Officials on Saturday discovered 120 gallons of liquid methamphetamine stored in a fuel tank in a semi-truck in Harnett County.

According to the Harnett County Sheriff's Office, the driver, 49-year-old Raul Topete Arreola, and another man, 48-year-old Aquileo Perez Pineda, were each charged with three counts of trafficking methamphetamine.

The liquid would be converted to approximately 454 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, said Sheriff Wayne Coats. When converted, the kilograms of crystal methamphetamine would have a street value of $90.8 million.
The methamphetamine was located in the fuel tank of Arreola's 2009 Peterbuilt semi-truck, which officials seized near the 100 block of Will Lucas Road in Linden.

The suspects were placed in the Harnett County Detention Center under a $3 million bond. The investigation is ongoing.

Officials said an immigration detainer has been issued for Pineda, and ICE is looking into the immigration status of Arreola at his time of release.

Looking into immigration status? Does the Harnett Co Sheriff participate in the 287G program? They better look into that. We shouldn't be cooperating with ICE like that. I bet they might even separate those 2 from their families. We can't have that!

No reason to think that it’s the first, or only, such truck. Wonder how it was found.

I wonder that too. I always wonder how hidden drugs like this are found.

I know an ADA in NC who handles a lot of drug interdiction cases. I asked him once how the cops know who to pull over on the interstate. He said that mostly the drug runners they catch are stupid and make it easy for them by following certain patterns in how and what they drive. He also said they get a lot of tips from rival dealers/gangs and paid informants.

But, now every enforcement officer will know yet another "trick of the trade" to be watching for... This is especially important for those large quantity/bulk movements that supply the top level suppliers.

Is that liquid explosive or just extremely toxic?

One of the Cartels is not happy

Those two are in sad shape. I don't suppose their "sponsors" will be at all happy to loose $91 million in product. The only people who loose that kind of money and get away with it are in government.

It didn't cost them 91 million. It's probably like $500 worth of actual chemicals. Meth is cheap af to make, but the street value has to be inflated in order to keep the Whore on Drugs going.

You are correct, but my bet is on efedrine or sudafedrine precursor, which is a little more expensive even from Mexican pharmacies, but even more that that, it is run time at the pharmacy.

In this case, probably a tip. Looks like a residential area. So a truck that's not normally there would be pretty out of place.

But the weigh stations are decked out with all kinds of surveillance anymore. Including a mobile van they move around to scan trucks. Not sure what all the can find, but the list is probably pretty impressive and probably a bit freighting. Rumor has it they can detect large amounts of cash on a truck. Also, if he was bobtailing or pulling an empty without a good reason it might have put him on their radar. Talked to a tow truck driver that had an interesting story about a guy pulling an empty. He was apparently sketchy anyway, in an area he should not have been, and couldn't answer the officers questions. Officer broke out a tape measure and his 53' trailer was only 48' deep. Had a false front wall.

We used to get to take cars and trucks apart sometimes at work, fun, but once the cops left just us disarmed by ordinance/statute. I don't recall a time the suspect wasn't on site, gives you a warm fuzzy.

The ones that actually had dope were always tips. Most lowlifes will turn on anyone to buy a minute of freedom, they rarely see further than their nose.

That's an old trick. When I took the SBIs meth class 10 years ago we learned about it.

The two are toast whether they get gen popped or deported. If they just get deported, the cartels will think they ratted. In Gen pop the cartel will permanently prevent them from ratting.
