So I keep seeing 10mm options popping up. I miss my S&W 1006. I am going to be out West for a few months next year and want a powerful option for a woods gun. I think a Gen 4 Glock 20 is the best option. Inexpensive, high capacity, reliable, reasonable size and weight, and the best aftermarket support.

Change my mind...

I really like Sigs P220 10mm...but that sumnagun is pricey.
I dont like the grip safety on any XD series.
So those two 10mms are out.
For your intended use, and the reasons you listed, and I can't believe Im saying this, but I think the Glock is the way to go.

Dammit, I just threw up in my mouth a little.

Glock knocks it out of the park with capacity, reliability and price when it comes to 10mm. I have a G20 SF with a Lone Wolf barrel (I handload). I'm far from a Glock fanboy, but they nailed the 10mm.

Steer clear of the EAA Witness Polymer series. I could never get mine to run and sold it for a loss. Customer service was horrible. That lead me to the G20.

Phil, if you want to come to Fayetteville, you are more than welcome to get acquainted with my 29 and my 20. Got steel in the backyard, too. Oh, and my RIA 10mm 1911, too, just for fun!

I never really was a huge Glock fan until my sights turned to 10mm. I’ve gotten some CRAZY velocities out of 5” barrels with 165gr. HP ammo. I’m stacking up the parts to build a 10mm AR sometime this year. I’ve heard that near 2,000 FPS is possible with a 16” barrel. My plan is to build it with a large Glock lower so later on I can build a 45ACP upper to go with it.

Thanks Allen. I will call you next time I'm down that way.

I agree that the Glock is the best choice, but I would go with the Glock 40 MOS. 6in barrel to really get the potential of those full power loads. Toss a DeltaPoint Pro on there and you’d have about the perfect woods gun IMO.

Been there done that...every piece of brass will bounce off the optic on ejection.

I put a barrel in a G21 and it has run like crap through a goose. Just got hold of a NIB Colt Delta Elite in 10mm. Much more compatable to my paw than the G21.

I don't want electronics on a woods gun that I will toss around in the RV and be rough with. I looked at the 40. I'm pretty sure I don't want a short barrel like the 29 but I don't know if I want to go whole hog either. I think the 20 is a happy medium...

Fair enough. While I doubt you will literally be “tossing it around”, as long as you don’t try and go cheap and stick with a solid optic (RMR/DPP), they will take just about anything you can put them through. You’d have to be intentionally abusing your stuff to break one of these optics.

Fair enough, but it also adds a lot of cost to something I will use on a limited basis. Looking at the 40 it's a hundred bucks more plus what for a rmr? Another $400+ for something worth having? So, a 40 with optic is almost double what I can get a 20 for. That's a big consideration for me...

That’s certainly a valid point. They do add quite a bit to the cost. The 20 is a great gun, had one years ago and wish I never sold it.

If I remember correctly you can put a 10mm barrel in a 45 but not a 45 barrel in a 10mm with the Glocks. Not sure if that makes a difference to you, but it's worth noting.

Now I am thinking about a Glock 21 and a conversion barrel...

For those who have done it, how reliable are they? I really don't want to carry a finicky gun in the woods and expect to trust my life with it should a beastie pop up on me...

A friend of mine has a G40 and it is a hoot to shoot, we shot Underwood 135s, 180s & 200 grain rounds through it the last time we took it out and it is a beast with full power 10mm loads.

If you’re going to open carry and don’t mind the extra barrel length I highly recommend the G40, I plan on picking one up after I finish the AR build Im currently working on.

Had one and it crushed the hell out of brass. Probably a recoil spring issue, but traded it off before I could get to diagnosing it.

i own both the g20 and g29. love both models. some personal experience food for though below.

for factory loaded full house 10mm, shop underwood ammo. no one else competes with their offerings. have run many of their rounds in many flavors.
gen3 gives you more options to adjust the recoil spring. get a steel guide rod and heavier spring. nice to have with full house 10mm.
match barrels are a better choice for chamber support but the stock one does ok. brass damage isnt as bad when you bump up spring weight.
velocity loss between the g20 and g29 isnt bad. most of underwoods posted velocity is based around the g20.
like all glocks, similar caliber models share mages. G20 mags work in the G29.

if i was going out West...g20 no doubt.

regarding converting a 21 to 10mm.
for reliability extractor and ejector should be changed. but may work ok with just an ejector change.
10mm mags for reliable feeding.
breach face of a .45 for 10mm is less than ideal.
may get picky with certain loads and spring weights. limiting the world of possibilities that is the 10mm.

This thread needs photos. Here's my "we've all, at one point, spent too much money making a Glock into something besides a Glock" Glock 20
You're welcome to come run a few mags through it

Barrel Conversion = range only for me

I know it “works” but my luck is it wouldn’t work when I need it.

So I think I have circled back and decided on the Gen4 20. Considered the 29 but it's too short in the grip I think. The 40 is just too dang long and expensive to outfit. Maybe if I was planning on hunting with it...

Just can't beat the 20 across the board. I can always get a long aftermarket barrel if I need the additional velocity for something.

Get the Glock 20.
I am no Glock fanboy and the only Glock I own is a 20. You can't beat the reliability of a damn ugly Glock.
If you need the firepower of a 10mm, you will absolutely need it to work. So get the G20.
You can play with 40 S&W in it, and a lone wolf 357 sig barrel for it is also fun.
