What is the combination of permits (fewest number including NC) that allows you to carry in the highest number of states?

I do a fair amount of traveling and try to carry everywhere I can legally.

I have a few trips this year to states that don't honor NC CCH permits.Obviously some states will never happen...

From: http://www.usacarry.com/concealed_carry_permit_reciprocity_maps.html
NC Permit(s) Not Honored In:
California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Guam, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, New York City, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, N. Mariana Islands

I can click and figure out, but I'm being lazy...and maybe eventually helping someone else by posting this...even if I am the one that eventually answers my own question?

Not 100% sure about how it affects those with an NC permit, but PSA offers the UT non-resident class and advertises it as adding 14 states to your approved list. It does say "including GA", which would already be covered by your NC permit.

based on the list here: https://bci.utah.gov/concealed-firearm/reciprocity-with-other-states/

...it doesn't look like any of the ones you listed are covered

An NC permit covers 39 states. I'm not sure you can add the other 11 states en masse with only one other state permit. Most of those states, if not all, issue permits only to their residents.

ok ok after a little research, it looks like you can actually only add Minnesota. none of the others give out non resident permits (some places like NJ, say they do but...)

problem em is you have to go to MN to take class/test.

thanks for the replies!

When you look at the states where we don't have reciprocity:

The following states DO NOT honor ANY out of state permits....
California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts,New Jersey, New York, New York City, Oregon, Rhode Island

Minnesota allows out of state permits but I spoke with a sheriff's office there yesterday and they said I had to take a class/test in person in MN.

So NC coverage is just about as good as it can get and substantially expanding coverage is nearly impossible....maybe we can try to lobby MN for reciprocity GRNC

Based on what the sheriff's office told you it appears that Minnesota does not accept any reciprocity. Would you mind asking to see if that is the case? If they do accept out of state reciprocity we can see if it can be added.

from the USA carry website they do honor permits from about 10? states. sorry I'm on my phone so I couldn't copy paste list.

that would be amazing if you guys could look into it

Using the "CCW" app on the phone, the NC permit is good in 39 states. Adding in my non-resident permits for Utah, Nevada and Arizona I get... 40 states. Minnesota doesn't recognize the NC permit but they do accept the NV permit.

Minnesota takes: Alaska, Delaware, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota.

Most of the benefit of having another state's permit goes to people from either states that don't require classes or a live fire qualification, like SD (neither) or RI (live fire qual required, but no class) or from states that don't offer reciprocity (like most in the North East). Since NC requires both, it sounds like the best bet for adding a state is to get a non-res for specific state where you want to carry. Often, having a home state permit makes getting the non-res permit easier (and in some cases possible).
