In case I visit Central NY I decided to read through the idiocy that is the SAFE Act and figure out what is legal to use while there.

I started with a Fightlite SCR lower and ponied up the $40.00 for the not included bolt catch. The lower requires an AR15 bolt which is also not included. I assembled the upper on the cheap:

Ballistic Advantage Gov't profile mid-length 5.56 1:7 Non-threaded barrel (discontinued)
Kak Mil-Spec upper
GunTec low profile set screw gas block
Aim Sports 15" MLok hand guard
5 10 round mags, So I can be SAFE (or maybe others will)
I did follow the advice on a recent thread where @Ikarus1 discussed lapping upper receiver and loc-tite 609. I also used my new SLR dimple jig. Got it all assembled yesterday evening, plan on shooting it this weekend.

It weighs 6.4 lbs and the pivot point is in first third of the magwell:

Did they change the original law? At one point 10 rounds was a non-no. If I remember corrctly 7 was the limit. I'd also suggest you don't want to spend the time and possibly $ explaining to the ambitious young State Trooper why your rifle complies. Not worth the time or risk. If you meet a local sheriff they likely won't enforce the Ssfe Act, but you'll be an out of stater carrying a scary looking rifle. IMO a lever action or shot gun would be a better choice with less risk.

4. Possessing a magazine loaded with more than 7 rounds / New PL section 265.37

New PL section 265.37 had made it a crime to load any magazine with more than 7 rounds of ammunition, regardless of the capacity of the magazine. On December 31st, the United States District Court for the Western District of New York issued a decision as a result of challenges to various provisions of the New York Safe Act. While the federal district court upheld most of its provisions, the Court held that this section, "Unlawful Possession of Certain Ammunition Feeding Devices," was unconstitutional. As a result of the Court’s decision members are instructed not to enforce PL 265.37 at this time.

I am also bringing a KSG with me and several boxes of Aguila mini-shells :)

Where you headed in Upstate?

Magazines on NY designated 'assault weapons' can only be loaded with seven rounds unless at a range competition.

Q: What can I do with a ten round magazine that I buy before April 15, 2013?
A: You can keep it. Starting on April 15, 2013, you are limited to putting in seven rounds, unless you are
at an incorporated firing range or competition recognized by the National Rifle Association or International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association, in which case the limit is ten.

Ha. Lots of woods at least. My Mom grew up in Port Crane. I am from the Syracuse area originally. I only go up for smallmouth fishing, pizza, wings and Dinosaur B'cue. Oh, and Lupo's Speedie marinade.

Leave them home, get a few 5 rounders, it will freak them out if they check you out.

I'm still trying to figure out how the long AR bolt makes the turn to go down that angled stock. Does it use its own special bolt?

I worked at East Fayette/South Townsend street in the middle 90's, good pizza joints when I was there. Went to Dinosaur BBQ a couple times and liked it, but when I tried Carolina bbq that was no looking back ;)

Oh boy, you are new here. And with that b'cue comment will be very popular. I'll bite my tongue so the locals don't come with their pitchforks for me again. :D

Interesting! That makes perfect sense.

And the more that I look at it, I'm kinda digging the look of the AR you built. Its different! May consider building one like that myself some day.

What about optic height?

With a normal AR stock, the comb is in line with the receiver/rail. With the stock you have, the comb is significantly lower. So, you need to either build up the stock using padding of some sort, or find ultra low mount optics, right?

Just looking at yor pic, it seems that even the holosun in the low mount sits high relative to the stock.

Yessir, the low mount Holosun seems pretty good right now, but I need a magnifier for beyond 50 yds...

I was up in NY and stopped by a gun shop near my folks' place. My eyes immediately wandered to the ARs that look like ours - and then I saw the sign: "Law Enforcement Only". The "ARs", if you can even call them that, available to the state's subjects are like the abomination in the OP.

They had some AR pistols too - again, LEO only.

You all probably already know this, but I also learned that the various pistol manufacturers make 10rd mags for their full-size pistols. So they have Glock 19s with 10rd mags.

The guys were good dudes - they immediately recognized my AR bolt-face t-shirt, so we chatted a bit; they hate the marxists that run their state.

The SCR is a nice piece of kit. I still want one even having left NY. As for the mags. 10 round mags are completely legal, however you can only load 7 rounds in them.

I cant find any pictures of my compliant AR, but it used a BOAR grip and the magpul fixed rifle stock.

I forgot to pickup a jug of lupos last time i was in Binghamton. I also miss Brooks BBQ.

The general solution ive seen is to used closed cell foam and gorilla tape to make a riser.

Wow, that lower is $550 to $700 from what I saw after a quick search! Guess it also really costs you to be SAFE!!!

I have looked at these and I want one for some rrason...the cost has kept me away. I just like the look, it reminds me of the saiga imports when they first came in.

Nobody makes a 7 round magazine except for single stack pistols. The law said 7 in a 10. but I believe that is either not enforced or overturned.

I just picked up one of the lowers in a trade.
They definitely don't play nice with standard AR style heights and you end up with a chin weld. Reminds me of trying to run an optic on an AK.
I threw an M4 style upper on it and it just seems awkward and front heavy. Needs something like 88mustang's with a light barrel and free float handguard.

What about caliber changes? I know little to nothing about AR's, but I'm assuming probably only 300 blackout would work with this lower?

I think the reason for 7 rounds is 1911. If they banned 1911s Siracuse would burn and all politicians would have no more contributions.

I do like your tiny AR bolt, and not just because it has a FAL feel to it. How much those go for?

That's about as kool looking as AR toys can be. Like it a lot. So how many $$$$$ you figger is invested? What should it cost to have one assembled? Thx

I was looking at these just the other day. I like the look of the Keltec SU16CA with it's 'normal' stock but those appear to be unavailable pretty much everywhere. I could get one of these lowers and carriers and reuse one of my existing uppers and make a SU16CA knock off of sorts that scratches the itch for something that looks like this.

No, I don't know why I want it, just kinda do.

Where did you pick up the lower? Ordered direct from them and shipped to a local FFL or is there a dealer somewhere around NC?

Ordered direct and shipped to local FFL. I did a lookup on their site first but my FFL is only a couple miles away.
