The match directors at Conover set their own fees based on awards given, target expenses, stc, with the remainder after expenses going to the club. A lot of the matches pay cash prizes with the leftover going to the club and general fund. Usually a match fee runs between $5 and $15. Our skeet league last year (1st Sunday of the month, open to public, May-November) cost $10 each month for 2 rounds of skeet per event. The funds went towards the $3/round the club charges for clays per person, a well stocked prize table at the end of the league, and a catered dinner on the last day. I`m not sure what our 3-gunners do, but that bunch spends some cash on props and targets!
We don`t have "sanctioned" matches, so we don`t pay associated fees. Our winter pistol league used to be NRA sanctioned, but when the $35/shooter fee we were charging wouldn`t pay the sanction fee we dropped it. We just kept the money for ourselves. Each shooter paid $35 to enter the Winter League, we shot every thursday night(indoor) from late Dec thru the 3rd week in March. At the end we had various awards, a nice prize table, and the club paid for us all to go out to eat somewhere. Definitely worth the $35 in my opinion.
On the bad side, it`s dang expensive and a pain to join. You have to attend 4 meetings, attend a couple of matches to get to know a few members and demonstrate your ability to safely handle a firearm, then empty your bank account. A few years ago the club had to buy 25acres to keep a trailer park from building next to our pistol and skeet ranges. To pay for it, each member was assesed an extra $300/yr in dues, some for as long as 10yrs which was the term of the loan. New members are required to pay a $300 "land assesment fee" for the 1st 5 years. So...1st year is $100 initation fee, $300 LAF, and $165 dues = $565. The next 4 yrs are $465, after that it`s $165 but you can work off $100 of that by doing work around the property, etc., so you could only be paying $65/yr after year 5. You can work off up to $100 each of the first 5 yrs too. Time is exchanged at $10/hr
