Post your 2018 Gardens!

We gave up on maders. Couldn't compete with the squirrels.

Anybody ever lost tomatoes to too much rain? , beans are flowering, and I need to pick a couple banana peppers already.

Haven't lost anything but the basil so far. (mildew) .. some of the tomatoes show lower leaf stress and a couple look stunted. Nothing lost, most have flowers.
Beans are taking their time and are about 10" tall. Peppers are going and showing 2" peppers now. soo far, holding out.

You don't own a pellet/BB gun ???

Probably the one gun he doesn't own. But it seems like a waste to shoot the tomatoes just so the squirrels don't get them.

Ok , found something going wrong!!
What is this, and how do I stop it?

The others in the bed don’t have this.

They feel like they are drying out and getting crispy

My wife planted the maders on our deck. If I missed with the BB gun (very likely), I'd make a mess. This year, the tomatoes are store bought.

Add powdered hydrated lime to the soil. Mine looked like that a week ago until I added some. PH is off. Could be fungal but tweaking the PH should stop that too.

No pics but picked about 5 cups of blueberries last night. Had cherry pie 2 nights last week from my North Star cherry tree.

Beans, zucchini, and cucumbers are looking great. They really like the rain. I'll have a couple zucchini this week. Lot of blooms on the beans and cucumbers.

Picked some more Banana peppers, Jalapeños are getting close, Green peppers are slow as usual.

The tomatoes are a different story. First time in 3 years I have bought plants. We were down to 17 plants today, lost 23 damn plants to something. Either rabbits or groundhogs but I've seen neither in the garden. But we have both around here. That's a lot of work down the drain. I re planted 12 more as back ups and to try and stagger some. Mixed up 4 eggs and a gallon of water to pour on what is left to hopefully keep rabbits off of them. It's shoot on sight now.

How does eggy water keep rabbits away? I guess I could google, but where's the fun in that?

I’ve been told they don’t like the smell. Or maybe the taste. Got a buddy that owns a hardware store that swears by it.

Although I don't really have a rabbit problem, I usually have one per season to venture through my yard. My biggest problem is the two dogs that live here. They don't eat anything, but when they chase birds, cats, each other, etc., they sometimes run through the garden and break the plants.

This year, we set up some of the critter fencing. So far, so good.

Tomatos are loaded. And just starting to turn. Well, the grapes anyway. The betterboys, and Romas are as green as can be.

7 watermelon hiding out in here. And 3 pumpkin plants started.

My new garden shed started. Need some rafter wood and roof sheeting yet.

Well, you can't have too many doors on a shed. lol Nice work. My neighbor built one from pallets.

Getting ready to do another gallon of refrigerator pickles. Up to 28 quarts of pickles, 6 quarts of relish, and about 30 pints of beans. But our beans have really slowed down, not enough to can. Pulled up the zuchinnin and planted more beans. Planted crowder peas and some more beans in the garden. Tomatoes look good, but not turning yet. Banana peppers are producing like crazy and I'm getting green peppers earlier than normal. Jalapeño's are full but most are still too small. Looks like my okra is not going to come up at all.

Tell me what this is.

Looks like squash. If you had good seeds and one rotted in the bed you can get volunteers.

It’s actually zucchini. I was wondering about the leaves, does it look like they’ve been burned from the sun?

That bed has cucumber volunteers that I kept.

Try adding hydrated lime and see if it helps. I use bone meal as a fertilizer too.

What causes the bottom of tomatoes to rot before they ripen?

We're doing pretty good with the other veggies; squash, zooks, okra, cukes, habaneros, bell peppers. But the tomatoes are suffering.

Your Tomatos are suffering from - bottom end rot. A deficiency in calcium.

CONTROL AND PREVENTION
HOW TO CONTROL BLOSSOM-END ROT
  • Remove the affected fruit. There is not much that can be done once the rot sets in. If the affected fruit is pinched off, the plant might blossom again and set normal fruit.
  • Apply a liquid calcium fertilizer after removing the affected fruit.
PREVENT BLOSSOM-END ROT
  • The key is soil preparation. Maintain a soil pH around 6.5. Lime the soil to increase the ratio of calcium ions to other competitive ions in the soil. Add crushed eggshells, gypsum, or bone meal to the transplant hole to fortify calcium intake.
  • Maintain a more uniform moisture supply. Use mulches and/or irrigation to avoid drought stress. If it’s rainy, ensure plants have good drainage and soil dries out (but do not cease to water). Overall, plants need about once inch of moisture per week.
  • Avoid cultivating, or hoeing, near the roots of tomato plants.
  • For fertilizer, use nitrate nitrogen instead of ammoniacal nitrogen (as the latter increases blossom-end rot).
  • Avoid over-fertilizing during early fruiting, when blossom-end rot is more likely to occur.
  • Staking the plants when they’re young can also be helpful. See our video on properly staking tomatoes.

Add Calcium nitrate around the drip line of the plant. About the outside of the leaves or cage. Don’t add much, sprinkle a few granules. Too much can kill the plant. Too little and you get blossom end rot. If your bottom leaves are brown, trim the ones that touch the ground off too.

A couple good garden bugs. A mature wheel bug with Mexican bean beetle larvae in its jaws. And immature wheel bug or assassin bug. Hard to tell.

First ever potato harvest. I only had 6 plants, but they took up a lot of the garden box. Gotta come up with a better method if I want to do it again.

Yukon gold, and the larger ones are actually the same size as the store bought ones we have in the pantry. Each plant produced something, didn't get snubbed at all.

I never plant these but always seem to harvest a couple every year.

Chicken breader, bacon grease, and cast iron.

Finally got enough tomatoes to can a few.
