Im thinking about buying a few bottles of burbon to stock my home office. I figure I rarely drink so I could get a copy of nice bottles.

@BurnedOutGeek ^

Oh, dear God, stay away!

It's worse than watches, harder to find, and more addictive... not necessarily to drink, but to obtain.

This is your fault. The idea has been sitting with me since you text me 3-4 months ago. I'm about to redo my home office setup so seems like a great time to start.

I was a happy Scotch drinker until a few months ago. I could get my go to, very good Scotches easily at my local ABC whenever I wanted.

Now I'm chasing bottles of bourbon that you can't get in NC and joining Facebook groups dedicated to such.....

Turn back now.

I blame @BurnedOutGeek and @thrillhill lol

There is a lot of blame to go around.

@mj1angier , @Studentofthegun , @BurnedOutGeek, @rantingredneck , @Crazy Carl , and so on.

I am kind of disappointed that I waited to start "collecting" until the "shortages" had already started.

But, the chase is half the fun.

Do it.

Go heavy on the rye based whiskeys.

Wheated bourbon's suck. I would stay away from those!

Whats some you all are chasing and how much does it cost?

Whats some you all are chasing and how much does it cost?
Where to start with that question??? Lmao

I'll give you a couple to find, yes I'm an ahole.

Old Rip Van Winkle 25-Year-Old
Michter’s 25-Year-Old

Then there's:
Pappy van winkle 23
Eagle double rare
EH Taylor four grain

Then the more reasonable:
Old forester birthday bourbon
Weller 12
Rhetoric 23
William larue Weller

Then if you want something for daily sips:
Issac bowman port finished
Weller special reserve
Wild Turkey Kentucky spirit
IW Harper 15 year
Eagle rare
Angel's envy
Many many more here

What to chase?

Depends on whether you are EVER gonna drink any of what you procure, or only open on special occasions or flip.

How much it costs depends on whether or not you intend to only buy in gov controlled state/s, or on the secondary individual market, or in private store sale states, or a combination of all. Also depends on how patient and how personable you are prepared to be.

The thread below is a good one to "feel the pulse":

https://carolinafirearmsforum.com/index.php?threads/your-latest-alcohol-purchase.35195/

The two biggest thorns in my side right now:

Weller 12
Sub-$40 in Texas or Ohio
$42.95 in NC (but you can not find it except 4 times per year, 6 bottles per store if they are lucky, and you have to be lucky or on a list or bribe someone)
$200 plus on the secondary individual market

George T. Stagg
$100 in gov control stores (same story, can't find it)
$400 plus in all secondary markets, individuals and stores. (Not unusual to see it $800-2,000 in bad stores, Myrtle Beach, Long Island, etc)

Many other bottles we chase are not available in US, except in duty free or on cruise ships because they are not released in our market, but foreign markets only. Bourbon. That is made in Kentucky. I had to order my first bottle of Colonel E.H. Taylor from London. England. To get my bourbon. LOL

I'm building shelves this weekend.

And that secondary individual market- that's a whole nother ball of snakes.

Screen shoot of one sale:

Not only do you have to learn the lingo, but you all so have build up a rep because there is not a 3 party involved. So either someone send you bottle first or you send money first and just go on trust. You can do face to face but that narrows down the maket

Build something with doors or ledges.

Someone that will remain nameless tempt fate with some fine juice. I mean, its not like they every have anyone staggering around in their shop...
Or have the occasional friendly game of "toss the bowling ball to whoever is on the couch not paying attention".

But then there is a whole different sub-category that a lot of us "chase".

That category is the sub $30 hidden gem "good drinkers". Frequently under $20.

Oftentimes these hidden gems are made by distilleries that make the more popular bottles and are frequently the same mashbill with less time in barrel and lower in the warehouse.

Mellow Corn
JTS Brown
Heaven Hill 6 year BIB
Certain Ezra Brooks
Old Gradad Bib

And a plethora of others. Makes it fun if you are a drinker.

Yeah add J.W. Dant to that list

It was suggested by an unnamed party that I meet @mj1angier at the angier store and to pick up 1 or 3 of Barrell bourbon 15 for said party

Alright I didn't listen to @rantingredneck. I stopped by the local store and sent pics to @BurnedOutGeek. He recommended seeing Ms. Shirley :) so now I gotta bribe @mj1angier.

But you gotta owe or trade mj1angier a favor because even Miss Shirley is only gonna let each customer get 1 bottle of each and he may want it for himself.

That's why this get's complicated and time consuming.

I wanted to collect wine bottles at one time. Always thought it would be cool to have some really neat label work. I'm not a drinker though and the wife said not in her house.

Yeah, me and Miss Shirley got a thang going on, lol

But she really take care of the bourbon folks. After you been in a few times, you can email her to hold a bottle for pick-up. After @thrillhill went in a few times, she know that if something new comes in, I am going to want 2. 1 for me and 1 for Bill. But sometimes there is not a limit, so I get a few to share around. She surprised me with a Weller out of her office. I almost hugged her, lol

You DON'T drink?

Color me shocked.

I've only seen you mention that like 8 times now in alcohol related threads. o_O

Don’t do it!!! Ms. Shirley already has too many boyfriends! The competition is stiff. (HaHa)
Thrill and BOG are correct. Look at what’s posted in the drinking threads. That’s what we are proud
Of finding. Those boys are tough to keep up with......

I like that this thread exists and that I didn’t get all of the blame I should have gotten. Muhahahahha!

Anyway, wheated bourbons are where it’s at. And if you can get some sort of age statement that’s 5 years or more you’re doing well under $30.

1792 Small Batch is another great bourbon under $30.

That brings up another facet of what @amnesia needs to look out for, good "cheap" bourbons that become sought after due to a budding reputation and supply demand issues.

I really want to try the 1792 Wheated edition that came out recently. But have been unable to find any.

So 1792 as a distillery has been building their rep in the past few years as an affordable but delicious alternative to the unicorns or otherwise hard to get brands. Which of course is starting to put some availability pressure on their "special releases".

And then there was this:

120,000 gallons on the ground.

Speaking of blame, I must admit that even though I don't think @Midliferally and I have ever met in person, I have benefited greatly from his scotch (mostly peaty in my case) knowledge.

Agreed. I know which ones to stay away from based on whether the two of utes are talking about it. Lol

Devils drink right there.

Having said that, this was in the back of Angier ABC:

But I have no knowledge of devils drink

Oh yeah, and get you some old forester mint julip. Finding it here usually takes asking for it, but it's around 23 bucks, and delicious.
