Thieves scouting for NRA decals in NC car thefts

Being married to someone who has a degree in "Interdisciplinary Studies", with a sister-in-law and mother-in-law who have English degrees, I get a chuckle out of this statement...and wonder if there isn't more than a grain of truth in it:

"Police say they are scouting for gun-related stickers on cars in parking lots, then busting into those cars and taking the guns for themselves."

Again?

My truck's been broke into 47 times, they straight carried my Jeep off before that, and my Subaru I guess now I know why they stole all those CDs and left a couple grand in stereo stuff must've been looking for guns only and thought that was what was in the cases, if only I'd known it was the stickers...

Heh! Reminds me of a story about a buddy in the Navy, back in the 80s. Saw him after quarters one day on the ship, told me his car had been broken into and well over a hundred music cassettes stolen out of it. (He had a few of those cassette carry cases that held a few dozen cassettes each...kinda looked like small suitcases.)

I commented on how he didn't seem particularly broken up about it. He said he wished he could see the guy's face when he opened up the carry cases and found nothing but Christian music!

I only put non descript decals on my truck like the Arfcom BFL and Magpul logo, no words.

No way dude. I have a storm trooper helmet too.

Somebody is gonna bust in for our figurines.
It means you can't shoot. :D

On a side note, I just bought a used Weber gas grill. I had it on a trailer and had to stop by a Wally World. This was about 10PM, the lot had plenty of spaces and I did a pull through, taking up two spaces, away from other vehicles. Wife stayed in the car with the engine on. She says, she watched a pickup circle the lot and then pulled into a space near the trailer. A guy got out, walked up to the trailer and was looking over the grill, which had a cover over it, when he suddenly realized the engine was on. He beat feet back to his truck and took off. Yes, my wife was armed, but she said she was about 2 seconds away from laying on the horn, which she figured would have given the guy a heart attack.
Re-looking at trailer security options now. I already use a cable through a wheel and frame when it's not hooked up for towing.

Yes, there are a whole slew of indicators that would draw a thief a certain way. And, yes, stickers can be one of them.

I sincerely hope that 47 figure is a guess/embellished a bit and not an accurate number.
Complete and total fabrication, the truck has never been broken into, been left overnight all over the country.

Subaru story is true.

Thank goodness...I was about to treat you like a black cat named Thirteen and avoid everything about you lmao

Yeah, I dont have stickers but only because it's not really my style. I generally live low key anyway. Ive visited 37 states and some of the larger cities in them, lived in six, and never been broke into either.

Another time, back when I had money and my office was by South Park in Charlotte, someone broke the rear glass to my SUV and took a set of Ping clubs. The windows were tinted, but, if you got the light right you could make out the shilloute of the clubs. It was a fast smash and grab, because they left a camera in the front seat.

I proudly rock the III circle of stars. ..... ain't skeered

That's why I put a coexist sticker on my Subaru. Who would ever think that a Subaru with liberal stickers would harbor guns?
If gas keeps going up, I just filled up the dually, I might even go one worse ... I might go Prius

This comes up about once a year, it seems.

Thieves going to thieve. No sticker, or lack thereof, will chance their mind, unfortunately.

Because of this gun owner profiling trend I removed NRA decals from my Truck and Jeep.

Replaced them with MARY KAY ones.

I never locked my car over night in Chicago, the cost of the window was high and it had been broken several times.

I do lock it here because I think some folks here can be deterred.

Don't leave a gun in your vehicle problem solved, and this is nothing new and I think the article is more about finding a way to keep 2A supporters from showing their true colors.

Sometimes you have to leave a gun in the car. I'm an outside sales guy, some of my customers don't allow carry. Some of them even have metal detectors. Am I supposed to just leave my gun at home everyday?

Related, I read where thieves were busting into cars at movie theaters, grabbing the portable GPS, and hitting the "take me home" button, knowing the owner was at the movies for a couple of hours. Suggestion was to set "home" to be an intersection near your house. Or your gun-hating neighbor.

Why can't they apply that level of ingenuity to a legitimate job?

Just a more convenient method. Insurance and registration docs often have the same information and reportedly get used the same way.

When I took delivery of my Electra Glide the salesman told me the same thing. It has gps built into the bike. He said never set it to home, just a city or somewhere close by that you would know. I was already planning that, and rarely use the gps feature. I thought it was a good recommendation for him to tell his customers though.

I have home on the GPS set for the nearby elementary school and keep the insurance and registration in my wallet.

I'd love to have a bait beater vehicle.
tear gas grenade, string trip to the door, NRA, Glock, S&W plus any other sticker I could find.
Then wait for the YouTube Gold video :D:p:D

We bought an Explorer with a Viper system.
It randomly sounds the alarm or starts the car in the middle of the night. Ripped the POS out.

I have an NRA vanity plate! Also a few diver and duck hunting stickers. The only gun in my vehicle is on my hip.

I enjoyed Bait Car when it was on cable, NJ and LA best places for bait cars.

Just have few cell antennas on the trunk lid and roof, rifle case in the back seat.

Story about gun stickers on cars. I was working for a guy who had a car sitting in his driveway with a 2A sticker and very small "I reload" sticker in the back glass. Just making conversation, I said " oh you're a shooter?" -pointing at the stickers. He turned around and looked at me and said -Oh God No -is that what they mean? I bought the car about six months ago and had no idea. I hate guns. I said sorry for the misunderstanding and said no more - never assume anything was the lesson I took away from that conversation.

I was in a training class with other coworkers. Some I knew, others I didn't.

This young guy was sitting beside me and in front of him was his Yeti tumbler. I had never seen him before. Glancing at the stickers on the tumbler, I spy the rebel flag, a Spartan helmet, the Gadsden flag, and a few others. After lunch, I ask him if that's his dark grey Tacoma in the lot. He looks at me sort of weird and says yes. Then, he wants to know how I know. I told him the olive drab American flag hitch receiver cover and the stainless Punisher trinket hanging from the rear view mirror was similar to the theme on his Yeti.

He chuckled uncomfartably.
