Oh Cabelas, this is stupid

What if cabellas has an 1847 colt walker in pristine unfired condition for $400?

YOU would run right down and buy it and beg them for permission to take the lock off when you were outside. I'd never know about it because when I'm through with someone (or a business) I no longer monitor their activities and support them with clicks on their website....

Kind of how I feel at gunshows any more. I live about 2 mins from the Fort Mill Cabelas so I'll keep going until they close but you're right the store has changed for the worse.

And just by walking in the door you're supporting them with your traffic count.... Think about it....

Cabella and Ass Pro have the lock policy in place because someone capped themselves inside the store, and several people asking to see a gun then inserting a mag and walking out the door.
Both stores do a lot with engaging young shooters and young hunters.

And contribute a load of money to pro gun groups. I support my lgs but will buy odds and ends form both boxes, usually on the way to the range on Sunday when my lgs is not open.

If the 2 big stores get out of guns due to BS regulations, it will not be long before the lgs follows. And the bad guys win. There are several great clerks at cabelas here.

I wrote a much longer version of what @john galt said but not as fast as he did. You can read it below

Thinking about it and not completely sure I understand your point. Are you suggesting a boycott?
If so I didn't realize we were anti Cabela's now, Dicks and Cheaper than Dirt et al are DTM but just because you have to work hard to find a good price and don't like the store layout seems like a bad reason to call for a boycott. Did Bass Pro do something anti 2A I'm not aware of (I don't see the gun lock issue or closing the bargain cave as anti 2A)? I don't mind supporting either the gunshow or Cabela's with my traffic or admission dollars. I just know when I go to either I'm likely to leave empty handed but do occasionally see people I know at both so there's a social aspect.
We laugh at the libs when they get all tangled up in intersectionality and say things like they're eating their own. If you don't like the fact they won't let you pull the trigger don't buy guns there but let them know why, if you had a bad experience with a specific employee flag it to management but shaming others for choosing to buy from them is pretty much the same as eating our own. Right now we need to be as inclusive as we possibly can and that means welcoming the fearful and the fudds into the tent to be persuaded. We need make allies and expand our coalition on big picture topics not keep fracturing and balkanizing over slight differences of opinion. We're too far gone to be that idealistically pure. I have a story about a local gun store and the owners lack of ethics that cost a friend of mine a whole lot of money (think 6 or 7 figures in a construction deal) but I don't proclaim it on the net, I just don't buy from them.

@Bailey Boat just curious what you think a high traffic count with a low sales volume would indicate to corporate management? Also how would the closure of Cabelas and Outdoor world benefit gun owners or 2A rights?

What I'm saying is that I don't shop at either store because of a policy or whatever. It pains me to see Cabela's go the way of BP and I knew in advance they would. Everything Johnny Morris has ever touched he has screwed up royally, he's the king of FU's.......

YOU shop wherever you want and add to whatever the stats may be, I could care less.....

"just curious what you think a high traffic count with a low sales volume would indicate to corporate management?"
Really?? Don't know much about retail do you?? I work with apartment leasing teams as a part of my career and when I look at closing percentages and I see where an agent had done 30 shows and only leased 1 apartment I know where I need to concentrate my efforts, finding a new agent.....

One useful function of the big boxes is that it's often the entry point for the gun-curious. My buddy who used to work at Gander told me that about 80% of their gun sales are to persons buying their first gun. A person who has been curious, or worried about the state of the world, is more likely to approach a gun counter located in a store that sells camping and fishing gear than a stand-alone LGS. And some of those will discover they like shooting, and will buy another (and another...), or become generally more gun friendly, more alert to attempts to restrict our rights, and even wind up here on this forum.

I never worked in a gun shop (or big box sporting goods), but I did work at a small bike shop, and I tell people guns are like bikes, which are like Forest Gump's box of chocolates if you get them at a big box: you never know what you're gonna get. I advise to buy both at shops specifically dedicated to selling them.

I find myself in possession of a $500 cabelas gift card. I will go there and spend it, even though it will sting a bit.

I wasn't a program manager but I've sat through many meetings and beatings where DIY and pro retail channel sales were analyzed, I'm no expert but do have some insight from the vendor side not the store side. As simple as it sounds I would expect management to start asking questions like what's wrong with our gun program and try to make adjustments to improve conversions based on their findings. But like you said if their fixes don't work then the agent gets fired or in this case the store closes or at least stops selling guns.

Just a little thread drift but what would you think if all your agents had a 30:1 conversion rate? You might think oh we're fine that's just what it takes, while 29 potential customers walked away from your property thinking "well I'd take it but..."
What if all your agents had a nearly 1:1 conversion ratio but sales were really slow? I guess that depends if you know what your competitors were selling or not. Making good management decisions is nearly impossible without good data. That's why I said let them know why you choose not to buy so management can make better decisions. Maybe they have no idea people aren't keen on buying a gun they can't function test or how many sales that's costing them. I know from long experience that if a sales guy says they can't sell like management thinks they should because of some valid reason it generally gets discounted as bad sales skills and excuses but if a potential customer says the same thing it carries a lot more weight. I have another theory about why telling them anything is a waste of time but I'm saving that for a paper should I ever decide to get my MBA.

Also you might have a look at your "?" key, seems like it might be stuck.:)

Good news is that canelas is now taking my wellsfargo debit card as credit so I can shop there again. I took a year vacation from them while they figured out that people dont want to punch in their atm pin number. I also do not eat poptarts as I'm still boycotting Kelloggs who dropped Brietbart. I'm very passionate.

If it bothers you too much ethically to go spend that gift card at Cabela's, I'll be glad to do it for you. Wouldn't want you to suffer a moral conflict. :D

It's not my concern or place to straighten out their failing business model. That's their problem, not mine. Too many other places for me to spend my money. If they close up and go away I haven't lost a damned thing....

Maybe you should take some more time off, at least until you stop saying PIN Number. :p

It’s ok. You’re probably one of those that gets cash money from an ATM Machine using your PIN Number. :p

I went into Academy Sports for the first time recently. Same deal. Trigger locks on everything, will not remove, no dry fire allowed.

Out of there quickly, never going back.

I used to buy a lot of my clothes from Cabelas. If I found something that I liked, I bought 2 because it would change later, for the worse! Now they have nothing that I like or wear! All this new fangaled nylon junk. I loved their old cotton canvas shirts and pants. They made a coat second to none. Now its all about the younger generation and I can’t stand it! I haven’t shopped them for a while!

Absolutely. That machine belongs to my bank. I also hold different buttons to warm them up so someone can't come behind me with an iphone infrared scanner to get my code. Why not be cautious.
