not sure where to post this, pls move as appropriate

Yesterday I decide to go to Cabelas before going to the gun show to look at an acog that had marked down last week that I wanted to buy. It was gone, went through the gun room and nothing exciting so I head to the gun show. Done at the gun show and getting a bite to eat when I get a text from @Prosecutor, he’s at Cabelas and knowing that I’ve been looking says that they have a S&W m57 no dash in the case at $599. Of course I drop everything and head back over. Before I go on, my sincere thanks to @Prosecutor for both the heads up and for giving me the opportunity to buy it!

So fondling it and ask them to remove the trigger lock, they refuse. We proceed to have a discussion about not being able to function test a used gun before buying it, pointing out that their policy is that all used gun sales are final. They said, yes, something implemented by Bass Pro and nothing they can do. Called for a manager, also nothing he can do. They were gong to have to ship it to @TARHEELSTATE or me so I asked if they’d remove the lock as part of boxing it up and they said it would be shipped locked with a key. They did offer to take it back to an employee only area and make a video of them function testing it for me.

In the end they said that they would take it back if there was an issue, so I bought it. Might send a letter to corporate explaining how stupid this policy is, but really unlikely to bother making the trip to Fort Mill in the future.

Figured I’d let you know so you don’t get the same surprise.

That's one of the quirks when dealing with Big Box Stores.

FYI: For NC residents Cabelas will ship pistols to any Outdoor World for transfer, free.

I had a bad experience at dunhams after the show. I told them I did not like their rules but I get a gift card there every year and that's the only reason I return.

There's really nothing else to add. Witnessed the whole thing play out. It's a ridiculous policy. It probably took a committee to come up with something that stupid.

Big box stores have all sorts of dumb rules that employees are made to follow. I love the perp walk they give you when you buy a gun at Academy. I really don’t blame them since I am sure it all designed to get insurance rates as low as possible.

Why in hell people keep buying from places like this escapes me. If a store/company has a policy/policies that you don't like then why go back?? Bass Pro pissed me off years ago and Cabela's did it right after they opened in Ft. Mill.
I haven't been in either since the "incidents" and won't ever go back or buy online. Once you piss me off, the party's over Skippy. They don't have anything that I can't get somewhere else.....

Last time I was in Cabelas in Garner "gun Library" I saw all the new shiny trigger locks and it seemed like a new thing. I didnt make note of whether that was the case with all the new guns as well. Nothing was priced anywheres near the point where I asked them to remove any of them...those locks are likely to rust in place ;)

This is what happens when lawyers, insurance companies and HR people rule the world.

My daughter’s v-ball club just built a nice new building. They added a mezzanine so you could watch all the courts from above and not have a huge crowd around the courts. It also keeps a-hole parents farther away from the kids and courts. All good. But they have announced nobody can have chairs up there. Because a kid might climb or stand on a chair and go over the railing. Guess they should have thought about that before they built a mezzanine. Dumb asses.

So how was the DA pull? Bubbafied?
You get stuck with a turd?

Won’t know for a couple weeks, it’s being shipped to NC...I didn’t think they’d let me courier it for them.

Maybe a fence so they can’t get over it :)

I was at the Garner Cabelas about a week ago and an employee had several pistols disassembled and was cleaning them on the main table in the gunroom. No locks or anything. Struck me as odd that was going on.

Then the view is obstructed. Better just to let the people that fund your club and paynyour salaries stand on bare concrete for 12 hours at a time.
Pelosi and her leftists cohorts have a virtual fence they say will work but unfortunately they won’t share this invention with us peasants so standing on bare concrete it is.

Not only function checking, but just feeling the trigger is a legitimate and common part of purchasing a firearm since it is a huge part of how that firearm performs and whether you will enjoy shooting it. I assume car dealers would get better insurance rates if they didn't let potential customers test drive the cars, but no where near enough to compensate for the loss in sales. This place should experience the same. Boycott this lunacy before it catches on.

I was behind the counter at Gander Mountain for a few months a couple of years ago and we would take the locks off if you asked. I don't recall any customer buying a gun without feeling the trigger first.

I think in this case it was a $599 Model 57. Helluva deal!

Actually ended up at $570. The guy asked if I was Jewish which was a little startling.

Cabelas rarely has good prices, but I once bought a stainless JM Marlin 1895 from them for 399 and now this model 57, so I’ll send corporate a letter and continue to stop in once a month or so.

This is the point I want to make to Corp, if I can’t function test and feel it, why pay the premium vs online?

Carolina Sporting Arms in Charlotte had a guy looking at an AR. He then produces a loaded magazine, charges the weapon and backs out of the store with the loaded gun. This is in a store where everyone is armed. A big box wouldn't stand a chance. So, consider this as a reason.

When did this happen?

Oh wow. I missed that. Was that after I left?

Yes, he also had to explain why he couldn’t seem to you for me...typical stupid retail employee stuff. Took him another 30 min to actually do the sale at the register, had to do it 3 times because he’d make a mistake and then have to start over.

He had to explain what? Why he couldn't sell it to me for you?

Nobody asked that dumb MFer to do that. In fact, I lit him up and straightened him out on that point during and after my initial phone call with you. Explained that either I was going to buy it or you were going to come in and buy it for yourself. That should not even have been a question or issue. That guy is a moron. Really irritates me that he continued down that path. Bet he wouldn't have done it if I was still standing there.

And I could do the same with a kitchen knife and a child hostage at Walmart. Or a box cutter, or....

A few years back. I think it was before they built their range. I'd have to look it up. I was in the store not long after it happened and they told me about it. There's also the risk of in store suicide, which I think I read about somewhere. Your letter will be a decision between annoyance vs. liability. After all, you still bought the gun. That's how corporate will view it anyway. Still, writing to express your displeasure was still the right thing to do.

But, you wouldn't be doing with a gun they have locked up and if you produce a knife at one of the local gun stores you'll likely get shot down.
Not that I agree with the policies, but just saying why.

BassPro. They bought them, they own them, they make the rules now. While BP may have sold firearms, they are not and never will be hunters/shooters.
BP put those rules in place before they buyout when they had some loser walk into one of their locations, stick a round in a gun and off them selves in the store.

I worked at Cabelas for almost a year between "real jobs" (old guys don't get hired so easily) and got out just mere days before the takeover. The few people I know still there will tell you it's not even close to the same anymore and the changes were not for the better. While Crapbelas was floundering a bit it still had a fighting chance if only the Wall Streeters would have let them alone. And they did need a management shake up but not like the fish mongers have instituted.

Such is the state of big box retail these days. They are not your friends, they don't care, customer service is dead, buy our chinesium and get out.

Haven't stepped foot in a BassabelaPro since. Prefer to remember it as it was, not as it is.

What if cabellas has an 1847 colt walker in pristine unfired condition for $400?

They also are closing all of the Cabelas Bargain Caves, I think- which is a shame as there were actual bargains to be had if you had sharp eyes . Sometimes they were willing to take lower offers.

I have never even been inside a Bass Pro or Cabelas. Hell, I've never even been in the new Academy in Burlington & haven't been inside a Dick's or Dunham's in a few years. If one of the local LGSs doesn't have what I need, I'll order it online.

Bass pro has already ruined Cabelas. I never see anything in there decently priced anymore. I usually leave empty handed, mad at myself for wasting the gas to get there.

Kind of how I feel at gunshows any more. I live about 2 mins from the Fort Mill Cabelas so I'll keep going until they close but you're right the store has changed for the worse.

Same link I posted above or different? Sounds spot on what happened down here.
I'll post again so you don't have to dig.

Walmart is the same way. Picked up a Crickett bolt action single shot for my granddaughter. Got escorted out with them carrying the taped up boxed rifle and me carrying two loaded concealed pistols :D
