I had them eating my house up one year.
I asked a friend who was an exterminator (the bug type) and he said they were probably after bugs which in this case was borer bees in the cedar siding.
He said the pecker woods were afraid of snakes and he advised me to buy some rubber snakes and tack them to the side of the house close to where they were pecking.
I did and the Peckers left.
But the side of my house looked like some young boys club house for a while with holes in the siding and rubber snakes nailed all over the side of the house.
But the peckers leave my house alone now.

I'm sure I'll get harassed by someone or called a greentard / pinko commie...

...but NC takes certain wildlife laws pretty seriously (sea turtles) and other related things (like sand dunes).

So it's worth noting that shooting a woodpecker, assuming you get caught, is up to a $100k fine and/or 1 year in prison.

@Millie
What he said.

Sometimes they peck on houses as part of their mating ritual. Seems the females like the loudest male. They used to peck my gutters for that reason.

They probably are after bugs, but if it stops in a few weeks, it may have been a mating thing.
The one that makes the loudest noise does that mean they have the hardest and biggest pecker

If they come back I'll have to try the snakes. But oddly enough, they never did, and I hope they won't. They must have read the posts about pellet guns and stuff, I guess.
