Come on, guys!

We were trying to give you a hint :).

Nah, just kidding, give me a minute....

I am routed at present thru Norway. All my internet traffic is routed nowadays. Yes, I use a vpn. I was going in thru Opera on that login, which has a built in vpn. Routed thru Singapore at the time.

None of the IP addresses you've recently used appear on the banned IP list. Were you trying to route through another country using a VPN? You might have hit an IP address that's been blacklisted due to spam.
He started a thread yesterday about using a VPN service

That's likely the issue. I respect that you want anonymity, but with the number of spam and other attacks we get from overseas our IP blacklisting service will hit a lot of those IPs.

ok, now that I think about it.... it makes sense. Opera is freeware and has a built in VPN, so it makes sense that spammers would use those servers as spam conduits enough to mark them. Sorry, wasn't thinking.

IP black listing .... IP addresses are too ephemeral and mutable for this to work effectively.
Right now, for example, this is what my IP profile looks like:

IP Address 54.36.222.37 [Hide this IP with VPN]
IP Location Roubaix, Hauts-de-France (FR) [Details]
Host Name ip37.ip-54-36-222.eu
Proxy 54.36.222.37, 149.126.78.6
Device Type PC
OS Windows 7
Browser Firefox
User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:60.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/60.0
Screen Size 1264px X 900px

Javascript Enabled

I'm right here, near the Triangle area, using a PC running Linux.

Try Tor. That's what I just posted above from.

We manually approve each member who joins. IP Blacklisting is the difference between waking up and having 1 or 2 legit members in the queue, with the occasional oddball non legit one that slips through, or 28 spambots and 1 or 2 legit members. It saves us quite a bit of time in the manual screening process. It won't be going away.

While I appreciate a and understand your frustration, years of computer security experience has taught me that there are usually better options. I realize IP blocking is seductive.

The first question would be what version of XF are you running? Don't answer, but do check because apparently (per the forums) there was a bug that was fixed in 2.0.10 that caused a lot of the antispam registration features to not be checked and applied.

Using reCAPTCHA, the built in RBL, requiring the email verification, and properly adjusting the antispam registration flags should eliminate most of that.

Attention All Admins!

This sure looks like a volunteer.

He can have the title of "Security Organizer". ;)
Could lead to a future Presidency.

Well then, I'd be happy to explain it to you. You see it's blah blah, blah blah blah, blah blah, blah. :p

Edit, on a more serious note, it looks like the latest XF 2.0 version is .12 which came out in the fall of 2018. There is a 2.1.x version, but it has steep requirements in terms of what version of MySQL and PHP are required, which will likely put it out of all but cutting edge distributions or really up to date Windows installations. By design, XF doesn't display the version number, as this could give away info that can be exploited, but the 2017 copyright gives a clue.

There are going to be A LOT, as in metric crap ton, of updates between the versions.

Oh my, a TANS post with NO WORDS in the first post.
Welp, let me look outside, might be some pigs flying around
Oh, come on, the posts by @tanstaafl72555 are great. They’re like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get. This place wouldn’t be the same without him. I honestly look forward to reading his postings.

Yeah, it is kind of like reading letters from a patient in a mental institution. That is what my wife says, anyway.
