Ok, now that Ive saved this bacon grease, like Ive seen others do and heard others say you should do, what the heck do I do with it?

What do you use the grease for?

I cooked me a couple pieces of bacon and a pancake this morning. Cooked the pancake in bacon grease and it made edges nice and crisp.

We're still enjoying a large pot of baby lima beans that my Lady Brangus polished off with a seasoning of bacon grease. All of our dry peas or bean pots have that added unless we happen to have some country ham grease left that missed becoming red-eye gravy. Heck, I've even poured red eye gravy in my dry bean pots before.

Fried eggs, bologna, spam, burgers, hot dogs, scrambled onions, soups, fish stews, grilled pimento cheese sandwiches, pot of grits, corn bread, etc., etc.

Proper usage of this very important southern delicacy removes any hint or trace of Canadian or Northern influence from the final dish. :D

Aside from the obvious ones two additional items I use it in are: refried bean dip and baked potatoes.

I just paint the outside of the potato with bacon grease and generously apply kosher salt, bake at 365F for 1 hour (you will need a tray or foil under it) for very tasty and crispy skin.

Are the potatoes left on a rack to cook or do you wrap them ?

I never wrap my tubers.

They are left on the middle oven rack to cook or a small wire rack with foil or a drip pan on the lower rack. Smells awesome baking BTW!

I also only buy the restaurant sized Idaho spuds so cooking times for dainty taters may vary. :)

The only tater pic I have for reference:

My grandma and Dad used it for everything. Who needs vegetable oil when you have bacon grease?

Did I mention Dad and I have both had quadruple by-pass surgery? Coincidence? Who knows. Your results may vary.

I just put some bacon grease in my cereal this morning.

Besides eggs and things like everyone has mentioned one time I cooked a small steak in it... was delicious but seemed to smoke alot.

One of the stranger things I've seen is turning it into salad dressing. I know some legit Italian people that do this but I'm not a fan.

You can make muzzleloader lube with it. It will smell like breakfast and freedom every time you touch it off!

I'm gonna have to pick up the next batch o' bacon. My wife has been buying that turkey bacon. It doesn't smell like bacon and there's no grease left over for the stuff I like to cook with it. :(

Go read my Makin' Me Own Bacon thread, then go and do likewise. Reclaim that man-card, brother!

Wright brand thick cut at Sam's. Oh my! And the grease is fantastic.

I'll second all of the above. We use it when we fry squash, carrots, or any other veggie. Put it in green beans. Technically have not used it for eggs but need to, however there is usually some residual left in the cast iron so there is that.

Does it need to be refrigerated?
No, I have a pint glass jar sitting on the back of the stove with mine.
I never saw any of my grandmothers, aunts or mom do anything but have it sit close by the stove.
