Is NASCAR a Decade from Doom?

Never was a huge fan, but always like Jr as a guy. Like, he just seems down to Earth, cool guy.
So I'd follow loosely because of him.
When he left 99% of my interest left.
Then it's this 'stages' crap... NO.
Not a fan of the Chase thing either with how the championship goes either.

The Prince family made more pimping it out over the past decades that they would have otherwise made in 10 lifetimes, and so it goes.

I have driven hundreds of laps around Darlington as fast as I was capable. From 1965 to 1972 never missed a year. Those days are gone. For many reasons the world has moved on from NASCAR. I'll just keep the wonderful memories of my "yute", the rest can have the rest.
I want you to tell me more about this fast driving when I see you in a couple of days! Details!

Last race I ever watched. When that MFer Bruton Smith decided that no more WINSTON CUP races would be held there, it was the nail in the coffin.

I believe there’s alot of other folks that feel the same.

The last time I went by the track on Hwy 421 it was a very sad sight. I've been to N Wilkes many times for qualifying and races. The most amazing racing I saw there was when the Modified Tour used to race there and Martinsville. Much, much faster than the Cup cars.

Only racing I watch is motorcycle racing. Moto GP, World Superbike, BSB, and dirty bikes, Motocross/Supercross. When I was road racing, my first ever win was on a Saturday, and I was on top of the world, you couldn't bring me down. Then I woke up to a down pour on Sunday, well, there went that high, lol. It would be the first of many rain races. I asked a guy pitting next to me, who when I asked if he had much experience in the wet, answered "oh yeah", if he had any advice for a rain newbie like myself, he just smiled real big, and said yeah, don't crash, haha. I went on to beat his azz for the win by half a lap at CMP, in the rain, a few months later. Damn I miss those days.

The short track racing was way more exciting then..... They reconfigured bristol with the progressive banking back in 2007??? and instantly ruined it.

With his brother Ernie building engines in the backyard.
My dad always said he could do something with a Ford engine that no one else could

My greatest NASCAR memory....2000 or 2001, I took my then 5 or 6 year old son to The Winston. We were racing go carts back then and he was really into racing. The four fellas in the seats in front of us felt the need to stand, the whole race. Even standing in his seat, my son couldn't see past them. After several requests from me for them to please sit down, enter Jimbo. Jimbo was seated next to my son. Jimbo was from WV, wearing overalls with no shirt, 6'6", 350 lbs. He reached over and grabbed the second one from his left, the apparent ring leader, and said "He's asked you nicely more than three times to sit down, I'm only gonna ask once". It was a great night. True story.

If that's your opinion of JR you dont know him well. Hes ..... well I cant say what I want in open form

Let's just say he talks to mentally challenged kids like they are his dogs poop.

It was the beginning of the end when they took races away from Rockingham and Darlington...... like many others, I haven't watched a race in yrs. I doubt I ever will again.

Wait and see...

They'll eventually stop running at Bristol and Martinsville.

F' em.

Stock car is cool, when its stock cars. I like racing in general but not todays NASCAR. F1, IndyCar, NHRA, IHRA, Group A, Group C are awesome. For me to like nascar again they would have to buy them from the dealership. To say four wheel racing is not a sport including NASCAR means you aint done it. 500 laps at 170 to 200 mph is hard.

I drive past the place from time to time and its sad for sure. Junior Johnson would be one of them people.

It hasn't been nascar in about 20 years. Never really cared for it much none anyways.

It was fun when you could park yer truck on the hill overlooking turns 1 & 2 & kick back in a lawn chair & drink a beer & watch some balls-out racing, but I think them days are long gone.

There any small dirt tracks that run regularly around these parts? That, to me, is fun. I'd pay money to watch that. Hell, I'll even pony up for food & beer while I'm there & I love me some food & beer. I'd rather support mom & pop operations than some anonymous corporate entity.

You wanna see some athletes? Check out Max Biaggi & Nicky Hayden rippin' it up on motards. Watch Nicky setting up for the turn at ~ 2:20. That shit is nuts.

Nicky was always fun to watch. Got to hang out with his bro Roger Lee for awhile when he made his debut as a AMA Pro at Road Atlanta back in the late 90's. Always had a lot of respect for the Hayden's, and all three brother's could tear it up. RIP Champ.

NASCAR died when Winston Cup went away. Then came all the big money, cookie cutter tracks across the country.
In the good old days anyone could put a car together and qualify to race. When was the last time you saw a car on the track with no sponsor???
For the past 10-15yrs, probably more, it is the same people, driving for the same sponsors. Restrictor plates, slowing the cars down to make it safer. Drivers with the mentality of "it's gonna be a good points day", racing for points instead of the win.
If they want to keep this stupid points chase thing they have now, make it interesting, make winning worth 100 points or even 500 points instead of 5, and in order to be in the final chase for the championship, you had to have won a race, and let every race winner in the chase.
I haven't watched a race in at least 10yrs.

Get rid of The Car of Piss.
Bring back shop built cars.
Put Hemi 426s and High Riser 427s back in the cars.
Let the drivers decide just how big their balls are and how deep into the corner they want to dive.

Of course they would need to find real men to drive the cars I want to see.

Money did ruin the sport...... I always thout it would be cool to have some basic rules.....you run a FACTORY body, this gas, this tire and this block....naturally aspirated. Dont care what you do to the block, just so you dont add any material to increase displacement in the block. Other than that......some basic safety rules.

This. Loved watchin' the Outlaw Sprints when there wasn't a fuel check. All those beautiful blue & purple flames, coming outta turns 2 or 4 & hittin' the straightaway.

High dollar NASCAR series stuff died when the powers that be to the character out of it by killing off the characters that made NASCAR Winston Cup and even Busch series appealing. The real and true “stock car racing” was in the Grand National days when it was real cars with backyard wrenching, along with a few characters like Smokey Yunick, Wood Brothers, Harry Hyde, Junior Johnson, etc running in the SE tracks. The early Winston Cup years were the start of an unofficial male soap opera when RJ Reynolds saw the marketing potential and signed on. Advertisements and sponsors started to get the idea of name recognition between the car and drive and their products was more than just selling cars on Monday. The more “character” a driver had the more fans he’d pull to their product.

People will state the most important date/event in NASCAR ... I call February 18, 1979 ... the first time a NASCAR race was nationally televised ... CBS got the Sunday running of the Daytona 500 ... and “The Crash and Fight in Turn 3”. That to me was the start of the real soap opera. The characters kinda wrote themselves from Yarborough to the Alabama Gang to The King with new comers like Earnhardt banging his way in. Bill Jr was the head of it but Bill Sr still came in to the office ... and things more to appeal to more than the SE Good Ole Boys ... and drivers and crew chiefs were not neutered for going deep into the gray areas ... “Brain” France’s accession to power did however stat the decline ... points structure/“Chase”, COT/POS, actions detrimental to NASCAR penalties for drivers saying what they thought, DROPPING RTAIN TRACKS where NASCAR started and give Commiefornia/Kansas, etc all those dates and so on ... and sure as hell don’t fight. All that crappé made my decision to tune out real easy 15+ years back ... and I know even more BS has happened since so Whatever Cup racing doesn’t even get thought about by me anymore.

Give 'em a 2" tall rear spoiler for EVERY track and let them set it to whatever angle they want, you'd find out who has a pair.

( also, stand the windshield back up to an angle that looks like it belongs on a street car )

They alienated their fanbase starting about 2005ish. They were trying to get people with more money to become fans and in the process ran off the fans that started Nascar.
Putting the Nascar hall of fame in downtown Charlotte was Very Very stupid. It should have gone to Daytona or Concord( near the speedway).
Young Snooty drivers ,need I say more. Turning their nose up at the fanbase.

I gave it up in 2007 and never looked back. Drag Racing has always been my favorite anyway.

The NASCAR HOF should have been put wherever NASCAR was willing to build it with their own money! Just like pro sports stadiums, the HOF should have never been funded with tax dollars.

So very true indeed! Funding millionaires on the backs of the taxpayers. Charlotte gets a gold medal for stupid over and over.
