Has anyone disassembled the cylinder on one of these? It’s a 66-8, the newer type with a two piece barrel. I have taken apart the other type found on most Smiths to clean/lube, but this is the first I’ve encountered this particular design. It appears to be the same set up as what’s found on the 500’s and 460 Magnums, but I’ve no experience with either.
 
If you’re talking about removing the ejector rod, I posted asking about tools a few months ago. I got answers like “ChannelLocks with leather padding”. I bought a clamping tool from Brownells and it works great.

I may go that route. I’m curious if the knurled end threads onto the ejector rod or not and if the assembly is right or left hand threaded. I know most Smiths made in recent times were left hand threaded, but I haven’t been able to find much information about this design. I just don’t want to go cranking on the wrong part or in the wrong direction!
 
What is different about the cylinder assembly?

BTW, left hand threads and I use wood blocks in a vice, don’t forget to drop a few cases in the chambers.

It appears to be a solid rod, as opposed to the hollow type that I have seen on all my other Smiths that threads into another smaller diameter rod and the extractor.

Gotcha, sorry but have never seen one.
 
The second photo is a much newer gun with the crane lock and the first one is of an older gun. Take a pic of the newer 66 wit the same angle as the older one. It could be a one piece since it doesn't lock into the shroud pin. I don't own any lock guns or I'd look at one. It still has to lock in the rear just like the older one so it's probably a LH screwed rod but not countersunk at the tip....

As requested, here is a picture showing the front of the rod. It doesn’t appear to be hollow like the other one and doesn’t lock to the front of the rod like the other. The cylinder is locked at the rear and by a detent to the crane. I think I’m just gonna buy the tool @Jeppo posted and carefully try to unscrew the rod with a few fired cases in the chambers.
 
It still has to pass through the ejector and lock into the recoil shield at the rearmost point. The crane detent has replaced the locking at the end of the ejector rod. I'd use a pair of parallel jaw pliers padded very well and assume it's left hand thread....
