Ok guys. 6.5 creedmoor with a 16.5 inch barrel. Round leaving the barrel has a velocity of around 2550fps( hornady 140gr ELD match BC .610). Shooting steel what is the max realistic range? ( and why? Still learning) 600yds? The charts I'm reading only say around a 200fps loss compared to a 24inch barrel at 2700fps. Thanks

Max range somewhere between 2-2.5 miles. Your effective range is only limited by your lack of hitting the rifle ranges. I practice as much as possible using 5.56 out of 10.3" bbls out to 600m (77gr OTM). What limits me is the 3x optic that I carry on it. Don't worry what the book states, just hit the range with your combo and practice, practice and some more practice. Then you'll understand your capabilities and the equipments.

Go to Horandy's website and plug your numbers into their 4dof ballistics program. It's a truly great tool.

And, realistic for what purpose? Punching holes in paper doesn't require any kinetic energy. Ringing steel so you can see it move or hear it requires more....taking out a buffalo requires more...
 
@Tim thanks! I'm just learning long range( past 200yds). Someplaces say you have to have a 24inch barrel to hit plates at 1000yds. Others say 16. ( just a example, dont have access to that far lol)

I have been shooting my Remington 783 with a 16.5 inch barrel and it is surprisingly accurate. With factory ammo and me doing my part the little rifle will do 3/4inchs groups at 100yds. We found a 600yd range that we will be trying to get to.

I have a 20 inch grendel ar that shoots great but I just seem so shoot a bolt better.... lol

If velocity is the only consideration, those numbers keep you supersonic past 1,000 yards. You should be good to go for 600 easily. Velocity can be dealt with with the right knowledge and tools.

The other variables - wind, DA, mirage, technique, inherent accuracy of the rifle, etc - have a far greater impact on accuracy than speed.

I started down this road a while back and have learned a bunch! It's fun (to me) to figure it all out.

For example, the first chart I posted assumed a 60* at sea level with a barometer/pressure of 29.

In the above chart, I changed those numbers to 85* at 3500ft and a barometer change. All of a sudden your 600 yard dope changes by almost 2.5MOA. (18" difference at 600yds!)

YOU DONT NEED TO DROP BIG $$$$ to figure this out! Put Strelok Pro on your phone/tablet and pull weather data from the phone's app. That's close enough for most folks.

Those FPS numbers don’t seem correct. It is still supersonic at 2300 yards.

I screwed with the atmospheric data on the 2nd chart to illustrate the point that muzzle velocity is not the only factor to consider.
