thinking about a 22lr plinker pistol

best quality to value ratio?

I had a S&W 422 many moons ago.

semi-auto and revolver suggestions accepted

Ruger SR 22
S&W Victory

Which ever style floats your boat.

Revlolved I'd hunt for a used S&Wmof some sorts. Kit gun, Model 17? Just depends on rhe budget and what you can find. There is a sweet SS Kit gun for sale in the classifieds. That is a sweet gun if you want something very nice.

what's the price range of a good deal on used versions of these?

I like my M&P full size (12 rounds), actually a Walther in Smith clothing. Seems they're either dropped or impossible to find new these days. Also like my SR-22 (10 rounds).

Best value for my dollar was a Browning Buckmark Camper. It shoots very well. It is easy to upgrade/modify to suit your want and needs. I have changed my sights and trigger on mine and it will shoot better than I can hold it.

I have a Ruger Mark II Target Competition. I have replaced the internals with Volquartsen parts.

Iā€™m getting a Suppressor integrated into a SS Ruger Mark IV. Iā€™ll likely do the same kind of mods into it.

Itā€™s hard to beat a Ruger but I love my Friendā€™s S&W Victory.

S&W makes a revolver that is amazing, too.

Love the Ruger MK. I've a MKII Target Slab Side for over 20 yrs. Like it so much I wanted one suppressed, so a Hunter came home and got threaded. The grip angle fits me better than the 22/45. Adding Volquartzen firing trigger kit is the ticket.
The Smith Victory has great reviews, yet it's ugly to me.

S & W M & P 22c. I've got around 60,000 rounds through mine now. Been back to S & W twice. One for the roll pin walking out and the other time for a new firing pin. Otherwise trouble free and shoots about anything I put through it. The picture is from when I first bought it. I forgot to mention you can pick one up for around $300.00 versus some of the other suggestions here.

We have an M&P 22c and a Victory. The Victory will outshoot the 22c any day for anyone. Longer barrel and more heft make it a tack driver. My son likes his 22c (heā€™s 12) because it is like my other M&Ps but that Victory is a great shooter.

Same here, love mine. It usually goes to a friends CCW class and everyone likes shooting it. I had some of the Ruger MK's, pita to clean so they were sold after the S&W.

Another vote for the Ruger SR22. Feels great in the hand, and just plain fun to shoot. Comes with 2 grip sleeves, which makes it pretty useful if you're going to share. My little wife enjoys it with the small sleeve on it, and chose it to use in her CHP class. The only thing I don't like about it is the bass-ackward safety, but I'm not going to carry it for SD so it's not a huge deal.

All that said, if I'm plinking in the woods, I'm on someone else's land; so I use a revolver to keep from slinging brass all over the place. In my case, that's a Ruger GP100 in .22lr. It's a big ol' heavy beast, but it's rifle-accurate, and the DA trigger is dang good for a rimfire. And being a GP100, the holster options are endless, to the point that I don't have one yet because I can't make up my head. Prolly just get @chiefjason to make me one.

Buckmark camper here with the rubber grips and gold trigger. My buddies all went and got different versions of the buckmark after shooting mine. One guy left a mag on his bumper and he found it the following weekend in the road run over. It was loaded and had some road rash but no damage and it is still in use.

The older rugers are a pain to clean unless you get the new model where they finally listened to shooters.

The buckmarks and ruger mark III/IV are going to have the most aftermarket parts if you ever decide to tweak it some.

I've e have a bunch of different 22 plinkers. In my opinion you can't beat the victory out of the box. Once you do all the upgrades it's a toss up between the 22/45 and the victory, but victory out of the box beats it hands down.
