the stock with another Boyd.

And for the life of me, I got the idea of a 204 Ruger in mind. I know that I am KnotRight. Since I learned about that caliber and have a little longer range it is gaining interest. Also, saved some money buying the Axis.
