So, the bucket list lately included my Concealed Carry Instructor. I had some time and wanted to try to get all the requirements completed. To do so, I needed to be an instructor by the NRA. This required me to take a Basic Pistol class, as a student. I felt as the current level of training I had, superseded the NRA Basic Pistol Course. I was correct, but you aren't learning content.....you are observing how another Training Counselor/Instructor teaches the course. Then you must take the NRA BIT (basic instructor training) and finish up with the instructor course of the discipline you want to teach. In this case, it was my NRA Basic Pistol Instructor. To qualify for the Basic Pistol Instructor, you have to get 16-20 shots in a group no wider than 6" at 45 feet. I suggest you practice. And not with a G19. :) I know , I know, the people will be scolding me on how they can shoot that all day long with their Raven .25. Anywhoo.

I found the prerequisite courses on the NRA website at Carolina Self Protection out of Mooresville. The owner is Karen Fisher. She teaches out of her home. She has a wonderful, professional, classroom set up in her basement, complete with LCD projector, laptop, screen, nice tables, and chairs, and room for probably 20. She has a small range in her backyard with excellent backstop, room for 3 shooters at a time. Carport sheds , and picnic tables for doing range activities out of the sun and weather. Small, but very adequate for a nice home range. Pre course communications were done via email, and she was prompt to respond to messages.

The courses spanned over two weekends. 8a til we finished. There are food places nearby, and she has a restroom in the basement as well. She was a very good instructor, well versed in the content, and you left the course feeling as she wanted you to have a solid understanding of the material, above anything else. She was respectful of the experience levels of the different students. Of course, we had our "Tactical Timmy" in our class, as you do in most other courses like this. She handled his war stories, and pontifications well and kept the class moving.

Id recommend taking a course there again. I will probably attend the RSO course she puts on next month. She also puts on an interesting course called RAD kids. Its a child safety/situational awareness/self defense course for kids. It was very interesting to hear her discuss it.

On a personal note, I just have to spend one more day in class for the DOJ Use of Deadly Force With a Handgun class, and I can get my NC Concealed Handgun Instructor.

Anyway, I would suggest, if you cannot find our supporting vendors locally to patronize, this is an excellent option, with an instructor who keeps a class moving, and does good work. I hope this helps to give others options when you are out looing for good options.

My wife and I took Karen's CCW class a few years ago and enjoyed it. My youngest boy took her RAD class as well. Her RSO class looks interesting, i think i will shoot her an email.
Tell her you saw this on the forum. I told her about us here.
