Rifle I wanted is on Sale for $229.99, only available in stores, web site said none in GSO, one in W-S, one in Burlington.

I stopped at GSO store and asked if they would transfer one from another store. They said they would, but not now because they are doing inventory and won't do transfers until that's done.

I drove to W-S store. They said they didn't have it. I said, the web site says you have it. He looked, computer says it is in stock. They look in the back and find it. The scope is missing. I said, I'll take it. They said they would not sell it without the scope. I asked for a manager. She said the scope has been ordered. I said, I'll buy the rifle now, you send me the scope when it comes in. She refused to sell the rifle until the scope arrives.

I called Burlington and asked the firearms manager if he would transfer the rifle he has to GSO. He said transfers must be initiated by the receiving store. I called GSO and talked to the store manager. He said they would be happy to order one for me. I said, just transfer it from another store now. He said he would not do that until after inventory is completed. I asked when that would be. He said October 4. I said there may not be any available then! He said he would not sell a rifle until it is in the store. I said, "You are the last person I would ever buy from!"

I called Burlington store and they agreed to hold rifle for me, and give me a box of ammo for my trouble. I drove from W-S to Burlington. Bought rifle via electronic 4473 (takes forever). Young man carried my rifle and escorted me to cash register. I paid, and he carried rifle and escorted me out the front door, where he handed me the rifle and said, "Thank you!".

I drove home, bought gas.

While I was in Burlington, I noticed a sign under the rack of AR-15s: "Must be 18 or over to purchase tactical firearms."

Academy is tied up tight with corporate procedures!

That must have been one special rifle to have driven that far and put up with that fiasco.

Sounds about right.

You are crazy. I would have taken the hint that they really didn't want to sell a gun that badly. Ordered online and picked up at my local FFL. For a $229 gun I am not going through that much work.

Now if it was a rare CZ of some sorts I might drive to Asheville, Charlston....

Their firearm process is quite cumbersome even when it goes right.

The online inventory for all things seems to be accurate, but employees willing to find stuff "in the back" are few. I don't understand box stores not selling floor models or scratch/dent stuff. You were way more dedicated than I would've been.

Ok, I can say that I'm trading for a 1943 Mauser K98, original barrel rebored to 35 Remington, with a Lyman peep sight and a Bishop replacement stock.

Otherwise, I would have told 'em to pound tar.

I hate buying from Academy. It took me 2 hours to buy an OU shotgun. I would only buy from them if it's the only place to get something now. I had to take to 3 different people. Then they brought and charged for the wrong gun. Then they couldn't find my gun. Then I think they sent me out with the right gun and the wrong box. SMDH.

The Burlington Academy is literally 500 feet from my office. I've bought one handgun there and a bunch of ammo since they opened earlier this year. It was fun to watch them knock down the old K Mart that used to stand there.

Sounds like my only and last experience with buying a rifle at Cabelas. Much easier to buy online and xfr at my LGS less than 5 miles away.

I bought a xd from the Burlington store a few months ago. Clearance price was excellent, purchase experience was not. The guy doing the paperwork was to busy talking to his buddies to get the paperwork done. I was pissed, to the point if it had taken another minute I would have walked out.

Pretty certain I wont ever buy a gun from Academy, the store in Wilmington has those stupid trigger locks on all the handguns in the cases. Definitely not buying a gun I cant dry fire first. Even if I plan to modify the trigger group I like to know what the break point and reset look like up front.

Eff a big box store. Last gun I bought in Walmart they perp walked us out, and I said never again. Now I have a tabletop and I order what I want, when I want, and have it delivered by the brown fairy. Everyone's happy.

Got a discount code so I can spend more money... but they said that managers have the final say, and must follow policy.

See ya, Academy!
