Did You Go Shooting Today

20190216_141142.jpg Had an interesting day today, took the Ruger 1 (45-70) and the Savage Mark II FV. Both guns just had scopes put on them and wanted zero them in at 100 yards. Normally I would start off with the 22 but today I started with the big boy. Started at 30 yards and a 3 shot group on the paper, then 70 yards another 3 shot group a little to the left and high. The last rounds were at a 100 yards and after the first adjustment managed a 3 shot MOA group.
Next I started at 100 yards with the 22. (was not sure the gun fired after shooting the 45-70) Shots were on paper without any adjustments. Sent maybe 40 rounds down range and all were within a inch up and down but maybe 9 inches from left to right. Wind was blowing so hard I had to stake the target stands to the ground.
When leaving I had some 300 grn 45-70s that I wanted to use up so I stopped at the 500 yard range. Total disaster trying to hit steel at 300 to 500 yards using Kentucky Windage. Out of 20 shots I was able to hit the steel 4 or 5 times out of 20 shots. It was impossible to see where the rounds were hitting without a spotter.

Top left was the last 3 shots.

I have a buddy that served in the British military for many years. His weapon in the service was a L1A1 which is a British version of a FN FAL. He had not shot one in many years. I have another friend that is a senior at NC State who is into Shooting and collecting old military guns, and has a FAL. When I mentioned my Brit friend to him, he said he would bring the FAL back with him from Christmas break, along with an old Enfield. So, we all got together today at Frontline and had a blast.

We shot everything at the 100 yard range, then moved to the 500 and I let them shoot my AR out to 500. The kid wanted to try the FAL and was able to hit the 400 steel a few times with open sights. It was the first time he had ever shot past 100 yards.

That second picture looks like Radar O'Reilly!

Looks like someone needs a airsoft pistol for some indoor practice. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Thanks! That is a great idea.

PS...my rifle smith fell down the stairs yesterday when his bad knee (that is scheduled for replacement ) buckled. He's laid up watching cooking shows too.

I did get to the range today. Shot 50 rounds in the Rossi revolver, and 100 rounds in the p238. Groups are tighter, flinching is minimal (according to instructor), and things are moving along really well. Monday at the range is a good start to the week!

I did! 150 rounds of 9mm in 3 targets. I shoot the 9mm much better than I do the .380....not sure how to feel about that. The Sig is so easy to carry and conceal. But the 9mm is a better shooter for me. Hmmmmm.......
An excellent hour at the range, though, as they always are!

You seem to have found out the smaller they are, they harder they are to shoot and vis versa.

This is exactly right! Lol. Because I shoot a 1911 .45 way better than any of the guns I own....though I'm pretty sure I won't be concealing one of those when I get my own!
The sweet spot for a concealed 1911 is the Lightweight Commander with a 4.25" bbl and aluminum frame. Try one out.

Anything with "light" in the title makes me nervous! Lol. We all know the saga of the Taurus Ultra Lite! Aluminum sounds light, too. I'm finding out that heavy in a gun is really good for me.
But if I can find one, I'll rent it, or borrow one, and give it a go.
If I do decide to carry mine, I might not worry if it's showing a bit. Who's going to notice? People are head down in their phones all the time!

The P238 has an aluminum frame and a stainless steel slide (with the exception of the HD model which is all steel), normal weight is 15.5 oz. A 1911 in .45 ACP with 5" bbl will weight in at 39 ozs. Lightweight Commander is 27 oz with the full size grip but slide and barrel are .75" shorter. You went too light on your Taurus .38.

I did go too light, but I didn't know the gun shop guy thought women can't shoot heavy guns....my fault for not trying one out before buying! Lesson well learned, as I'm only getting ones I've shot, or something just like it.

The wife and I headed to TSA tonight. I had a new pistol to try out, a Witness Stock 2, 9mm. It shot very well, but the reduced recoil loads I had were just a little light and did not cycle the slide a few times. But, it shot very accurately. Nine shots almost in one hole, and one flyer. This was semi-rapid fire. I was real happy to see this when I opened my eyes!

I took a new friend to the range (my 4th time this week), and we shot 4 of my guns. He did really well, and I did well not looking at the sights and just looking at the front of the gun and firing. (Per Billy's shooting instructions!) We shot the revolver, the 9mm, and the two .380s.

Jim's sure is busy on a Saturday! Today there were lots of people on the rifle side! And almost all the pistol side lanes were filled up by the time we left.
I've noticed a lot more women showing up there over the weeks, both by themselves and with a spouse/partner. I see this as a great thing!

Looks like you may need to get hired on at Jim's, you're there all week! Sorry I could not make it last week.

Took out the new 686 and my good ol RI 1911

3rd cylinder, about seven yards

Dirty girl after shooting the .357. Not an unpleasant experience recoil wise, but 50 rounds was plenty:

Then my .45 needed stretching:

Decided to “shoot the center out” just for fun:

More 1911 iwb, failed at 10 yards doing the Wizard. Practiced the 2 shots at 10 with 40 rounds and am at about 70% with hits but over time at 50% of my attempts. I've got to work a lot at getting that initial grip right, it's pretty ugly.

I like your style......Smith Revolvers, CZ's are tough to beat.

Took 3 soldiers out this morning for them to qualify on their M4s. After that was done, taught them how to fire on full auto and how to control bursts and full mag dumps. Instructed them on the Czech vz58 semi/auto and then a magazine thru either my G17 or G19. Seems I only fired two rounds out of my G17 and less then 10 rds out of the vz58.

Why does the shield give you faster target acquisition? o_O
I was excited about my new DPP

The dot on the shield co-witnesses with the factory front site on the pistol, so it's quick to acquire when transitioning from iron sights. The DPP, on the other hand - has it's dot located well above the iron sights, which causes me to have to hunt for it when I bring the pistol up to sight.

Total of 15 today. Visitors, eaters, buyers and shooters. Special thanks to our folks from Chesterfield and Johnny and Nickolas from CFF. they came bearing COOKIES straight from Sandi Lee's kitchen.
6 of us took on the Wizard...…...The Wizard is alive and well!!!! We shot the Cirillo drill and then from the car. All had a great time. Thanks to all who came and shared your greatest gift...your time.

Thank you so much, once again Billy. Nicholas and I had a blast and learned a bunch, as always. It seems as though today was a good confidence and interest builder for my young sidekick, hopefully he will shoot drills with me regularly after his experience today.
The special celebrity guest appearance by Ruan absolutely made my day, so happy to see him up and about.
Fyi, this is what Nicholas got back from his WWII gun guy
"SMLE Enfield. Cock on close instead of cock on open. So all the spring tension on the firing pin is placed on the return throw of the bolt. So if the firing pin is cocked it will spring back to "neutral" tension in the open position if the bolt is turned up."
Bottom line was dry fire it and it won't pop open like that. ymmv.

Got a second P14 British rifle yesterday. Cleaned it up and headed to the range. 5 rds on steel iron maiden target with the battle peep sight from 150 yds.

#2 disassembled alongside #1. These two guns are 6000k apart on SN (416xxx/422xxx) both built by Remington Arms late in production before switching to M1917 production in 30-06.

Went to the club Saturday at 8am till 3pm. It was a range work day followed by rifle/pistol qualifications. Rained like hell all day, I got muddy, wet, cold, and I only got to shoot for 10 minutes. Still better than a good day at work!
